Changing start time after being offered the job

I have just been offered a term time only job, my directed time is 8:30- 3.30. However contract states working hours are from 8-5. Any hours would be agreed with line manager.

Everything is being processed as we speak, references, dbs, I.d cards I've been sent the contract but delaying signing it. DDs school have said there are no breakfast club spaces left. So I'd have to get dd to school for 8:30. The new job is 15 mins away, so ill get there at around 8:40. My Believe me when I say this, I've explored EVERY option, none of them will work for us.

Shall i just ask to start later or am I asking for too much before I've even officially got the job?

Well why not try for 8.45? What have you got to lose. Could you work the extra 15 mins after 3.30 though or would you be late for the pickup?

What's 'directed time'?

Yellowlegobrick · 21/07/2023 22:25

Is it a TA or similar non teaching role in a school?

FriedBrainFood · 21/07/2023 23:17

@Yellowlegobrick yes

So you would never have been able to make the start time of 0830 anyway? Can you ask for a later start on a temporary basis until a place at breakfast club comes up? Working in a school you tend to need to be there before the students.

You’ll just have to ask them and see.
You need to work out if you’re asking for your day to be pushed later or if you’re asking for a reduced working day. If drop off is 8:30 it’s a stretch to even say you will get there at 8:40, you would be late every day.
Realistically you need a 9 start time, however on the contracted hours that would go until 4.

This happened to me a few years ago. Job was advertised as 9 -3 then re-confirmed during the interview as being 9 - 3. I got the job & the contract stated 10 - 3. So I told them to shove it on the basis that if they were going to dick me about like that before I even started then it didn't bode well.

Have you asked them if it’s an error? Where did you get the idea was 8.30-3.30 in the first place?
