Suspected melanoma

I’ve had two suspicious moles removed and been told not to get the wounds wet /shower properly for five days although can cling film and wash carefully.

I’m so fed up with not having a proper shower. Surgery was Sunday- can I shower properly today without worrying about the wounds if anyone knows?

Where were they? I'm a bit of an expert in melanoma (stage 4 patient here) do you have external stitches?

Toblerone45 · 21/07/2023 17:10

One on foot and one on tummy; both have eight internal and eight external stitches, thank you x

I had one removed last week, although just had butterfly stitches and a dressing, they said not to get wet for 48 hours with me though

Toblerone45 · 21/07/2023 17:18

Mine had like real stitches and quite big excisions

About an inch and a half each

You can shower properly today x

The 1 on your belly should be OK for a quick shower just try and keep it as dry as possible the 1 on the foot is more tricky as its in the water, when I had 1 removed from in-between my toes it took much longer to heal than the others (kept opening up when I put weight on my foot) and the nurse suggested a plastic bag taped over my foot, it was a bit of a faff but worth it imo

NoSunNoSun · 21/07/2023 17:53

I always do the plastic bag trick and have as quick as shower as possible. Put your back to the water so your tummy gets less wet. Another thing I’ve done is put a plastic chair in the shower, sat in it and left the leg out of the water. I am normally allowed to shower after three or four days.
I bought some plastic boot things on Amazon but they didn’t work well.
I have had nine melanomas so experienced in this.
Also you could stand in a shallow bath on one leg and splash water on yourself.

So sorry to read this, I’m thinking of you.

Sorry not to have replied earlier and also so sorry to the previous posters who have suffered melanomas/are doing so; I really hope your treatment will be effective.

I did shower but now I’m a bit concerned. The tummy one has started itching and the foot one still really hurts. I do have spare dressings and I’m wondering if I should change them but I’m the world’s most squeamish person.

I’m scared what I might find and I’m pathetic and rubbish at any kinds of wounds 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Ah thank you. I'm on a trial and have gone from unresectable to no evidence of disease in 3 months so I'm feeling very lucky!

@Toblerone45 itchiness is a sign it's healing xx

Toblerone45 · 23/07/2023 13:20

Thank you @CoachBeardsJane - I’m very pleased to hear your news and I really hope things keep going well for you xx

KeepYaHeadUp · 23/07/2023 13:30

Had 2 melanoma excisions on upper arm so I feel your pain - tho mine were easy enough to keep out of running water.

One thing I will say is I HATED not feeling clean and having to think about the healing all the time but it got much better really quickly. Hope you're on the mend soon

PinkCosYouAreSoVery · 29/08/2023 16:25

@Toblerone45 and everyone else, how are you doing? I hope you have had your results by now and are well on the road to recovery.
