I don’t know what IBM is but I know that SCS is sofa, carpets, specialists

That's what they use on the adverts now as a kind of backronym, but it's not where SCS came from

LatteLady · 20/07/2023 20:47

Yes, because I worked for various senior staff members including the Chief Exec in the UK, for a number of years.

Neighbours87 · 20/07/2023 20:47

Yes international business machines. It’s a common pub quiz question

DragonflyLady · 20/07/2023 20:48

I used to work for a company that was closely associated with IBM and I had no idea what it meant!!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/07/2023 20:49

Yes
Never worked for them or their competitors

WaspLady · 20/07/2023 20:51

I be mad..It’s big now..itchy bum medicine?

BeyondMyWits · 20/07/2023 20:51

Irritating bloody machines... as they were known in our IT department.

aconcernedrelative · 20/07/2023 20:55

In my IT days it was either "I Breed Mediocrity" or "I've Been Moved"!

Wowzel · 20/07/2023 20:55

Yes, but only because my dad worked there for 30+ years.

I have loads of fond memories of IBM.

Christmas Grotto
Christmas teenage disco
Take your child to work day
Office open day
Visit to the factory

I've been mugged surely?
Imbeciles behind machines? But I have never worked with such highly intelligent people. Some of my colleagues blew my mind

MabelFurball · 20/07/2023 22:40

Idiots Become Managers.

EBearhug · 20/07/2023 22:45

Yes, and I knew it even before I became a Unix sys admin for a million years.

HelpMeGetThrough · 20/07/2023 22:55

Have known forever what it means. Have owned some of their kit and also worked on their bigger kit (System/36 and AS/400).

Here's another along the IBM theme..... ICL

HJ40 · 20/07/2023 23:01

Yes, I worked their briefly. At a time when they were withdrawing their short lived black desktop computers and screens from the market because they just couldn't get enough consumer demand. Everyone still wanted the 80s greige colour. How times change...

EBearhug · 20/07/2023 23:09

Ah, I remember AS400. I also did an OS390 course once, too, though I had no interest in working on mainframes.

This is about the time that someone even older than me pipes up with, "VAX was the best."

clary · 20/07/2023 23:10

Yes I know bc it was in a novel I read once.

bluebeardswife7 · 20/07/2023 23:27

No, but I know HAL is the letters next to IBM.

FrostieBoabby · 20/07/2023 23:35

Inter-continental ballistic missile is the first thing that comes to mind followed by the tech company my DH did some sub-contracted work for 20 years ago.

Lavendersquare · 20/07/2023 23:40

Yes, yabu I've known for years what IBM stands for.

mupup · 20/07/2023 23:41

I worked on VAX kit as well, writing endless amounts of COBOL code. Was nicer than writing RPG code for the AS/400.

Still writing code now, but a million miles away from COBOL and RPG.

International Business Machines.

They used to have a very interesting way of becoming the biggest supplier of cash registers. It involved shooting rival sales men (and they were all men then).
