Would you report no MOT

My ex has been driving around with an expired mot since April, according to friends he’s aware it’s expired but can’t afford to get it sorted.

He’s just returned from a golfing weekend, has gym memberships, golf and season tickets. Pays 100 maintenance a month for 2 child due to working cash in hand.

He picks up our son from school a few nights a week. I’m I being unreasonable to think I should report him?

You don't know what you re talking about, DVLA don't deal with no MOTs, they cannot take any action, it is a Police matter.

Exactly, MOTs are the remit of the DSA and they don't send reminders!

You can sign up to get email reminders of when your MOT is due, I signed up both our cars for this and find it quite useful. Obviously this doesn't stop people having no MOT if they don't want to get one but does help innocent people missing it accidentally.

It could have been taxed and insured before the MOT ran out as both run for a year

The insurance will be invalidated as a current MOT will be in the Ts &Cs

Not with all insurances though some will look at roadworthiness, it depends as with all things on individual insurance companies

Daphnis156 · 22/07/2023 09:39

I think the problem is that no one will do anything about it when you report it.
Can't see the police doing anything- they do little enough but always claim to be too busy.
Could deliberately not having the MOT done invalidate insurance?
Could it be reported to his insurer- if there is one!

Oh, that's useful! How do you go about that? We could have done with it last year, my wife drove hers for a month without one.... Tax is due on Dec 31st, insurance in June.

MOT should have been at the end of November, she thought it was near the insurance time. I found out when I tried to tax it.

User894532765 · 22/07/2023 09:47

With tax the car either has to be taxed or sorned so very easy to prove, with MOT you can keep a car on your own property without one so they either have to catch you driving it or parked on a public highway so much more difficult to prove. I can't see the police or any other authority taking time checking parked cars for MOTS so people are generally caught when driving them. Tax has always been chased much more vigorously than other stuff so always best to report through the no tax route if you can.

notsorighteousthesedays · 22/07/2023 09:50

If it has no MOT then it can't be insured, nor will he be paying any road fund licence cos it won't let you without a valid MOT.

If he was stopped it would be seized.

Report now or tell him you will report him if he doesn't sort it all before he next picks your child up.

Stop being complicit in his behaviour - it's not a good look.

betweenfriends · 22/07/2023 09:52

If his car has no MOT then the insurance may also be void.

Do not let him drive your children in this car!!!!

Tax could be 6 months different to MOT, my Mot is in March but my tax is in August, insurance is in May

Tax and MOT dates can be any time difference, the tax date changes every time the car is sold, the MOT date is fixed as soon as the car is originally sold

Unless tor some reason you didn't insure your car when you got it tax and insurance are most likely to to together/6:months apart

SinnerBoy · 22/07/2023 10:02

User894532765

Thanks! I'll look into that shortly.

Shade17 · 22/07/2023 10:07

Of course it’s not, cars have early or late MOTs all the time

Locutus2000 · 22/07/2023 10:07

The £60 cost of an MOT is clearly not the issue - he can't afford the cost of the repairs needed to pass one.

Check the vehicle reg here to see what was flagged at the last ticket.

Check the MOT history of a vehicle

Check the MOT history of a vehicle from 2005 onwards, including if it passed or failed, its mileage and why it failed, download MOT test certificate

Not often, once that you claim. There has to be evidence of a crime, hearsay is not evidence

The evidence relating to no tax,MOT or insurance wasn't hearsay. All of those things can be searched easily online.
Also had cctv of drink driving and witnessed it multiple times so again, not hearsay.
Police didn't give a shit.

Locutus2000 · 22/07/2023 10:09

As others have probably mentioned once the vehicle tax runs out DVLA will be very interested to know, they usually clamp within 24hrs if reported.

Report an untaxed vehicle

Anonymously report an untaxed vehicle that you’ve seen.

But it's no good searching online for no MOT as you can legally keep a car on your drive as long as it's not on the public highway, the online thing isn't going to tell you that. Tax is very clear, you have to have it or sorn.

Not always...... it took them 5 months to clamp my neighbours car 🤷🏼‍♀️

My neighbour was driving his car daily and parking it in the road.... no driveway.

But it's much more bother to check where cars are parked, with tax it is all online so easy to send out a you haven't taxed your car notice and then fine and clamp. Police aren't going to be going round streets checking parked cars, MOTs are generally picked up when a car is stopped whilst driving and eventually it won't be able to be taxed so stopped in that way

GCSister · 22/07/2023 10:36

@User894532765
That's how you'd think it would work. The reality is the police just aren't bothered about having no tax, insurance or MOT even when they're parked next to the car.
Their exact words were 'we don't shit on our own doorstep'.

More fool us for paying out £100s 🤷🏼‍♀️

Maddy70 · 22/07/2023 11:03

If your child is likely to be on an unsafe car I would report it. I'm not sure he's Insured either!

thethreemuskateers · 23/07/2023 10:11

Update- my son text yesterday to say he opened a letter addressed to his Dad-a car tax reminder. So 2.5 years later he still hasn’t changed his address.

I have checked and the car is insured but as other posters say it’s worthless in an accident only covers the third party.

Tax will be due August 1st then if reminder is there, I would see if it gets taxed, much easier to report that than MOT. My reminder never turned up and I haven't moved house for years but it's due August 1st

He's a fool and driving your child around
