Would you report no MOT

thethreemuskateers · 20/07/2023 18:23

My ex has been driving around with an expired mot since April, according to friends he’s aware it’s expired but can’t afford to get it sorted.

He’s just returned from a golfing weekend, has gym memberships, golf and season tickets. Pays 100 maintenance a month for 2 child due to working cash in hand.

He picks up our son from school a few nights a week. I’m I being unreasonable to think I should report him?

Yes, because having no M.O.T also invalidates your insurance.
Would you be happy if you had an accident with an uninsured driver, regardless of who was at fault?
I wouldn't be.

cobden28 · 21/07/2023 19:59

I would most certainly report your ex to the local police ! It isn't safe for your child to be driven around in a car without an MOT as there's the potential for a serious accident there, and then how would you or your ex feel if there was an accident and your son was injured (or worse) because the car wasn't roadworthy?

User894532765 · 21/07/2023 20:20

Is this car parked on private land like a driveway because if it is they can only do anything if they catch him driving it or parking it on a public highway

onefinemess · 21/07/2023 20:58

And, did you read my post?

Ceebeegee · 21/07/2023 21:47

I've recently tried to report a car for no MOT and didn't get anywhere. DvLA website has no way of reporting it, and the police just weren't interested. I reported it to crimestoppers but I think it was a waste of time.
I'd report it for your own conscience but it's higjly unlikely the police will turn up at his door.

And rightly so, if police came out to every petty bs report then they could not focus on real crime..seriously stop wasting police time with that

Hahaha! At the idiots who don't think an MOT violation is worth reporting! So you are basically ok with people driving around in unsafe vehicles? Rhetorical question - of course you are. You are barely more thinking than your most selfish Dawkins gene. Fully prepared to sue if it's your unfortunate offspring that gets mown down.

Report to the Police and DVLA and they will be taken off the road. There are folks who would prefer you don't report. Of course there are.

ChristmasFluff · 21/07/2023 22:32

@BluNomad You know they can check it online in less than 20 seconds?

And if it is on someone's driveway, what are they going to do then

PollyPut · 22/07/2023 00:01

@thethreemuskateers tell him that without an MOT he's putting himself and passengers at risk, his insurance is invalid and soon he can't get his car taxed so he will have to take it off the road. If he doesn't then he could get fined or have it taken away. If he refuses then talk to his parents who hopefully care about their GC

better that he sorts it out himself than he gets fined and then still has to sort it out.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 22/07/2023 01:21

At least be honest with yourself that you are doing it out of spite vs. faux concern.

I'm not sure where you get that impression. It's a criminal offence to drive a car without an MOT.

I can guarantee that if he had an advisory for worn brake pads 15 months ago and hasn't sorted them, that they will be in a dangerous condition now.

Although it's often the tip of the iceberg....
My neighbour had no MOT, tax or insurance and was regularly drink driving. The police didn't care.

Not often, once that you claim. There has to be evidence of a crime, hearsay is not evidence

Well they do, a local woman was recently pulled over on the school run after being reported for no MOT, she also had no full licence.

If the Police don't act, then report this to their Police Commissioner, its this "oh the Police won't do anything" is why we've got the Police Force we have.

Once that you know of & not having a licence is more serious than car not having an MOT. There are far worse crimes than non MOT’d vehicles & the police are inundated with frankly nonsense from people with nothing better to do than waste their time trying seek some sort of justice for petty misconduct

Well, if some "petty" person hadn't dobbed her in for no MOT, they'd never have known about the no licence would they?

An MOT can highlight many safety issues with a vehicle & i bet you'd feel totally different if you were hit by an uninsured driver.

I'm not quite sure why you think having no MOT is not a serious traffic matter? i don't think anyone is comparing it to Mass Murder.

I wasn’t suggesting it’s not a serious traffic matter but it’s not a serious criminal or police matter. The DVLA handle vehicles..tax, insurance & MOT’s & fine those who are in violation. The police do not come out & arrest people for failing to have a valid MOT & the CPS do not prosecute people without MOT’s so stop wasting their time that’s my point. Would you seriously call the emergency services to report someone without an MOT..I sincerely hope not

It’s definitely worth reporting online but it’s possible the police won’t give a shit. I was once pulled over in a car with no MOT, it was the only time I’ve ever missed one, and completely unacceptable on my part. It was several months out of date, but the police didn’t even PNC check the car, they can’t have, obviously they couldn’t be bothered. It was another couple of weeks before I realised the MOT had expired.

They don’t give a shit because it’s not a serious crime worthy of wasting their time & resources. Even if they PNC it flags up no insurance or tax etc you just get a letter in post telling you to sort it within x amount of days or face a fine so report to dvla not police.

SinnerBoy · 22/07/2023 08:03

BluNomad · Today 07:37

The Police do enforcement drives and clamp, or tow untaxed cars. If they're untaxed, there are usually other violations, as you can see on those traffic police programmes.

In OP's case, her ex is driving with a dangerous defect, if his brakes are shot.

You don't know what you re talking about, DVLA don't deal with no MOTs, they cannot take any action, it is a Police matter.

Of course no one should use 999 for no MOT, thats why there are other, non emergency, means to report & if the Police refuse to take action, then report this to the PCC.

The Police are there to uphold the law, they shouldn't be choosing which ones they enforce, thats up to Parliament and they ve deemed its a legal requirement to have an MOT, punishable by a fine of £100 and 3 penalty points (in the first instance)
