To take DS to GP?

My DS (7) has been been complaining that his tummy hurts on and off for a couple of weeks now.

He's also become strangely obsessed with doing poos and worrying about them. He's pooing daily, but keeps saying "I think I need a poo" multiple times a day and going to sit on the loo.

Sorry if TMI but when he does go all is normal, he's not constipated, doesn't have the runs either.

We have explained to him that he's pooing a normal amount (usually 1-2 times day, occasionally misses a day), all is fine, etc. and not to worry about it. But still it continues.

The trouble is, he seems well enough in himself, no other symptoms or concerns. He'll complain about his tummy one minute, but then be playing perfectly normally and happily the next...

I have wondered if it's nerves/butterflies (he's a bit of a worrier) but he says not.
He showed me today where it's hurting and pointed to his sides, just under the his ribs.

I can't work out if I'd be OTT to take him to the GP as this has been rumbling on for a while, without any real concrete symptoms, or if they'll think I'm being ridiculous and wasting their time...

I would take him - it can’t hurt. I made the mistake of ignoring my daughters tummy ache when she was around the same age - I had put it down to anxiety about returning to school post Covid. It turned out she had Coeliacs.

Have you tried directly asking him what’s up though?

It doesn’t seem like an urgent problem so I would probably make a diary for the next 2 weeks of food/drinks, toilet habits and tummy ache symptoms and see if there’s any correlation. You can then take that to the doctor with you if either you find a problem or it’s getting worse.
Also, have you checked for/treated him for threadworm? That can make them feel like they need the toilet more due to the itching and could possibly give a tummy ache too.
