Andrew Neil tweeting, once again - it's going to get messy

Facebook group of close to 10,000 former customers who say their NatWest accounts were closed down are sharing templates and instructions on how to lodge Subject Access Requests with the bank demanding any dossiers on them. As I wrote this morning, Nat West/Coutts now entering a world of pain

This could be a huge can of worms.

I wonder if they’ll take a tip from the Stasi who rushed to destroy as many records as they could when they saw the tide turning after the Berlin Wall came down.

Swrigh1234 · 20/07/2023 20:11

Also Farage submitting another subject access request to find out who gave his personal financials information to the BBC.

Would like to see NatWest defend itself. As for the BBC, it’s full of morons.

Diversity hired three away the wonderful reputation the first few generations built up at the BBC. It all went downhill from the 70s.

While I think closing bank accounts of people for being nasty racists is a worrying road to go down (even paedophiles need bank accounts). I would prefer to see NF try to argue in court that he's not a nasty racist. I notice nobody has tried to say he isn't any of the names Coutts called him, just that they shouldn't close his account because of it.

So? It's not about whether he's a person you approve of or not. It's about the power banks should/shouldn't have over people they don't like.

Well the CEO of NatWest has already said that the way Farage was characterised in the documents "does not reflect the view of the bank". So there's that. It probably wouldn't be much of an argument on that basis.

In any case, this ends with Coutts settling for an undisclosed sum, not a court hearing.

Could NF insist on a court hearing or would he have to accept an out of court settlement?

Yeh Coutts stuffed up

HRTQueen · 20/07/2023 21:13

I think it’s best Farage wasn’t given any more publicity over this

he will twist this and drag the story out it’s between himself and Coutts

the man has done enough damage

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 20/07/2023 21:13

I notice nobody has tried to say he isn't any of the names Coutts called him, just that they shouldn't close his account because of it.

Well, no. That's kind of the point.

Most people absolutely do think he's all of those things, I certainly do.

But that's not a reason to deny him banking. None of what he's provably done is illegal, and of the illegal things that have been alledged, Coutts clearly state there is no evidence they've been able to discover.

To bring it into something that would affect more people - An awful lot of people are pro-choice. Probably an equal number are pro-birth. They would disagree with each other on an almost visceral level. It would be absolutely outrageous for a bank to decide their ethos was towards one side or the other and debank everyone who has any links to Marie Stopes. Or anyone who's ever donated to SPUC.

I'd argue that most of the damage is self inflicted by Coutts.

TheKeatingFive · 20/07/2023 21:17

Even if it was, banks supply services to people who've been convicted of crimes - so the grounds for denying people they don't like are ... absolutely ridiculous.

He can refuse and push for a hearing. It's his right to try and establish legal precedent rather than merely be compensated if he wishes. It seldom happens though.

Completely agree - banks shouldn't discriminate no matter anyone's beliefs.

The irony is that banks are no moral arbiter themselves, given their track records!

What about all the other people who are now saying they’ve also had their bank accounts closed? Should their experiences also be brushed under the carpet?

On the one hand I don't think he's principled enough to refuse a guaranteed wodge of cash but on the other hand I think he's politically savvy enough to milk this to bolster his 'man of the people' persona. I think it would come down to whether they make him an offer too good to refuse.

I would like to see this thrashed out in court because the majority of the people who could find themselves in the same situation will not have the resources or platform NF does and they will be completely screwed without a bank account.

NF will be fine whatever happens.

Gothambutnotahamster · 20/07/2023 21:29

Totally agree @FOJN

Swrigh1234 · 20/07/2023 21:50

The woke are really tying themselves up in knots over this. Yeah but, not but, yeah but. They never learn.

WrigglyDonCat · 20/07/2023 21:51

Whatever you think of Nigel Farage and his politics and opinions, he is one of the great public communicators and self publicists of his generation.

Did none of the highly educated, highly paid members the committee who unanimously agreed to ditch him on some pretty flimsy grounds think that perhaps he wouldn't just go quietly?

If you are going to mess someone like that around, anyone with even a grain of intelligence must realise that you have to do everything completely and totally by the book. Otherwise it is just a corporate game of pass the parcel played with a live pinless grenade as the parcel. You know it's going to blow up in your face, the only question is when...

Proves we should let the market decide & not have intrusive regulation.

This screw up by them, no matter that i think they have the right to decide who they have as a customer, is going to be costly for them.

Farage as always, can never resist some publicity and the MSM always seem to oblige him.

Barbadossunset · 20/07/2023 21:58

Badchild would you say that if say Greta Thunberg had had her bank account closed on the grounds the bank didn’t approve of her views?

They did actually consider there was a risk he would go public, its mentioned in the documents released from the SAR. It doesn't reflect well on them, it makes them look pretty stupid.
