Or if we mess up the jet stream, arctic winters.

We have really messed up horrifically, haven't we.

I am scared its too late to put right

Just to remind people.

20% reduction in UKs carbon emissions in the pandemic.

20%!!!

That is absolutely huge. And it does make a difference, and really any reduction in the future temperature is really crucial and worth doing.

And this is mainly from a reduction in car use.

SpinCycles · 18/07/2023 10:05

That’s actually not true. The temperature rise can be moderated by actions now.
Read the science!

🙄🙄🙄

I have. Unlike many on this thread including you, it seems.

AIBot · 18/07/2023 10:06

@PimmsandCucumbers individual actions can make a difference, especially if a lot of people are doing them.

….but reducing fossil fuel use is the single most impactful action that can be taken at a National or global level.

We need to do both, take individual actions but also push for change on a national level.

It's not going to happen.

What can we do ? What can I do personally?

I recycle and reuse as much as possible, I don’t own a car (never have) , have never been abroad. But I do have a large family. What else can I do as an individual that would help and what can I teach my dc to do that will also help ?

I keep hearing people say in rl well there’s no point as all these big countries are polluting so much but surely individuals can make a difference but i don’t know what more I should/could do ?

I think for you, the main things are energy use in the home from a big family. You already don’t own a car which is great, the biggest contributor. But if you reduced energy use and switched to renewable energy - solar panels / pumps and switched from gas to renewable electric, that’s probably the second most powerful thing you can do.

It's a comfortable lie for people that means they can helplessly shrug their shoulders and carry on as before having convinced themselves that nothing they do will make a difference.

I don't believe this.
Its industry that has to change to make any true or meaningful impact but of course the narrative is on individual people to make the change - while at the same time making money from us - paying for the higher price and privilege of eco friendly products and food.

You don't get to tell people where and what to post so wind it in, and maybe add something to discussion.

@Againstmachine

oh wind it in yourself. Your comment added nothing to the discussion except bile.

Funny that you think YOU can tell people where & when to post.

At the very least support morally or otherwise Just Stop Oil and the variants who are prepared to go to prison to sound the alarm. They totally get it.

Yes.

Yet the main reaction to them is to slag them off and be glad when they're arrested.

Insulate Britain similarly - when everyone was losing their minds this time last year about the rise of the energy price caps, all the demands were for government help with bills, which was what we got. That money went straight to the energy companies. What could those billions have done for improving insulation and therefore resilience to price shocks?

Fossil fuel use is mainly us.

It’s mainly cars and energy use in the home.

So if we reduce / stop cars and switch to home renewable energy. Which is really not that hard in the grand scheme of things, then we stop using fossil fuels.

Most fossil fuel use in the UK is not industry, it’s homes and cars.

Mikimoto · 18/07/2023 10:11

Just reduce meat, dairy and car use.
If everyone does all that a bit, the change will be massive.

We in the UK are the people who BUY fossil fuels. They will keep giving it to us whilst we keep buying it.

And mostly it’s cars and energy use in homes.

DeanElderberry · 18/07/2023 10:12

It's happening, it isn't a product of different measuring techniques. Archaeologists all over the far north are collecting artefacts and natural remains that have been buried in permanent ice for millennia - fascinating and terrifying.

sugartree · 18/07/2023 10:12

We need to start implementing radical disincentives so people have children and there are fewer consumers. There are far too many people on Earth and each new human has a massive carbon footprint, especially in the West and causes increased demand for food, water, energy. We should start taxing people who have more than two children (the replacement rate) and definitely should not be encouraging people to have more children via the welfare system. It's bonkers in such a climate.

SpinCycles · 18/07/2023 10:12

Lol. Only because we've offshored manufacturing and industry and much of our food and energy production so it doesn't show up in our figures.

Let us all know how you get on with no heating or electricity or food or clothes or new products manufactured abroad and report back.

Popworld · 18/07/2023 10:14

What ever we do to cut emissions in this country is a drop in the ocean. Until the much much bigger countries get on board it's almost pointless

RTFT.

Exponential population decline is set in motion already everywhere outside sub-Saharan Africa.

EvelynKatie · 18/07/2023 10:14

PimmsandCucumbers · 18/07/2023 09:50

That’s totally wrong. Our UK emissions reduced by 20% over the pandemic just from people not using their cars as much. That’s a huge reduction.

For some reason everyone seems to think that it’s the big fossil fuel companies and China that have all the power to change and we have none. But we BUY the fuels and exports - and if we stop in the west by switching to public transport and changing our home energy use we can reduce emissions by a huge amount.

The whole push from organisations to get people back into offices is a strange one. Most of the time just for presenteeism. Public transport in much areas of this country is non-existant, or poor and expensive. Meaning people are driving, simply to sit in an office and do the same job as they can do from home, and no wasteful emissions.

25sheets · 18/07/2023 10:14

It is too late. What a mess we're leaving and in the meantime everyone is flying off on holiday willy nilly, drivers feeling entitled to drive wherever they want through our cities and half a mile away to pick up a pint of milk.

JonahAndTheSnail · 18/07/2023 10:15

John Kerry is in China at the moment to discuss it.

They have had so many discussions.

However "luckily" there is currently record breaking heat in both the US and China. If you look at a heat map of the Northern Hemisphere at the moment it's startling. We appear to be almost the only place that isn't in it..

heckmuffin · 18/07/2023 10:17

I'm actually not very convinced by the alarmist 'science'.

But I also live a very low-impact lifestyle. Generally walk or cycle everywhere, no kids, have flown twice in about 20 years, own one very efficient car, have a small house etc.

To all the people who really believe the predictions of doom and death: if you really believe that we're heading for annihilation, why aren't you living like I do?

NewNovember · 18/07/2023 10:18

Last years summer was glorious it's wonderful to have a decent summer and really help people with certain pain conditions. It was no hotter that many countries always have been.

Spreadbed · 18/07/2023 10:18

I will preface this because I don’t know how true/accurate this is.

I once read that it makes no difference what the general population does, the only way real change will happen is if the billionaires and mega corporations change their ways and stop their super consumption. So essentially we are powerless.
