Or if we mess up the jet stream, arctic winters.

We have really messed up horrifically, haven't we.

I am scared its too late to put right

@A303 there's a new educational documentary out soon "How to Tame your Fire Ant".

Joking apart.

The reason we are not doing enough to limit climate change is because the vast majority of us do not really believe climate change is serious enough to disrupt the quality of our lives, let alone wipe out humankind.

Let me ask a question. Who here has given up all of the following in the last 10 years:

  • Meat
  • Passports
  • 'Sunday' driving

Anybody?

Why would you expect anyone to do any of these things?

King Charles jets around the world to various functions, Sunak does similar and built a swimming pool recently, even getting a new 3 phase supply in to heat it.

If the people in charge just talk about it, well, the population won't change.

Fwiw i think people are concerned but business and politicians are carrying on as before, so we all do, 99.9% of people want to be led.

Daftasabroom · 20/07/2023 20:33

@helford your post is really (genuinely) interesting.

While I find your overall POV really frustrating, your 99.9% comment is actually really thought provoking.

I don't eat much meat, and never have done

I have a passport solely for identification purposes and have never left my own country (I haven't even flown within my own country)

I don't drive and walk everywhere, if I leave town it is by public transport.

For those of us that have the privilege of working in a bit of this space, it's easy to think that everyone else has a similar level of awareness. Easily done I guess when you live and breath it.

I guess this goes for any kind of specialist.

I try to be tempered in my responses, I'll try harder.

Things like this are a perfect example: project abandoned because it's no longer viable for Sweden's state energy company to develop this UK project and make an immediate profit.

Why are we auctioning this stuff off and asking Sweden's state energy company to do it? Why can't we build and run our own infrastructure, like most other countries?

Why do we need other countries' state providers to run our energy, transport and water infrastructure for profit??

We voted to sell everything off and now do not have the expertise to do these projects in house.

TBF though, its not abandoned, its that they want a higher cost cost per unit generated..... i.e more expensive electricity for us.

I think rather more worrying, is the failure to convince Uxbridge voters of the benefits of the ULEZ policy, its incredible really, they voted to try and keep heavily polluting vehicles on the road & damage the health of themselves and their children.

MangoItaliano · 21/07/2023 08:19

Yes, and the Vattenfall company doesn't exactly have a squeaky clean historical reputation when it comes to bribery and corruption. Much like the government that awarded the contract.

Funny that.

I often wonder if our dedicated recycling efforts are actually recycled. Even if they are, surely it takes energy of some sort to make it into something else?

I have just recycled 4 yogurt pots, 2 fresh cream cartons and 2 yogurt drink bottles. I used a good bit of water to get them in a fit state to go in the recycling bin. Should I bother washing them, or should I just use up water every day? I hate wasting water, but I like to think it's not waste it is helping the recycling effort, but is it?

I stick them all in the dishwasher tbh then into the recycling

Divinericepudding · 21/07/2023 09:35

A303 · 20/07/2023 17:34

Yep I do like a light moment. Light and very dry.

Yes I loved the bit about the ants eating the ponies...not sure what that says about me!

Grannyolive · 20/07/2023 17:29

There has always been global warning, how do you think the ice age finally warmed up.
Its all to do with even more taxes, getting the gullible to buy a useless electric car. How is electricity made, it doesn’t just appear from out the ground.
The powers that be are putting bus lanes everywhere which will make congestion worse, a great time to introduce ULEZ. You’re being misled.

Omg, how many times. You don't really think none of this is to do with human activity do you??

Daftasabroom · 21/07/2023 09:37

Lol, no we most certainly don't or we would be.

SpinCycles · 21/07/2023 10:10

I don't think that's the reason @helford . We have some of the best engineers in the world. It's Government ideology, outsource everything and make no investment in our infrastructure as a public good. And the chickens are coming home to roost now.

lieselotte · 21/07/2023 12:19

5hrssleepaverage · 20/07/2023 12:08

@LittleApartmentOnThePrairie to be fair I listened to an interview with a spokesperson from Greenpeace and she said the same. Whilst as individuals we should all do our bit, it makes minimal difference unless countries like China change their emissions etc! Sad, but as individuals we have very little control apart from voting in the right parties to power to bring about global change!

No but what we do DOES affect us locally. So we can plant trees, reduce pollution and not waste water. That all helps the local environment, even if China and India are increasing emissions generally and Putin lays waste to Ukraine and blows things up pumping yet more crap into the atmosphere.

lieselotte · 21/07/2023 12:20

Even if you don't agree climate change is down to humans, improving the local environment and not wasting resources are good things to do.

Swansandcustard · 21/07/2023 12:21

I genuinely think it’s going to head towards an apocalyptic scenario of haves/have nots. The have are currently doing little to mitigate or plan ahead for further damage to the climate. Food, water and places to live will become more and more scarce and therefore more and more expensive. Healthcare drifting towards the provenance of the rich, further education is becoming less and less affordable for working class families, and social mobility grinding to a halt. I guess survival of the fittest in this situation means survival of the wealthiest (more often than not born into it, not from ‘working hard’ - whatever the fuck that means). There will be mass migration, and wars, people literally fighting to stay alive (wonder what it was like as one human species moved into the territories of the original inhabitants).

yes, it’s evolution, but it’s not natural evolution.

and everything @SpinCycles says

frumpalertt · 21/07/2023 12:27

In answer to A303's questions: I eat an (almost) vegan diet (I am eating eggs right now because of a health issue that means I have been advised to get extra protein). I haven't flown for 5 years, and go abroad by public transport. I have a car and do not do 'Sunday' driving. I use it more than I should (a couple of journeys a week) because I am effectively disabled at the moment, but I will have surgery in the next 4-6 months that should be curative, after which I intend to use it only rarely.

Honestly, none of this is really a great inconvenience. Changes like this do not deserve to be greeted with horror and fear, because they're laughably minor. (Nor do they deserve some kind of shining halo! They're easy!).

Daftasabroom · 21/07/2023 13:14

helford · 21/07/2023 10:06

Lol, no we most certainly don't or we would be.

We are.

The majority of the Vattenfall employees developing the site would be UK employees, the majority of the supply chain would be UK based.

The research and development would be undertaken by the UK Catapults.

The UK is THE world leader in offshore wind with more than 3x the installed capacity of no 2 Denmark. More than half of Europe's offshore wind has been installed by the UK.

I don't understand why you are so keen to run our country down when you clearly know nothing about renewable technology.

Renewable energy is genuinely something we lead the world on and something we should be proud of.

Daftasabroom · 21/07/2023 13:17

Oops 2x and Germany.

MsRosley · 21/07/2023 16:02

SpinCycles · 20/07/2023 11:50

And water may become one of the world's most precious resources. Yet we squander our abundant supply of it.

You really couldn't make it up, the complete lack of any forethought or planning. And it's incredibly frustrating that people say they are scared about what will happen but do nothing to pressure politicians to make the above issues policy priorities. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Then when it's too late it'll be all "why didn't anybody do anything?".

I don't disagree with your arguments, SpinCycles, but frankly pressuring our politicians in a democracy is fruitless. They know damn well that if they even started to address this with real political action, they'd be voted out in a heart beat. I am sure governments are well aware what we are heading into, but know they are helpless to do much about it.

MsRosley · 21/07/2023 16:06

We should all be forced to watch Way To Go: Life at the End of Empire. That film changed the way I thought about everything.

MsRosley · 21/07/2023 16:06

Sorry, that should be What A Way to Go: Life at the End of Empire.
