£600 Taylor Swift tickets?

Birdfeather · 17/07/2023 13:56

We got a Taylor Swift code to try and purchase tickets for our daughters/friends.

The two dates we chose (in advance) to use our code against to try and get tickets, went on sale today.

Despite being in waiting room as soon as I was able and being 5600ish in queue once the sale
room opened, by the time my number came round I could not secure tickets.

Well that’s a lie - I could if I wanted to spend £300 or £600 on a VIP package.

AIBU or does that just price out the average fan? Or am I still living in the past remembering how £25 for a NKOTB ticket was expensive?!

I should add, the two sales were both today - the first this morning and I was in the sale room within 26 mins. The second and I was in the sale room within 19 mins.

There are still £600 and £300 tickets left now.

Tickets seem fairly average price I have paid anything up to about £200 for concert tickets each, The VIP tickets seem to be the fairly standard overpriced amount. I think I paid about £200 for Elton John and Rolling Stones, recently £140 for Rod Stewart. These were all seated tickets

User538765 · 18/07/2023 20:51

Stubhub is a reseller so always overpriced like Viagogo, to be avoided

IhaveanewTVnow · 18/07/2023 20:58

I was the same today. Got into queue with 2750 ahead of me which i was really Positive about (thinking in my head Wembley must hold 50,000). By the time I got to buy the only tickets were £300 and £600. Very disappointed but I did like the IT system.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 18/07/2023 21:03

If she wanted to make sure every person who tries to buy a ticket just in the US got a ticket, she would have to tour constantly for about ten years.

There are 20,000 fans turning up outside the 70,000 seat stadiums to sing along! (And having a whale of a time by the look of it.)

Demand is more than she can possibly supply. And why the hell shouldn't she make money? She's worked her arse off for years.

I knew I wanted to see this tour, so I bought the Midnights album and got the presale code. Bought tickets for me and DD, £125 a ticket, really good seats, took twenty minutes. Can't fault it.

Totally ridiculous to suggest she should be selling tickets for £25 on the door like the old days 🙄

I saw Rod Stewart on ShowFilmFirst at the 02 a few years back and Milton Keynes (Central Tickets) for £5 and £10 respectively - i.e they didn't sell out and comped the tickets on seat filling sites. Sorry !

Uber capitalist Taylor scalps her fans shock - this was from 2017 she has it down to a fine art now. Girrrlll power supreme !

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffreydorfman/2017/09/12/taylor-swift-look-what-capitalism-made-me-do/

A current example of Taylor Swift's role as a capitalist is the mechanism she has constructed to ensure tickets for her upcoming tour go first to fans, not to scalpers. She is doing this by having fans sign up on her website and buy her merchandise in order to earn a higher ticket priority. The more merchandise purchased, the better chance fans will have of securing concert tickets. This strategy has mixed impacts on fans, but a very positive impact on Taylor's bottom line.
Some fans would have managed to get tickets anyway, and this maneuver will cost them more money. More people will now manage to get tickets directly from the sale rather than through a reseller; based on her past tours, these fans will save money relative to buying tickets in the secondary market even accounting for the merchandise they purchase. Overall, fans will likely save money.
In addition, Taylor Swift will earn a lot of money from all the merchandise sales, which is currently the most profitable economic activity a musician has. In today's music industry, a performer makes little money from downloads or music streaming services. The real profits come from concert tours and much of the profit from touring actually comes from merchandise sales, not the ticket revenue. A tour such as Taylor Swift's is very expensive to mount so production costs eat into the profit. However, tour merchandise is inexpensive to produce and sports sky-high profit margins.

You do realise you didn't have to pay anything for the midnights pre sale. There was an option to not purchase the album and just get a code.

i dont think anyones complaining about the normal ticket prices

its the fact that seemingly quite a lot of tickets are held back to be sold as “VIP” that seems suspect. When “VIP” just basically means much much more expensive for exactly the same thing.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 18/07/2023 21:56

We have no idea how many tickets are held back as packages, though do we? All the midnights code people have bought their tickets last week, what if the allocation for the midnights codes was 50% of all tickets? And then the thousands of people buying tickets in these sales this week - each person who gets to the front of the queue can buy 4 tickets, so yeah, they are going to disappear quickly and the expensive packages will be the ones left til last. But some people will want the packages and some people will be willing to pay to ensure a decent seat.

Apologies if the figures re. allocations are out, I haven't seen any.

justanothermummma · 18/07/2023 22:00

I think presale got first dibs on all tickets so all that appears to be left is the expensive VIP packages! There are loooads of Facebook groups selling tickets already.

We managed to get 3 standing tickets for £95 each plus fees, so came to about £331 - but we had a presale code with buying the Midnights album. We're driving to the concert mind as some hotels were £900+!!!

I'm a fan but £600 is madness! X

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 18/07/2023 22:02

We're driving there and back too - basic Travelodge hotels are £350 a night! And sold out!

Yup! The hotels were sold out the second the tour was announced 😅

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 18/07/2023 22:08

Luckily I can stay with family about two hours' drive from the stadium 😣gonna be a late night! Worth it though.

christmastreefarm · 18/07/2023 22:08

I have a family room in Edinburgh to release at premier inn if it's any use to anyone. Fri & sat night.

savory · 18/07/2023 22:16

I'm one bus ride away from the O2 - we should get on AirBnB and charge 200 quid for our spare bedroom - it's what Taylor would have wanted !

Anyone after liverpool tickets willing to pay over £300 but absolutely not fucking £600 - there are still hospitality tickets left.

Register for free with lfc to get a supporter ID and ring them up.

I just managed to get 2 tickets with a meal and drinks included.

There should have been some sort of gesture towards those stalwart fans who have grown with her

There was - the pre-sale for those who bought a physical copy of the Midnights album back in October. That's how I got tickets for DD & I.

You didn’t even have to buy the album. You could register at that time for a code for the presale without buying the album.

Butterflyfluff · 19/07/2023 13:16

Is it true that the lead ticket holder has to attend?

I read that yesterday (but in the DM so likely untrue)

If true it will be a problem for people who’ve bought them for others, although would stop the inflated resale prices.

CarpeDiemCarpeDontem · 19/07/2023 13:24

The presale was open for 2 months last year and there was a no purchase necessary option where you could just get the presale code by signing up. It worked really well!

there is a whole thread about that on MN. I don't think I'm allowed to link other threads? But you can search for it.

Basically according to this, yes it is leader booker. https://help.ticketmaster.co.uk/hc/en-us/articles/360001622297-Lead-Booker-Events

But I don't actually believe it will be enforceable.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 19/07/2023 13:33

My DD has managed to get tickets for under £100 this morning so there are obviously various ticket categories still being released. DD is very happy.

wonderstuff · 19/07/2023 13:47

My dd got the tickets she wanted this morning, I think given the demand the lottery style system was the fairest. I do think viagogo and the like should be banned, was gutting to not be able to get Foos tickets and see so many on viagogo at ridiculous prices.

resipsa · 19/07/2023 13:54

Second 'off waitlist' email with same outcome as first - only £600 + packages left 🤷‍♀️
