Pre-pay smart meter question

DirtyNumbAngel · 16/07/2023 16:21

Hi, may I preface this by saying I'm not the sharpest tool in the box.

I'm on a pre-pay smart meter (Utilita)
I thought it would be a good idea to try and 'stockpile' gas and electric credit over the spring/summer to use in autumn/winter. My question is does pre-paid energy have an 'expiry date?' Because I thought I was being sensible and after a conversation with a relative I'm really worried. I've tried the live chat on Utilita but it hasn't helped and the phone number they give they say is for emergencies only.
Please can someone advise if I'm wasting my money?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

I add more than I need through the year to make sure I have enough to cover the extra at winter and in case I have a cash flow emergency/job loss etc so there's enough on my meters for 2-3months worth of energy if I am unable to top up for any reason. I've been doing it for a few years and haven't had any issues, didn't occur to me that it could ever expire but I believe there is a maximum amount of credit that you can have on there.

It should be fine. Some will go obviously as the standing charge will be taken off, but it seems like a good idea.
