Rain, rain and more rain

I'm grateful I'm not boiling to death like parts of Europe BUT the 14day forecast here in the North West is awful. I only want my washing to dry on the line.

I've got a horrible feeling its going to be a washout now until September. Fed up.

Yeah I'm not excited by the forecasts either! it feels like its rained every day for weeks now. Generally there are some sunny spells though so get out while you can!

Elphame · 16/07/2023 10:40

I'm sick to death of the wind. It feels like we've had wind for weeks, and it's a cold one too.

Yesterday it was gale force with thunder and hailstorms in between the torrential rain.

Today it's unbroken grey cloud and still blowing a bloody gale. I am so over this. To be honest 45C sounds very appealing right now.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/07/2023 13:09

Looking out at my lush green garden, I'd rather have this than >40°C heat - I can't imagine what that's like, and British houses and infrastructure aren't designed for those sorts of temperature. And at least we did get some sun and dry weather earlier in the year.

I did curse the rain when I found a poor fledgling blackbird drowned in my wheelbarrow just now though.

sandrene · 16/07/2023 13:12

I'd much much rather have this than the awful heat in the rest of Europe. I think we're extremely lucky actually

ErrolTheDragon · 16/07/2023 13:14

Which forecast are you using, OP? I'm in the northwest of England, the met office forecast here is dry for the rest of the day until thr evening, sunny tomorrow, ok Tuesday morning and sun&clouds but probably dry Wednesday and Thursday.

Gymnopedie · 16/07/2023 13:14

I'd been thinking about starting the same thread. Also in the North West and absolutely sick of it.

I'd had the same thought about the horrifying temperatures in southern Europe, but does it have to go to the other extreme? I don't care if it isn't wall to wall clear blue sky, but at least can we have warm and ffs DRY!

Unclecornelius · 16/07/2023 13:15

Did it rain where you are yesterday OP because it was St Swithins day, and if it rains then you get 40 days if it apparently.

I'm looking at the BBC forecast. I'll look at the Met Office if that's better. Ever the optimist.

There is nowhere in the UK blowing a gale right now - I just checked.

Send a bit of rain (not too much mind!) our way - vegetation is still a little crispy down in London after the very warm June weather.

shadowchancesassy · 16/07/2023 13:21

I'm in the south east it's lovely and warm here but very windy which is doing wonders for my washing! A few showers today but nothing like it's been all week ☔️

Oddsockday · 16/07/2023 13:21

I'm in Lancashire/North Manchester. I have managed to get some washing out and next bit of rain is due about 3pm but it's windy so should be dry by then.
Tomorrow is thunderstorms and rain. Using met office app.

Yes. Thoroughly depressing summer so far after an awful grey and rainy winter. In spring it looked nice outside but there was a constant icy wind. Then just a couple of weeks of respite of decent early summer weather and now back to this awfulness of grey/ rain/ wind. It's really getting me down.

Lionoso · 16/07/2023 13:22

They need to move school holidays to June/July. I say this every year.

Badger1970 · 16/07/2023 13:25

I must admit that I smothered a groan when looking outside this morning - I'm back to having to wash the dogs feet most walks, as the fields have got really muddy again. We're limited with walks as it is due to crops and long grass. And I don't really like wearing wellies in July - just feels wrong. This is in the South West and we've had horrendous rain in the last week.

My grandson just said "Nan, your lawn needs mowing" - I only did it on Wednesday ffs!

Oddsockday · 16/07/2023 13:30

June was glorious here. It's turned in the last 2 weeks.

wholivesondrurylane · 16/07/2023 13:31

the only upside is not to have to hear people complaining about the heat, it's quite refreshing.

At least we are off to a sunny beach for the summer holiday, but I feel sorry for people who planned a camping holiday. It must be miserable.

There is nowhere in the UK blowing a gale right now - I just checked.

We had a weather warning for wind yesterday in the SE.

I live on the 13th floor right on the Thames, and the wind yesterday was so intense I had to bring all my potted plants in from the balcony because they were being knocked over and thrown around by the wind. Couldn't even open my balcony door because the wind was roaring in and knocking things over inside my flat.

Obviously being up high made the wind more intense but yes it was pretty windy. Though mostly sunny and windy, with scattered intense but short period of rain.

A gale has a specific definition, average wind speeds of 28 to 55 knots (over 32mph). So while we don't have gale force winds, the fact that plants are in full leaf and flower means that the effect of the lower wind speeds is greater.

Personally it doesn’t bother me but I think peoples expectations of summer in England are out of sync. We tend to get some lovely, sunny weather late May, June, early July. That’s it, that’s summer over. August cos often be dull.

gale or not, tree down on one road blocking access and I just saw reminders to attach your tents properly with photos of a couple of tents blown onto the road, so there's a bit of a breeze around here 😂

Gruffling · 16/07/2023 13:46

People are dying of the extreme heat in Europe.

Bring on the rain.

then we get floods, it's not that much better

I am really, really grateful for a cool summer. Feel so sorry for people in Africa, Asia and southern Europe right now.
