Rain, rain and more rain

I'm grateful I'm not boiling to death like parts of Europe BUT the 14day forecast here in the North West is awful. I only want my washing to dry on the line.

I've got a horrible feeling its going to be a washout now until September. Fed up.

@Gruffling

Our rain isn’t really helping them right now though is it?
or maybe it is?
fuck knows.

I always find summer is over though usually by August. By late August it’s often positively autumnal.

It feels oddly comforting reading this thread

There's something about stormy weather when you're cuddled up inside that feels super cosy.

I made a big Moroccan vegetable stew and watched Seance on a Wet Afternoon yesterday, with the wind and rain lashing my floor to ceiling windows all around me.

Curiosity101 · 16/07/2023 13:58

I'm loving this weather, I suspect farmers aren't keen on it though. I'm not a huge fan of the wind but the temperature is lovely and the rain is fine. I get that it's tricky for hanging laundry out cause you're constantly going to be bringing stuff in/out. We have an airer for inside though.

FWIW forecasts for August - September are that we'll end up in a massive heatwave (much like Europe is now). I'm dreading that.

bonfirebash · 16/07/2023 13:58

I'm in Lancashire and contemplating putting the duvet back on the bed, it's dropped cold

At least some good news on the horizon then! Given that people here call anything over 25° a heatwave, it should be pleasant. 😊☀️ Or do you mean actually 40° like in central and southern Europe now, but for two months? That seems very unlikely.

Silvered · 16/07/2023 14:16

OP you sound like your near me. I know what you mean. Gusty wind, sunny one minute and then slinging it down the next. Met office has it raining here for some or all of the day for the next 10.

It's nice not to have to water the garden, and good for making sure the reservoir levels are topped up, but I'd love it if we could have the odd day here and there where I could get the washing out!

There is nowhere in the UK blowing a gale right now - I just checked.

I’m close to the highest point of the Mendips. . It was most certainly blowing hard this morning!!

ErrolTheDragon · 16/07/2023 13:14

Which forecast are you using, OP? I'm in the northwest of England, the met office forecast here is dry for the rest of the day until thr evening, sunny tomorrow, ok Tuesday morning and sun&clouds but probably dry Wednesday and Thursday.

Oh I'll have your Met Office forecast please. I am going to RHS Tatton on Thursday and I would prefer it not to be pouring down all day

Flickersy · 16/07/2023 15:10

ErrolTheDragon · 16/07/2023 13:09

Looking out at my lush green garden, I'd rather have this than >40°C heat - I can't imagine what that's like, and British houses and infrastructure aren't designed for those sorts of temperature. And at least we did get some sun and dry weather earlier in the year.

I did curse the rain when I found a poor fledgling blackbird drowned in my wheelbarrow just now though.

Store your wheelbarrow stood on its end against a wall or a fence, then this won't happen and it will stop the bucket of the barrow going rusty.

June was record breaking for heat. July is so far average to slightly below average temperatures. It's unremarkable, temperature wise.

Given the severe drought conditions we had last year and the impact that had on wildlife and our food prices, I wouldn't be too quick to wish the rain away. Rain is the lifeblood of our entire food chain.

They need to move school holidays to June/July. I say this every year.

Absolutely. I also say this every year.

Workquestion11 · 16/07/2023 15:16

School holidays began end of June
Think we've had 2 nice days so far
The kids are miserable because they can't get out and play
It really is getting to me now

ThinWomansBrain · 16/07/2023 15:17

its supposed to be nice in a couple of weekends' time - I looked earlier because I'm going to a festival.
I've eschewed camping though, so not too fussed.

ohtowinthelottery · 16/07/2023 15:23

It's been at least 2 weeks since I've had to water my pots and baskets as it has rained every day here - some days in biblical proportions. There were 2 car accidents in the space of an hour near here yesterday which the police put down to the weather conditions. We've only had a few spots of rain so far today though so washing is drying on the line. - but the forecast for the coming weeks isn't great.

It's nearly always like this in July. It will improve as soon as the schools go back on the 14th August.

YackyDah · 16/07/2023 15:29

I'm inright now Spain right now and it's been 28/29/30 and lovely. Nowhere near 45

WonderingWanda · 16/07/2023 15:31

August has been like this pretty much every year since 2007 with the exception of last year. It's pretty standard that the jet stream shifts up and we get lots of wet weather. Earlier spring, earlier autumn. All down to climate change.

LeggyLinda · 16/07/2023 15:32

Feels more like winter than summer here.
I feel enormously guilty for thinking it, but find myself wishing for a little bit of the European heatwave.

Cuddled and cosy ought to be kept for December, and even then it's 🤮

Teapleasebobb · 16/07/2023 15:39

I just want to get on top of my washing again
Sad. Put 2 loads out today in the Hope that they'll dry but they're wetter now than they were when I took them out of the washing machine!

Dulra · 16/07/2023 15:52

Similar weather in Ireland our primary schools finished end of June think it's rained ever since. June was gorgeous so my two secondary kids who were off since end of May benefitted. I can't complain just back from two weeks in Italy which was gorgeous and left just as heat was picking up.
Weather here for week not too bad sunshine and showers. Yesterday was miserable though wet and cold, don't mind the rain if it's warm but yesterday was like winter ❄️

headstone · 16/07/2023 16:07

I wouldn’t mind if the rest of the year wasn’t also cold and damp but unfortunately when it’s cold and damp in the only month when it could be nice it’s seriously depressing.

LlynTegid · 16/07/2023 16:12

I'm hoping this rain in the North West ends shortly. Don't want the Australians to retain the Men's Ashes because it rains over next weekend. If they win on the field, fair enough, but not because a game cannot be completed.

Though I think most of us would prefer 14 days of rain to the weather the Italians are experiencing now.

sadsack78 · 16/07/2023 16:13

I'm in SE Scotland. Had weeks of rain and thunderstorms here, and more to come.

Having said that, the garden is looking 1000x better than it did for a few weeks during May and June. At one point our lawn was pretty brown.

And the heat is really awful for some of my family members who find it exacerbates their chronic illnesses, so the cool weather is better for them.

I do feel for people who are having to keep their kids occupied indoors though. Not much of a summer holiday, especially for those who can't afford to travel this year.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 16/07/2023 16:20

I think YABU as you're in the NW. It rains a LOT in the NW.

Although we once went to the Lake District at Easter and got sunburnt.

I'm in East anglia and we really need some rain. We have to plant drought tolerant plants. Today is perfect for me - low 20s, not too sunny but warm enough for shorts and vest top.
