Would you let a 6y/o see Barbie?

44PumpLane · 16/07/2023 09:42

I'm in two minds about this- kids have been invited to see Barbie the movie but it's rated 12A because of moderate sexual innuendo, brief harassment, catcalling and implied strong language (including bleeped out motherf*er).

Supposedly it has the words bitch, crap, God, hell and damn in.

What would you do? We wouldn't typically let the kids see anything with this sort of language but then it would mean missing out on someone's birthday party.

There is no chance of us seeing it before the girls as we would have to accept or decline the invite today.

I think the swearing would go over the heads of mine, but I definitely know it wouldn't others so they then might chat about it or discuss it afterwards.

Am I being too precious about it all?

YABU- let them go see it

YANBU- yeah I probably wouldn't let a 6 year old see it or I'd want to see it myself first to judge.

My 6 and 9 year olds are 100% going. It looks brilliant. Actually a film we can watch together and I’ll probably find funnier than them

I think its because its a paradoy i(s that the word ) so its more of a filmed aimed at older girls/women who played with Barbie.

Parody. I'm looking forward to it despite never playing with Barbie.

I was an Action Man girl!

I dont think theyre being unreasonable that a massive pink and glittery franchise isnt appropriate for children could be disappointing for them (and I dont agree children should be seeing it)

So pink and glittery is only for kids?

Did I say that?

KnittedCardi · 17/07/2023 14:42

Stick to the daytime viewings if you want to take your youngsters. The later viewings are definitely going to be packed with twenty somethings, many dressed up, and in big groups. DD is going with a group, at their local cinema, which is a "Popcorn and Prosecco" showing. Very much the demographic aimed at.

It's not a movie designed for children it's for adults who grew up playing with Barbie and honestly a group of 6 year olds are likely to be bored out of their minds not least because it's 2 hours long.

Having seen the trailer, it didn't even occur to me that anyone would think it was a children's film, especially for such a young age group. They will be SOOO bored, it's not just the sexual innuendoes that will go over their heads, but the whole film. Imagine the fun, a whole group of 6 year olds sitting bored in a cinema for 2 hours.

I'll watch it when word gets round that it's not for little kids

WildUnchartedWaters · 17/07/2023 14:41

Yeah actually…you did.

You said they are disappointed a pink and glittery franchise isn’t for them.

And they are.

Does that equate to saying only kids can like pink and glitter?

No. But we could of course go on this tedious non point for several more posts it you like.

Every child is different and most things go over there heads but with that being said most cinemas won't let them in if they are under the age limit 12A means 12 year old accompanied by an adult and considering the barbie movie is a theatre only release then id say you should maybe point out that they most likely wouldn't get in 🤷‍♀️

No, it means 'advisory'. As long as they are with an adult they will be allowed in.

Yeah why not…I’m quite enjoying myself actually.

I can't remember, but was there this discussion when all the batman and joker movies came out? To my understanding kids still play with those dolls and watch the kids cartoon versions?

There was an outcry when Spider-Man was released as a 12, yet toys and merchandise aimed at children who were not able to watch it as not allowed in the cinema. I think that led to the 12A and parental discretion category.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 17/07/2023 15:01

We're taking our kids. A film we will all enjoy. Really looking forward to it.

Daytime. We won't be alone so if kids in a cinema aren't your thing then defo go to a later viewing!

Everyone's getting so het up about this!

Just each family do them and maybe stop judging everyone else.

Its really not crack cocaine...

Dd8 wants to see it but the trailer where she picks high heels over Birkenstocks annoyed me. I know it's supposed to be a joke and adults get that but all my dd8 will see is that high heels that distort her body are the go to fashion item.

Lol. But this is Barbieland and high heels are the symbol of Barbieland. If she's not going to get that, or you have concerns, maybe wait until she's older?

Anyone else think its a bit strange that there is a Barbie movie thats not aimed at the main demographic of the children who plays with the toy?
I mean, surely a 6 year old is peak Barbie age?

They’re made for us. The people who played with Barbie growing up. To capitalise on the nostalgia, and hope we bring along our kids if we have any.

While some children may still play with Barbie, it’s nothing on the scale like it was in the 80s and 90s when I was growing up.

Im a nanny and none of the girls I’ve looked after in my career have even had Barbies.
Greta Gerwig doesn’t direct children’s movies.

Some of the posts on here remind me of the outrage when the Dark Knight film was released and people took their children because, hey Batman based films are for kids right? Then got all upset because their intelligent, well adjusted ,sophisticated kids had nightmares about pencils being pushed in eyes.

Dark Knight was a 12a according to IMDB.

Or Life of Pi where fortunately, the kids were only bored

PaterPower · 17/07/2023 15:33

Can you not miss the cinema bit and take your kids over to the party (wherever that’s being held) afterwards?

If you don’t want to look like the uncool mum say something like “the kids really want to come to the party after, but we’ve got a clash for the first hour or two” or similar.

commonground · 17/07/2023 17:02

It's interesting because I am a 70s Barbie girl and I just don't remember her being so pink. She was mainly hot pants and tie-die and I'm sure her dream house was more yellows and greens. So I'm hoping if this is indeed a film aimed at the nostalgia audience, we get some of that. I am sure she has got pinker over the decades.

No. It’s a 12A and she is 6. Maybe if she was 10+, but 6…..no.

Exactly this. Its a 12 for a reason.

Excited101 · 17/07/2023 19:03

There seems to be a frightening amount of people on here who think the only difference between a kids film and an adults film, is swear words and a bit of sexual innuendo! I’m assuming it’s the same people who genuinely enjoy Bluey and Peppa Pig…

It’s clearly an adult film, young kids will spend about 80% of it confused, bored and disappointed. Probably even 10-12 year olds won’t get a huge amount from it but that’s difficult to say without seeing it, just the vibe they seem to be going for the with cast, marketing and director.

no, it doesn’t need to be for kids, because it’s made for adults… hardly rocket science.

In fairness, Life of Pi is boring at any age Grin

Kids being bored isn't really the end of the world though. Hardly 'frightening'

Bunnycat101 · 17/07/2023 19:51

It’s a bit of a weird one as the advertising is very appealing to small children. My daughter saw loads of barbie adverts in London and even a Barbie taxi. She will forget about it soon enough and won’t nag to go. A party would have been a much harder thing to say no to. I have to say though the party mum is brave. I wouldn’t fancy a cinema with 6yos as the risk of some of them freaking out or just being annoying is a bit too high for my liking.

The marketing is all over the place, the cast have said it’s for everyone (even when directly asked if it was for kids), and the director certainly isn’t confined to just making films for adults. Even Gosling said that his young daughters were on set.

I won’t be taking DD after the BBFC’s decision, but let’s not pretend that it’s clearly “made for adults” when the people making and promoting it were publicly clueless.
