Would you let a 6y/o see Barbie?

I'm in two minds about this- kids have been invited to see Barbie the movie but it's rated 12A because of moderate sexual innuendo, brief harassment, catcalling and implied strong language (including bleeped out motherf*er).

Supposedly it has the words bitch, crap, God, hell and damn in.

What would you do? We wouldn't typically let the kids see anything with this sort of language but then it would mean missing out on someone's birthday party.

There is no chance of us seeing it before the girls as we would have to accept or decline the invite today.

I think the swearing would go over the heads of mine, but I definitely know it wouldn't others so they then might chat about it or discuss it afterwards.

Am I being too precious about it all?

YABU- let them go see it

YANBU- yeah I probably wouldn't let a 6 year old see it or I'd want to see it myself first to judge.

Ooh lovely! Thank you. I love Mark Kermode.

I only downloaded it because The Archers Omnibus wasn't available when it normally is (I go for a long run late Sunday morning and usually catch up with The Archers then).
The people on yesterday's show were so articulate and knowledgeable.

So I should go to a later evening viewing so there won't be small children watching a movie that's not aimed at them?

Unfortunately it seems the only way to ensure that your screening isn't full of 6yos who will be bored and restless when they realise it isn't aimed at them is to go as late as possible in the hopes it's past their bedtime.

That's what I'm doing - Oppenheimer in the afternoon (since nobody is taking their 6yo to that), dinner then Barbie in the evening showing with teen DD and our friends in the hope that there will be no small kids due to the timing of the showing.

Some have said that they are taking their 4yo to see it. So 6 seems to be the mature audience. Seems like me and my girlfriends will be having dinner and wine and then the cinema. There seems to be a 9pm showing at the local cinema.

You might like his podcast with Simon Mayo, too. They used to be on 5 Live on Friday afternoons but left the BBC about a year ago.

I was a Sindy girl so I won't be going to watch it <huffs>

I had Sindy, my older sister had Pippa. My two younger sisters had Barbies.

My poor brother left home as soon as he could Grin

I think my older son enjoys that, and we've listened to it on long car journeys.
I do need to broaden my listening horizons.

I can't remember, but was there this discussion when all the batman and joker movies came out? To my understanding kids still play with those dolls and watch the kids cartoon versions?

Theyve been going for years though. This is the first of it's kind

Yes. There was a lot of controversy in 2008 when The Dark Knight was given a 12A as it was so dark and violent (although the violence was offscreen and implied). Equally, Joker was a 15 and the BBFC received a lot of complaints that it wasn't an 18.

I think the big difference with both was the marketing campaign. An awful lot of people have looked at the pink campaigns for Barbie (but no further) and assumed that it is aimed at little girls.

Barbie is a decades old institution. There are tons of barbie movies and shows aimed at kids. This is aimed at people who used to play with barbies and have the critical thinking skills and can see the nostalgia and problems with the toy.

So I should go to a later evening viewing so there won't be small children watching a movie that's not aimed at them?

Perhaps you could ring the cinema and ensure there wont be any, otherwise your evening will be totally spoiled 😳

This. Both The Dark Knight and The Joker had marketing campaigns that clearly pitched them as ‘darker and edgier’ than
previous Batman films.

You can watch it at 22.40 at my local cinemas

Ultraviolet85 · 17/07/2023 12:47

I voted yanbu because personally I don’t think a 6 year old would get the movie and it would be a waste of money. My 5 yo loves barbie but I’ll be sticking to the animated versions until she’s much older.

WildUnchartedWaters · 17/07/2023 13:00

4 is utterly ridiculous.

I know a year 1 teacher who says it's definitely not a film for children so no I wouldn't take that age.

Did they go to the premier?

NewCracker · 17/07/2023 13:34

Diddykong · 16/07/2023 12:52

Dd8 wants to see it but the trailer where she picks high heels over Birkenstocks annoyed me. I know it's supposed to be a joke and adults get that but all my dd8 will see is that high heels that distort her body are the go to fashion item.

Finally, this took far too long. I've been waiting for someone to point out the main reason why this movie is not for children....it objectifies women, gives children impossible beauty standards to live up to. That's why it's dangerous for young girls, not the foul language or innuendos.

Oh I remember that. My DS was 9 at the time - played with Batman etc, but there was no way I was taking him to see The Dark Knight.
Same with the Hulk. Lunch boxes, pencil cases etc - yet the film was not at all suitable for young children.

You need to read the reviews of the film.

Blarn · 17/07/2023 13:41

Isn't it about Barbie having an extensential crisis over what her role in life is, along with Ken who is nothing without Barbie just 'and Ken'? Nevermind the return of the very obscure Allan! I'm not sure its for young children or even
marketed as such.

ThanksItHasPockets · 17/07/2023 13:44

Probably the best historical example of a similar situation is Gremlins, for those old enough to remember 1984. Back then films were released in the USA months before the UK, so between the July USA release and the UK December release there was masses of cute fluffy Mogwai merchandise in the shops in the run-up to Christmas. It was quite a shock to everyone when the film eventually came out and families realised that it was a 15-certificate comedy horror film. There were so many complaints in the USA that it was the main reason (along with Temple of Doom) for the creation of the PG-13 rating.

CoffeeMama1 · 17/07/2023 13:44

Absolutely not, it is NOT a kids movie.

No, the movie explores all these themes in an adult way. It's made by a serious, feminist film-maker. That's exactly why it's not suitable for children.

Scottsy200 · 17/07/2023 14:01

This post is peak Mumsnet entitlement purely because little Suella or Tarquinius will be unable to watch a film that absolutely should have been made specifically for them. Bloody hilarious, there’s a little thing called artistic licence you know and that’s what they’ve used with this film, I’d be having a word with the parents of the birthday party and double checking they actually know what this film is about in all honesty

MamaMcW · 17/07/2023 14:29

Every child is different and most things go over there heads but with that being said most cinemas won't let them in if they are under the age limit 12A means 12 year old accompanied by an adult and considering the barbie movie is a theatre only release then id say you should maybe point out that they most likely wouldn't get in 🤷‍♀️

Can you imagine the mums on here if say Bad Santa came out now.

”oh but it says Santa in the title, how can they make a movie about Santa that isn’t for kids”

😆

I dont think theyre being unreasonable that a massive pink and glittery franchise isnt appropriate for children could be disappointing for them (and I dont agree children should be seeing it)
