Would you let a 6y/o see Barbie?

I'm in two minds about this- kids have been invited to see Barbie the movie but it's rated 12A because of moderate sexual innuendo, brief harassment, catcalling and implied strong language (including bleeped out motherf*er).

Supposedly it has the words bitch, crap, God, hell and damn in.

What would you do? We wouldn't typically let the kids see anything with this sort of language but then it would mean missing out on someone's birthday party.

There is no chance of us seeing it before the girls as we would have to accept or decline the invite today.

I think the swearing would go over the heads of mine, but I definitely know it wouldn't others so they then might chat about it or discuss it afterwards.

Am I being too precious about it all?

YABU- let them go see it

YANBU- yeah I probably wouldn't let a 6 year old see it or I'd want to see it myself first to judge.

I have been thinking about this today for my 6 yr old and haven't made a decision yet!

P0llyP0cket · 16/07/2023 10:15

I’m taking my 7yo. Most of it will go
over her head.

Greenshake · 16/07/2023 10:16

No. It’s a 12A and she is 6. Maybe if she was 10+, but 6…..no.

23Elfie · 16/07/2023 10:24

I'm taking my 9 year old and almost 11 year old niece - was a bit ermmm about the 9 year old to start with but to be honest she's heard swear words before and any sexual references she won't understand anyway

Himawarigirl · 16/07/2023 10:29

I’m taking my 10 yr old but probably wouldn’t take younger. If you can, wait until it’s out and read common sense media’s review that answers questions like this for parents. Their site says they won’t have a full review up until the movie is released on Friday.

Nappyvalley15 · 16/07/2023 10:32

No.
It's not aimed at that age group.

TheBestUsernamesAreGone · 16/07/2023 10:34

I know a year 1 teacher who says it's definitely not a film for children so no I wouldn't take that age.

whoruntheworldgirls · 16/07/2023 10:34

Would they even be allowed in the cinema? A few of us are trying to decide for our 7yr olds.

WestOfWestminster · 16/07/2023 10:35

Anyone else think its a bit strange that there is a Barbie movie thats not aimed at the main demographic of the children who plays with the toy?
I mean, surely a 6 year old is peak Barbie age?

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 16/07/2023 10:40

You can take any age child to see a 12, as l9ng as theyre with an adult.

Whether you should is another matter...

We have a 6 and a 7 year old who are really looking forward to seeing it and I was surprised its a 12.

Will wait to see what reviews say nearer the time before booking.

Doesn't make any sense, should be a film aimed at children.

Yes! I find it absolutely bizarre that they have made this apparently amazing Barbie movie but include inappropriate stuff. Why???? My daughters love Barbie but I won't be letting them watch it.

It really bothers me that they have taken this away from the kids.

megacat · 16/07/2023 10:47

The film has been made for adults who played with Barbie as a kid. It is not a kids film.

LizBennet · 16/07/2023 10:48

Not at 6, but I don’t think I could bear sitting through it myself either.

44PumpLane · 16/07/2023 10:50

I think what I'm struggling with is that I hate the thought of them missing out on a birthday party, I think the sexual innuendo stuff will completely go over their heads as they are still young enough, but for me it's the language that I'm worried about more than anything.

I agree that it's so frustrating that this has a 12A rating. I look at stuff like Bluey and Hey Duggee and they are so clever and so funny, small kids love it, adults love it, and with the tiniest bit of a tweak surely they could have just got a PG rating!!

I get that it's for the adults who played with Barbies, but it's no surprise that legions of small kids would want to see real life Barbie too. Grr!!!

What age is the birthday child?

I think its because its a paradoy i(s that the word ) so its more of a filmed aimed at older girls/women who played with Barbie.

44PumpLane · 16/07/2023 10:55

Mine are probably the oldest who have been invited!

BringOnSummerHolidays · 16/07/2023 10:55

This is an adult movie aiming at those of us with Barbies growing up. It’s not a kids movie.

Mrsjayy · 16/07/2023 10:55

But yes they should have made it accessible for younger girls.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 16/07/2023 10:56

I probably would (havdnt Seen it yet though) but I'd have a chat about there being grown ups in the film using bad words that are not ok etc- use it as a learning opportunity

YourNameGoesHere · 16/07/2023 10:56

It's not a movie designed for children it's for adults who grew up playing with Barbie and honestly a group of 6 year olds are likely to be bored out of their minds not least because it's 2 hours long.

LunaDeet · 16/07/2023 10:57

I was surprised too that it's not for kids - I'm not taking my 7 year old.

monpetitlapin · 16/07/2023 10:58

Yes it's a shame, it's lazy writing if they can't pull this off without using offensive language, too-obvious innuendo etc. They should have brought in the writers of FairlyOddParents, they were really good at appealing to children and adults while being hilarious but utterly irreverent. The writers of Bluey and Peppa Pig do a bang-up job, too. But then I think the casting was utterly burikko as well.

Workquestion11 · 16/07/2023 10:59

My daughter is 6 and a half, utterly obsessed with barbie and I'd consider myself quite lax towards most films but imo this isn't a kids movie. Although most of it would go over her head, I won't be taking her to see it
