To think GB News isn't a real news channel?

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/07/2023 02:26

Because it's mostly comedians and failed/ failing politicians chatting shit?

It's not news, it's something else.

As far as I'm concerned there can be political programming from any ideological viewpoint. People should be able to put their views out there and have them robustly challenged.

My gripe with GB News is that is it's not a news channel, has designed itself to get round meeting the requirements of a news channel, but then in many ways markets itself as a news channel. It does so because it taps into the political disillusioned element of British society and the people who feel a desperate need to feel someone's on their side against 'the establishment'.

What these viewers fail to realise is that GB News is the establishment. It's just doing what a certain group of UKIPpers, right wing of the conservative party and hard line brexiteers have been doing for years: aiming to move the overton window to advance their interests.

In my experience you get a handful of people who'll, quite rationally, say that GB News isn't a news channel but they've found some perspectives on certain issues interesting, but they are a minority.

What you get far more of is people saying GB News is news, just the woke, left wing sheeple can't handle the truth, there's a huge media conspiracy against the talking heads on GB News, something something BBC, Guardian etc. It would be interesting to see how many other conspiracy theories people like that cling to.

Most people I know across the political spectrum don't regard GB News as news.

I don't like tinned tomatoes, they give me heartburn.

I think I'll start a thread about that, so all the tomato-haters and I can sit in an echo chamber and see who can say the worst, most insulting things about tinned tomatoes. 🙄

False analogy of the week.

It's not a matter of taste. Also behold the raging irony of someone talking about an echo chamber in relation to people being opposed to GB "news".

TheLeavesAreTurningBrown · 29/10/2023 08:37

It was mentioned on here so I took a look.
I happened to turn it on with a lady absolutely lampooning Jacob Rees mogg.. She was skewering him and it was his slot on the show.

Then I saw another debate again where the guests really went for it. Not nasty of course but very honest and I found that refreshing.
It's like a magazine style show and because they say what they want obviously within reason I enjoyed it.

They have far more debate and different views than other channels.

CampsieGlamper · 29/10/2023 08:56

Does gbnews have a "let's look at disabled people, dying TV presenters " feature that BBC breakfast has?

Clavinova · 29/10/2023 10:15

It is not a news channel as it is light on facts, balance and moderation. It has comedic, incorrect and biased opinion that is skewed to present a single unpleasant world view masquerading as news for the hard of thinking, for people who think the ‘Daily Heil’ is factual and not a hate spewing comic book

Somewhat ironic, since only this morning, you have been spreading false and malicious gossip about Boris Johnson and his ex-wife's cancer diagnosis (Ms Wheeler was diagnosed with cancer the year after they separated - and not according to your false facts). Where do you get your 'news' from? Random people on social media?

I haven't watched GB News (apart from one or two clips) so I don't have an informed opinion on the channel's content.

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/10/2023 11:12

I watch it and @MadeleineMummy has summed it up well.

What was incorrect?

that Boris Johnson stated to his wife, when she was undergoing chemotherapy, that he was not having an affair. It was reported by the other woman (let’s call her PW) that this was true and she was having an affair with Boris. His wife also stated that Boris also vehemently denied having an affair while she was undergoing treatment. Boris helped his friend Darius Guppy to get the address of a reporter who he wanted to beat up. He has lied to the Queen, to government and the country.

Tell me Nadine, why am I incorrect? or do I have to read your book about the greatest PM in living memory?

Eleganz · 29/10/2023 13:22

Absolutely tabloid "news" full of bias, light on facts and with a string of shady characters as presenters (who seem to have to be changed out regularly when their behaviour even goes below the limited editorial standards of GBNews).

What they have shown us though is that ofcom is a totally gutless regulator in this area presiding over easily bypassed regulation to allow GBNews to be Schrödinger's news channel - simultaneously both news (for the purposes of its target audience) and not news (for the purposes of regulation).

That's my objection to the whole thing

I couldn't care less that they have figureheads who I think hold disgusting political views.
I do care that they're being allowed to misrepresent themselves as being news.

Several points:
Marina Wheeler was diagnosed with cancer in May 2019 ('cancer free' August 2019) - no mention of her undergoing chemotherapy;

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2019/aug/11/marina-wheeler-tells-of-cervical-cancer-diagnosis-boris-johnson

Marina Wheeler had already obtained a decree-nisi in divorce proceedings (on or before 18 Feb 2019) when she was diagnosed with cancer;

Johnson and Wheeler announced that they had separated, and were going through the divorce process, in September 2018.

18 Feb 2020 - Judge Gibbons gave Wheeler the go-ahead to apply for decree absolute, a divorce decree which will end the marriage “out of time”. Rules say applications for a decree absolute must be made within 12 months of the granting on an initial divorce decree, a decree nisi.

You're correct

It was only a plot where Johnson would supply Guppy with the address of a reporter so the reporter would be beaten up.

'A couple of black eyes': Johnson and the plot to attack a reporter | Politics | The Guardian

“He went quite a way along the line of plotting to get me beat up. He didn’t dismiss it from what I gather … From reading the transcript, he was well prepared to help Guppy find my address and for Guppy to then get me assaulted.”
On the taped call, Guppy tells Johnson he wants to scare Collier by getting heavies to give him “a couple of black eyes” and a “cracked rib”. Appearing to indicate he is happy to help supply Collier’s address, Johnson is heard saying at the end of the call: “OK, Darry, I said I’ll do it. I’ll do it, don’t worry.”

In the meantime. John Cleese seems surprised that Johnson, a known liar is going on GB News and Neil Oliver, who has changed a bit since doing Coast, really does not want Johnson being there. Something to do with Covid and vaccines apparently.

Edited

OK Nadine. I apologise for plotting against the the greatest PM this country has ever known. He is totally vindicated.

I apologise profusely for the incorrect timeline, he had affairs when his wife did not have cancer.

So you are saying the article in the Guardian is wrong?

What do you think happened with Guppy, Johnson and the journalist?

How can my link be irrelevant - I linked to GB News!

What do you think happened with Guppy, Johnson and the journalist?

Well, according to Guppy;
"As we all know, Mr Johnson never provided me with any address and it is perfectly clear from the tape recording in question that he was simply placating a friend he considered to be letting off steam. But while this may rightly exonerate the Mayor of London, my own line has always been somewhat different – and consistent: my only regret being that I was never able to finish the job."

So she used the internet for research? Hanging is too good for her, she needs to be hung, drawn and quartered. Bring back capital punishment, I say.

Boris is such a saint and he is more Winn’s against than sinning. Even Jesus did not have to put up with such criticism.

Clavinova · 29/10/2023 19:54

So she used the internet for research?

The Shadow Chancellor's new book, The Women Who Made Modern Economics, was engulfed in controversy today, after claims that she plagiarised sections of the book and had lifted sections entirely from Wikipedia.

The book included reproduced material from online blogs, Wikipedia, The Guardian and a report foreword by Labour MP Hilary Benn without acknowledging the sources.

More than 20 examples were spotted by the Financial Times.
