Because it's mostly comedians and failed/ failing politicians chatting shit?

It's not news, it's something else.

All this constant faux outrage about news sources, discussion shows etc. is so tedious and patronising. The usual posters congratulating themselves on their intellectual and moral superiority. There are worthwhile aspects to GBN as there are with most things. They seem able to give young reporters a chance for example, whose Daddy didn't have a column in The Times or whose Mummy wasn't a piss poor Home Secretary, and for that should be commended. I personally like to read and listen to a differing range of opinions, because that is how we grow and learn together as a society

Usou · 14/07/2023 09:02

Well said @Blackbyrd .

Appalonia · 14/07/2023 09:07

Andrew Doyle on Free Speech Nation on Sunday evenings is one of the best things on TV IMO!

Vinvertebrate · 14/07/2023 09:10

It’s called GBeebies in this house so YABU not to call it that.

AxolotlOnions · 14/07/2023 09:12

Isn't it officially classed as entertainment as it's not fact based enough to qualify as news?

gogomoto · 14/07/2023 09:19

It's a topical opinion channel (putting it politely) with stated political stance. I did watch it briefly because it's wrong to criticise a channel you haven't seen due to heresay and it is as bad as the heresay! Yes failed politicians, other personalities etc spouting of to editorial guidelines rather than presenting all the facts. Pretty disappointing that Michael portillo was lured to them, I like his train shows.

gogomoto · 14/07/2023 09:26

I believe technically it's an entertainment channel because in the U.K. there's rules of impartiality for news (see sky news for a good example of how a channel can be hands off from its overlords and keep neutral ish (yes everyone can waiver at times). The fact the bbc for instance gets accused of being both left and right wing is a good sign!

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 14/07/2023 09:28

Middlelanehogger · 14/07/2023 07:58

Newsflash @Thebestwaytoscareatory right-wing people are allowed opinions on current affairs too ;)

Did I say they weren't? The problem with echo chambers are they entrench views. And far too many people, left and right, are only interested in hearing things that conform to their bias.

The main difference between the two sides though, is that one side tries stir up discontent and anger that is directed at people in positions of power, while the other attempts to direct it toward vulnerable groups.

Uncontollablycryinggirl · 14/07/2023 09:36

I think you have raised a really important issue here OP. I think it’s incredibly hard to get a good, non-biased, fact based source of news. I read the Guardian, independent, daily mail and BBC to get news. The independent is fairly unbiased but you don’t get much depth. You get froth with The Guardian but obviously left bias. BBC is fairly unbiased but a little tight leaning now and very shallow. Daily Mail is not news at all. It’s hard to find the really key issues that are important to us - often not covered at all.

I think it’s a real problem.

I will defend GB News on the basis of Andrew Doyle’s programme. Also GB News is the only place that will platform women with a particular view and give them a fair hearing.

Yep

The BBC has an editorial line anyway on many programmes. Its licence fee means it survives no matter but without that I doubt it would survive, or no where near to same extent.

It’s a cushy position, protected from having to face market choices

Superpinkflowerpower · 14/07/2023 10:03

GB news is brilliant, there is a total mixed bag. Some presenters are great others I will switch off for and they do allow both sides of the argument.

To say its not news is pathetic to be honest.

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/07/2023 13:15

I do wish posters wouldn't make shit up about me. There's nothing convoluted or contrived about my posts. There is no outrage, faux or genuine and I have already, repeatedly said I watch GB News and enjoy it.

There seem to be a lot of defensiveness and intolerance of other viewpoints from the GB News fans here.

Are you kidding? GBN doesn't promote young, unknown talent. They may not employ the children of politicians because they employ the actual politicians.

Arlene Foster is a dreadful presenter.

There seems to be a lot of defensiveness and intolerance of other viewpoints all over MN, so what's new ?🙄

It's in the same sort of programming as This Morning without the jolly bits

downthestrada · 15/07/2023 08:19

I've not watched much GB news to have an opinion on whether it's news or not. But this popped up on my Twitter feed.

Why? You have linked to two opinion pieces. I could link to a million opinion pieces in, say, The Guardian that I find ludicrous - if that is your objection.

A quick google shows Michael Booker was the Sunday Express editor, and also previously worked for the Daily Express and Daily Star Sunday. Was he a journalist then? Was what he wrote for them journalism?

It’s not the BBC (which has its own limitations) but I don’t think it’s that materially different to say CNN.

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/07/2023 00:42

I've linked to the first because it's an overtly personal campaign, from a GB News daily presenter dressed up as news.

And the second because it promotes a very dangerous message dressed up as news, nationalism and fighting against oppression.

Thank you @downthestrada. That's really informative, very interesting and a bit bewildering as to the point of Ofcom.

It is not a news channel as it is light on facts, balance and moderation. It has comedic, incorrect and biased opinion that is skewed to present a single unpleasant world view masquerading as news for the hard of thinking, for people who think the ‘Daily Heil’ is factual and not a hate spewing comic book. The fact that they have hired the Liar and chancer in Chief as a presenter shows how far into the gutter they have become. I used to think that Britain was a land of moderation, fairness and decency but I have found that my views have been very naive and we are just as mad as everyone else.

The fact that Ofcom has not shut it down shows how much the government has reduced standards and ethics in the country for their ideology of letting the unfettered free-market decide.

It is only a matter of time before we become as divided as the US. Where you have ‘fair and balanced’ infotainment channels like Fox spouting alternative reality to people who don’t have the ability to make their own mind up. We have people who view GB News and believe their alternate facts as gospel makes me despair for how we are heading.

Droppit · 29/10/2023 07:42

I would say it's a news discussion channel. The thing I find is that quite often they have panellists with the same views and not enough variety of opinion.

The panellists are very hit and miss too and some are completely unwatchable (the royal commentators?). I cannot understand why they moan about Harry and Megan being attention-seeking and yet cannot wait to discuss their every move.

What do you search out this thread from 4mths ago .
Your assessment clearly shows you don't watch the channel .
GB news is for anyone sad this country has gone down the toilet and has nowhere else to voice it . And FWIW this country is very already very divided long before GB news came along .
