Top news stories

I see everywhere people wondering why certain stories trump others in news eg "why is this news when X is getting less coverage?"

Isn't it algorithms that determine what is the lead story? More clicks = more coverage = more content created

Maybe it's just a rhetorical question and I've misunderstood what posters mean and they mean why do the public seem more interested in X than X? But then doesn't it feed both ways bc you're more likely to have heard about some stories Vs others so perhaps some people would be far more interested in something else but they just haven't heard about it yet?

Some people just look for gossip and the most sensational stuff.

Whatever generates the most clicks gets pushed to the top. More clicks = more advertising revenue

I mean obviously some do... but for something to become a top story, Dont enough folk have to click on it to keep it there? So (I'm assuming) top stories are public interest driven vs a newspaper going yeah we will cover that story more than that one bc we think people should know that more?
