What to wear……

I want to cancel as I feel fat and ugly. Im size 18, huge tummy. Been invited to a night out with the mums at my sons school. He’s in year 6 and it’s to celebrate kids leaving primary. If I’m honest I don’t know the mums very well as he started in year 5 due to the house move. I don’t ever go out, if I’m honest I have no idea what people even wear now on a night out!

It’s in a restarant/bar in our local area never been there before. I was thinking a dress but I feel fatter in a dress (I’ve gone and bought 2 dresses and both look awful sales assistant helped me and I looked okay there). I feel they’re too “dressy”. Im thinking black trousers with a top. Will this be okay? I’ve got one cold shoulder top which doesn’t look bad or a 3/4 sleeve evening top. What would you wear? Please be kind I’m really stressing over this!

I'm sure others will be wearing a real mix from dresses to trousers and jumpsuits. I have large tummy too so would go for trousers with pretty top. The other Mums will be more interested in you and having a friendly laugh than what you are wearing or your size. I'm sure you will look lovely, just go for it and have a great time!

@Sprite1008 thank you. Do u think jeans will also be okay? I feel better in jeans.

I see such a mix of outfits on nights out from jeans, flat shoes, dresses, heels jumpsuits. Wear what you feel comfortable in and you'll enjoy it much better. Have a lovely time

Jeans will be absolutely fine!! I always think hair and makeup matter more than clothes so maybe concentrate on feeling good about those (if you wear it, obviously don’t have to!) and you will feel confident no matter what you wear. Most importantly have a great night 🙂

I agree that jeans and a nice top will be fine, if that's what you feel comfy in! And I agree with PP - focus on hair, make up and maybe a slightly dressy bit of jewellery.

If it's a restaurant bar, chances are it will be smart casual, and I worry you'll feel really self conscious if you feel OTT in a glam dress.

I hope you have a fun evening!

This maybe treat yourself to a nice new top, a new lipstick or nice earrings and a blow dry and go with a big smile and enjoy.

I’m fatter than you by a significant margin.

  1. you are worthy of a fun night out and grieves no matter shape or size.
  2. my school mum friends and I (a trio of us are good friends) have the most different taste you could imagine - one lives in jeans, one looks like a French fashion spread, I look like a bag lady. No one cares. We drink, talk laugh.

I like tunic tops and linen trousers if I need to look reasonable. Decent hair and makeup go a long way too.

Have loads of fun 👌🏾

Jeans might be too hot

Black trousers and 3/4 sleeve top

The last few years, and even more since the lockdowns, many people are far more relaxed about what they wear and so you’ll see a real variety fro
jeans and a top to dressed to jumpsuits to more formal.

iIf jeans and a nice top is what you feel comfortable in them wear that. Unless you turn up looking like a scarecrow honestly no one will be judging. They’ll just be glad you made the effort to attend

Comedycook · 12/07/2023 19:53

Jeans are fine...dress it up with a really nice glam handbag and do your hair and make up. It will be fine

GlitterSquid · 12/07/2023 20:21

Batwing tops are very flattering?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/07/2023 22:00

Where are you off to ? A pub or casual restaurant then yes jeans will be fine.

Thank you so much everyone! It’s really difficult as I feel so low about myself plus I have social anxiety and do not know any of these mothers very well. Thank you for the advice and links of clothes I am looking through them all x
