Neighbours’ ‘temporary’ structure overhangs into our garden

Please tell me if IABU here.

We live in a row of terraces. Over a month ago our neighbours erected a square pagoda/marquee outside their kitchen. Obviously it’s not a permanent ‘built’ structure but it certainly looks like it’s here to stay for the summer.

It’s like the attached photo, but the roof of it overhangs the base. (I have tried to draw it in.)

The thing is that - you’ve guessed it - they’ve placed the vertical poles right against our fence and so the roof overhang comes into our garden. Which means, when it’s rainy, the rain runs off the ‘roof’ and right into our garden.

I think it’s cheeky, but I’m also menopausal and so lots of things give me the rage at the moment.

So I just wondered what the hive mind thought.

Also menopausal, I’d have shoved the structure over on its end by now Grin

Haven’t spoken to them, I guess that’s my AIBU - would I BU to mention it to them?

Good God, why one earth would it be unreasonable for one adult to say to another, "Are you aware the waters running onto my property?"

Even some of the fairy light bulbs have come over our side of the fence!

And you haven't yet contemplated cutting the bulbs off , crushing them to powder and lobbing them over the fence in a Bulbs Today , your balls next sort of sub-threat ?........................................................................

But it’s blatantly obvious if your roof extends into another persons space the run off will land there so OP shouldn’t need to point that out to the selfish gits

Some people are a bit stupid and need things pointing out to them. I wouldn't fall out with a neighbour, so a polite conversation pointing out the blindingly obvious can do no harm.

pictoosh · 12/07/2023 18:56

It wouldn't bother me.

bellac11 · 12/07/2023 21:05

They're not obliged to cut trees on their side OP, what did you mean?

Yeahyeahno · 12/07/2023 21:06

I wouldn’t assume it’s temporary. Our neighbours’ one has been up years. It’s illegal so just ask them to move it.

Berthatydfil · 12/07/2023 21:48

This is actually a legal nuisance. My parents neighbours changed the rainwater drain pipe off their garage roof so it run into my mums flowerbeds. It flooded the flower bed when it rained snd washed away the roots of some of the plants which then died.
They had to move it so it drained into their garden.
