Get real…

… get real is my dad’s favourite catchphrase and the older I get the more I seem to use it (mainly inside my head, despite sometimes really wanting to say it to a person). What are the things that make you want to say ‘get real’ to people that are total non issues that they get their tits in a twist about?

For me:

  • What ‘celebrities’ do - unless it’s illegal what’s it got to do with you?
  • Interactions with people working in hospitality/retail - unless they are downright rude then why get into a huff over a momentary transaction?
  • Wedding outrage - you didn’t invent weddings, lots of things in normal life don’t go to plan, do your best to have a fun day with the people you love and not tot up perceived infringements, it’s petty
  • Baby outrage - the world doesn’t need to feel the way you do about your kid, I have two goddaughters who I love to death, but they’re not perfect in the same way that I am not and no one is
  • Present outrage - a gift is given without the promise of reciprocation, maybe ask for a dictionary for your birthday if you don’t understand

I don’t understand where people get the energy from to be offended over minor ‘infractions’. Calm the fuck down.

Work outrage - I got shouted at today because I dared ask for help - how the fuck was I to know you changed your office is open time! Either put a sign up or tell people your lunch is between 1:15 and 1:45.

No common sense anywhere. If we all communicated better life would be better

Are you meaning to say people are making a mountain out of a molehill/feeding on drama? But that's people for you. Yes I see what you mean I'm a lot more stressed when I wind myself up about things but to be fair it can be nice to have a moan when everythings going wrong. It's a bit like writing in a diary but public/socialising.

To be honest though it's sort of what mumsnet is about and there are issues that matter as well. Can be nice to have a bit of understanding and sympathy from people
