To think that “because of covid” is now taking the piss?

24 hours before we are leaving for a stay in a holiday cottage, and this message has just popped up - “ because of the current situation with covid we are no longer providing bedding. Please bring your own pillows, duvets, linen and towels”.
This feels like a massive cop out now, and I’m really hacked off at having to sort it out at the last minute. I get that there are still plenty of covid cases around, but surely we’re done with this kind of measure?

Do you sleep with 3 pillows? Genuinely curious.

2 for each person, 2 in the king, one in the single

Nuevabegin · 10/07/2023 08:00

I run an Airbnb and that is total bs . I’d look at the original booking information and what is provided. I don’t think Airbnb is “shit” but like anything you can get total chancers . This is bad form . Tbh when we travel to France this is normal and drives me completely mad tbh , it annoys me so much to have to pay extras for bedding and sheets on top of the full cost of accommodation… I think it’s ridiculous tbh. I would contact the hosts and say that it’s unacceptable and you will contact Airbnb support (I actually find them very responsive and answer quickly).

A lot of hotels now don't offer housekeeping each day, you have to request it

A lot of changes made during covid have been kept up

Just pack some towels and bedding.

Well I reckon that even in my large car, I'd struggle to fit some quilts and covers and what 8 pillows, and about 18 towels plus everything else I take already.

Covid was some time ago now, the cottage owners have screwed up here.

Ah littlies. I just assumed it was only the two of you as you mentioned one duvet. I only sleep with one so was baffled at how you didn't have serious neck problems! Thanks 😊

VelvetLiesAndChickenPies · 10/07/2023 08:02

I also use public transport so this would really be a nightmare. Crazy situation how many things haven't returned to normal post covid.

Also curious

The poster says they would bring a king and a single so I am guessing three people so therefore two pillows each?

I may not have clean bedding, in the right sizes, at the last minute! When going away I often put ours in to wash and dry whilst away.

I may be travelling by public transport and not have the luggage space or ability to carry it.

This is something that should definitely be in the details, loud and clear, before booking. I would then know to avoid and not book.

mcdog · 10/07/2023 08:03

I would be furious if they come back and say it isn't a mistake. I would contact Airbnb straight away and ask that they investigate!

Some people need to be propped up.

VenusClapTrap · 10/07/2023 08:04

We had this recently and it pissed me off royally. We were already en route because it was part of a long road trip, so it was too late to bring any with us and we were in a remote area with nowhere to buy any. They grudgingly let us rent some of the linen they had stashed in their cupboards, at an exorbitant cost and on condition we washed and dried everything before we left. They said we couldn’t rent their towels for ‘hygiene reasons’ and that if we used them we’d have to buy them from them. There was other nonsense too. Really put me off AirBnB.

I agree, 100%. It's become an excuse to cut corners and cost on services everywhere.

If they were being honest they should probably say "because of Brexit" vbecause I imagine all these reductions in services are due to the scantity of cheap european labour.

As it happens I was in a hotel in quite a remote and generally not very diverse part of the UK last week and a lot of the staff appeared to be African (as in they were black and English was not their first language).

I had a wry smile about how this would sit with those who voted for Brexit 'because there was too much immigration these days' because it looks like someone somewhere is trying 'cheap non European labour' as a solution to a shortage of cheap European labour.

But on the OPs point, if this is not a mistake, they're definitely taking the piss, and it's a ridiculous requirement, especially with no notice, and many people won't even have sufficient spare bedding (we have 2 sets and quite often one is on the bed, and one is waiting to be washed) and even if they do, is it for the right size bed?

BarbaraofSeville · 10/07/2023 08:06

But I don't mind the lack of daily housekeeping in hotels, it seems so unnecessary and I always feel bad if I haven't tidied up so they can clean.

starfishmummy · 10/07/2023 08:07

I may not have clean bedding, in the right sizes, at the last minute!

Last time we were away there were two super-king beds and we just don't have any that size at home and don't know anyone who we could borrow from. We'd manage with smaller duvets but not sheets

No - DS, Dh and I. 2 each.

I would say we have a medium sized car.

There are only 2 of us now and the car is full to the brim. We usuallly take bikes so a lot of equipment is needed for that, we take a few different coats and boots, our usual clothes, other shoes, suitcases, OH has to take every gadget under the sun because says the wifi is never good enough, never enough plug sockets, telly never works etc et

So we wouldnt have space for bedding if we even wanted to. And I dont want to

rookiemere · 10/07/2023 08:11

It's not Airbnb doing this though- it's unscrupulous owners. Essentials should be covered in the listing- I checked one we stayed in last year and it lists bedding and towels. If that is included in the listing and they aren't providing it, it's a clear change of terms. If it doesn't include them well them caveat emptor.

I have very little patience for those owning second homes still allegedly worried so much about covid that they can't provide basic necessities. They have had plenty of time to sell up if it doesn't suit them any more.

butterpuffed · 10/07/2023 08:13

If it's not very old information sent in error, perhaps the previous occupant of your room was diagnosed with covid before they left .

Swrigh1234 · 10/07/2023 08:13

Most of what happened during Covid was nothing to do with Covid. Just an excuse for the government and then individuals to fleece the taxpayer.

JustDanceAddict · 10/07/2023 08:13

thats ridiculous! We are away in an Airbnb and have sheets and towels provided! This is the 2nd time since covid we’ve rented a cottage and both times we’ve had linens etc. very weird.

I did say a single too so I was confused! 😁

Squirrelsnut · 10/07/2023 08:14

That is lazy bullshit and I'd strongly request a partial refund. If in original listing- poor but acceptable. Last minute notification- fuck off!

I think the issue with Air B and B is that you don't have much in the way of protection from unscrupulous or just plain useless owners. It doesn't have to be their specific policy, it's the nature of the model.

My friend got really fucked over by late withdrawal of a booked Air B and B let and their customer service was shit, so I wouldn't use them at all now and certainly not for a family holiday.

At this point what's the point of going away.

Next they'll say being your own crockery. How ridiculous.

This is why I often don't holiday in the U.K. anymore. So many ridiculous requests that mean I may as well just stay at home.

Imagine coming home from holiday and having loads and loads of linen to wash in addition to normal laundry at home

I've never used them. Too many things have happened to friends, like booked cottage cancelled because there was a hen do wanting all 3 cottages, or cancellations then listings at higher prices because a gig has been announced.

I still enjoy a UK break, just go with the professionals.
