To find this insensitive in a COL crisis?

Someone I know on a 3 week holiday in America. Posting up to five updates a day on different outings, how much she has spent etc. Been going on about the holiday for months.
Aibu to think this is quite insensitive given that most people are struggling right now ?

OP posts:

Jesus, really?! Grow up OP!🙄

What is it with the vocal minority on mumsnet who insist everyone must be struggling or on low incomes of late? Is it really that had to comprehend that some people are financially secure and/or comfortable? It’s not a COL for everyone. We’re not struggling and I don’t know anyone in my social circle who is either. That’s my reality and I’m not going to apologise for it or caveat with how lucky we are blah blah blah. Shoot me. If someone wants to go on expensive holiday and post about it, so what? It’s a free country. Why should anyone give a hoot what some green eyed miserable so and so thinks. Haters always going to hate.

LuckyPeonies · 10/07/2023 00:49

I don’t really think it is insensitive, although reporting on spending is cringey. But posting five times a day while on holiday? To me, that is strange because we are usually out and about seeing new things and visiting the places we’ve put on the ‘must see’ list. So no inclination to post more than once a day, if that.

Because it's such a typical MN alarmist post - which also isn't true.

I enjoyed the randomness of it. Good effort, very funny. Also bonkers untrue in a slightly hysterical and paranoid fashion. Top marks.

FOJN · 10/07/2023 06:21

You can choose whether you read the posts but you would prefer this person did not post at all to avoid upsetting anyone who can't afford to spend like she does.

The world is not your personal safe space and someone having a holiday does not require a trigger warning.

Shoxfordian · 10/07/2023 06:51

Unfollow her if it bothers you op

StormShadow · 10/07/2023 07:06

A large part of social media is people showing off. If she's bragging about what she's spent then she's doing it wrong, mind, but that just means people are going to be slagging her off for being tacky.

User10486743 · 10/07/2023 07:15

It's a bit weird posting daily spends but I probably wouldn't bother to read it anyway

arethereanyleftatall · 10/07/2023 07:20

Lol Yabu - are you seriously suggesting people can't post holiday photos on social media any more?

ThickSkinnedSoWhat · 10/07/2023 07:28

I assume nobody is holding you at gunpoint to force you to look at these posts, so just don't. Hide them from your feed, delete them if you must. I'm not well off myself, but the world doesn't stop because you are jealous they are on holiday.

Zippedydodah · 10/07/2023 07:35

YABU and it makes you sound unpleasantly jealous.

Rewis · 10/07/2023 07:49

I guess it depends on how they present thr how much they've spent. If it's "look how cheap this is" or "look how insanely expensive that was...please be advised on your next trip" or a breakdown for educational purposes or "I just bought $500 worth of clothes. Lolzatron".

But people are allowed to enjoy themselves and the purpose of social media is to share about your life. Also, most are suffering? Is that really true?

PlatBilledDuckypuss · 10/07/2023 07:50

You have to stop believing everything you read in the Guardian.

helpsexdrought · 10/07/2023 07:51

It's a difficult one

I do completely get where you're coming from but she is allowed to post holiday pics. I feel the same sometimes though

PickledPurplePickle · 10/07/2023 07:53

YABU if you don’t like the updates pause them

StormShadow · 10/07/2023 07:58

Yep and it's weird, because I'd have said it was pretty well understood on here that there's a lot of inequality in our society. That some people have a lot more than others. But there seem to be threads most weeks about how there can't be a COL crisis because the OP saw packed pubs and restaurants, which is a different argument but stems from the exact same assumption.

Floogal · 10/07/2023 08:30

Don't know about insensitive, but excessive updating like that is certainly 'Molly Sugden's bridesmaid' . Can be tedious

BodegaSushi · 10/07/2023 09:11

No return OP, clearly just goady.

It's cringe no matter the state of the economy, but if it makes people feel bad then they're the ones that should maybe take a SM break.

so there's no cost of living crisis, it's all just a Guardian confection?

what a tedious little moron.

maddiemookins16mum · 10/07/2023 12:40

Step away from Fakebook.

lljkk · 10/07/2023 12:52

Something like 75% of people are owner-occupiers.
2/3 of owner-occupiers have no mortgage, they own outright.
A lot of the owner-occupiers who do have a mortgage, have very small mortgages.

I'd say most people are managing ok or well.

That stat leaves out private renters, who are probably the group being most fucked over. I completely agree that loads of people are fine though.

whoruntheworldgirls · 10/07/2023 13:26

We're off to California for a road trip in summer and will be posting about it, my friends/family have said they want to see what we're up to. Just like i love seeing their holiday photo's.
Never post about what we've spent though, that's odd.

Oh come on! The Guardian's been flogging this for all it is worth. Ever read "The Heat or Eat Diaries"? There's a new one out today.

Also, have you've no better response that vulgar abuse?
