Was just in a Co Op buying a few bits. DS negotiated with me that I'd buy him a Monster, and he'd drink half (they are such huge tins it drives me mad)....

... the man in co op would not sell it to me because I was going to give it to a child.

FFS. I'm an adult. He is my child. I can decide what he can and can't have. And caffeine is NOT illegal for children.

I'm also fully aware that lots of people will say I AM BU because no child should ever drink anything except fresh water, preferably from your local stream.... But I'm extremely annoyed. These rules are ridiculous.

By your reasoning, if your child whinged about it long enough and you gave in, it should be fine to buy him a cigar and a bottle of vodka.

There are all sorts of laws on rhe books to protect children from parents unwilling to parent. The monster drinks one is among them.

It's Sunday what co-op is open at this time on a Sunday

The one near me is open today til 10pm. They get a lot of business with the bigger shops shutting at 4pm or 5 pm.

Sushiandunagi · 09/07/2023 20:18

Geez… who made these rules! Next time you know you can’t give beer or crack to your child… 🤦🏻‍♀️

Ridiculous nanny state! Next thing they'll be banning the under 10s from vaping. Nonsense.

Isn't it due to the amount of caffeine in it? I agree with the shop. I'm amazed how many of my DC friends have Prime and they are 9. Mind you they also let them have mobile phones with Insta, Snapchat and TikTok so I'm not surprised.

Iirr there are different types of prime.
One type is basically coconut water flavoured.
The other is an energy drink.

adviceneeded1990 · 09/07/2023 20:24

Depends. If he’s 15, they are mental. If he’s 5, you might want to look at your own decisions. 😆

So you are amazed yet not surprised. Strange indeed.

Are you actually serious or being sarcastic?

Serious, no I know it’s bad cos they contain lots of sugar but it’s only occasionally!

BCCoach · 09/07/2023 20:31

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 09/07/2023 18:46

YABU, it’s no different than buying alcohol for minors!

The assistant was also legally responsible to ensure the law was followed as they themselves can be fined as well as the shop be fined.

There is no law in the U.K. preventing the sale of energy drinks to children. The government have said they want to ban it but have not done so yet. My child’s secondary school canteen will happily sell an espresso to a year 7 student by the way.

SayHi · 09/07/2023 20:32

Some parents are unable to make sensible decisions, so the government has to put rules in place to try and protect their children.

Don’t be annoyed at the shop or the government for trying to protect your child.

JusthereforXmas · 09/07/2023 20:35

I love that just from the first page nearly every comment is mentioning the sugar content... yous lot do know they make monster zero right?

I think this depends on age too... I honestly couldn't be upset if my 14 year old drank a monster but god help me if my 4 year old did (hes bloody hyper as it is).

TooOldForThisNonsense · 09/07/2023 20:36

Reugny · 09/07/2023 19:25

You are aware that chains have mystery shoppers?

So staff aren't going to risk their job because you stupidly discussed how much of an energy drink you were going to allow your son to drink you were about to purchase.

This

how come he has a taste for it anyway? Vile stuff.

Wtf? This is a windup surely. Who gives that to a 9 year old?!

Fightyouforthatpie · 09/07/2023 20:39

Kazzyhoward · 09/07/2023 19:42

The cashier is right - it's the law not to sell alcohol for children. Local authorities do spot checks/test purchases and if it turned out you were doing a council check, he'd probably lose his job and the shop fined.

Brilliant! Except there's nothing at all in the OP about alcohol.

Hawkins0001 · 09/07/2023 20:39

I drink them now and again depending on the price, overall I try to balance my drinks. That said I'm tea total most of the time

eatdrinkandbemerry · 09/07/2023 20:40

The Co op are crazy.
My partner wanted to buy 20 cigs and they refused because he had our daughter with him, she's 20 but does look about 16 but they still wouldn't serve him!

CapEBarra · 09/07/2023 20:40

Political correctness gone mad I tell you. Nothing my 6 year old likes better than settling down to watch the wrestling with a pint of Special Brew and 20 Benson and Hedges. On the weekend I’ll let him have a few Malibu and Cokes and a couple of lines of charlie if he’s managed to keep his room tidy.

Well, you've got to reward them, I say.
Never did us any harm.

FancyFanny · 09/07/2023 20:44

It's not against the law for minors to buy or drink energy drinks. It's just up to the retailer if they want to put their own rules in place. If you want to give your kid a sugary caffeine drink then I can't see why the shops should care. We need to let parents parent and stop babying everyone !

Leah5678 · 09/07/2023 20:46

Voted yabu not because I want to virtue signal about the health of your Ds but because of the sheer entitlement thinking the employee should risk losing their job over your choice of beverage 🙄 if you really want your Ds to have an energy drink just go to another shop and buy one without bringing ds.

WinniFinniHadog · 09/07/2023 20:47

I mean, I'm a "relaxed" parent. DS9 has been known to have the weakest shandy on earth, a thimble of light beer topped up with diet lemonade in a pint glass. Or on New year's Eve 1/6th of a flute with champagne topped up with orange juice.

So I'm hardly "perfect"

But, no way would I give a monster/red bull to a child, even diluted. The caffeine in them would have him crawling the ceiling for hours!! I couldn't be coping with that.

Fully aware I sound like a hypocrite right now, but at least the thimble of alcohol won't have him in a frenzy for hours. I shudder at the thought....

But the shop isn't allowed to sell them to under 16's and the shop knew you were going to supply it to a child, so same as alcohol really.

YukoandHiro · 09/07/2023 20:48

You are being totally unreasonable. Too young and that stuff can cause serious heart issues. Tbh it's really bad for adults!

Yeah it's not against the law but if it's against the shops policy the employee could lose their job, it's just not worth it for them personally so your Ds can be picky about his choice of beverage 🙄

BeeDavis · 09/07/2023 20:49

I cannot stand energy drinks. I don’t even like my husband drinking them and he’s 31 years old! 🤣 If you won’t look out for your child, who will?!
