Was just in a Co Op buying a few bits. DS negotiated with me that I'd buy him a Monster, and he'd drink half (they are such huge tins it drives me mad)....

... the man in co op would not sell it to me because I was going to give it to a child.

FFS. I'm an adult. He is my child. I can decide what he can and can't have. And caffeine is NOT illegal for children.

I'm also fully aware that lots of people will say I AM BU because no child should ever drink anything except fresh water, preferably from your local stream.... But I'm extremely annoyed. These rules are ridiculous.

It's Sunday what co-op is open at this time on a Sunday

😂 Christ. That’s your take away? Where do you live?

I live in a total parochial backwater and our tiny Co-op is open on a Sunday.

BunnyBettChetwynd · 09/07/2023 19:50

How can you expect him to drink that rubbish. Get the poor child a vodka to go with and some fags while you're at it.

GoodChat · 09/07/2023 19:51

Is it to drink while he has his half a spliff?

Annaisatwat · 09/07/2023 19:51

My ds used to badger me endlessly for monster energy drinks.

He never got one.

He’s an adult now and won’t go near them, thankfully.

Jeannie88 · 09/07/2023 19:54

Those drinks,.like red bull, are totally unnecessary unless possibly running a marathon! I hate them so much, kids come into school hyped up because they've been allowed to buy them on way or given by parents. A huge no, they don't need these, in fact they can cause fatal damage to underdeveloped organs due to high caffeine and sugar contents. Why would you want ypir child to drink these really? So dangerous and just unresponsible. We have a child with sen issues and if he had a taste of this and wanted it we would not allow him ever! You really need to stop this immediately. You're the parent, parent!

Xenia · 09/07/2023 19:54

I never heard of Monster so had to look it up.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 09/07/2023 19:54

Yeah course you did

Open 7am to 10pm here, on a Sunday, and in the Highlands too.

Jesus there should be some sort of test before people are allowed to have children? Why on earth would you give something like that to a child?

Exactly

lucylulululu · 09/07/2023 19:56

They have signs all over stating that this is store policy 🤷‍♀️ as soon as they know its being bought for a minor then it's a proxy sale and if they knowingly continued with the sale they would be personally liable. I doubt very much they would want to risk that for the sake of a stranger. Just buy a different drink or go somewhere else that doesn't have this policy if he absolutely must have it.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 09/07/2023 19:56

There was a thread exactly like this a few days ago.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 09/07/2023 19:57

I have no idea why people respond to threads like this seriously

Energy drinks have seen dc in hospital.

I know a teenage girl who was hospitalised with a fit brought on by consuming Monster.

The sales restrictions exist for a reason.

Jeannie88 · 09/07/2023 19:59

Also want to add once you see a 12 year old who has overdosed on these drinks as he thought it would be funny to see how many he could get away with during a school day and you have to call an ambulance, to be rushed into emergency care, a checkout worker is the least of your worries. Then of course to have the parent blame the school for allowing it, which isnt true. Get a grip really and educate yourself on them.

Nellynoowhoareyou · 09/07/2023 19:59

Wind-up, surely 🙈

isupposeitsverynice · 09/07/2023 20:00

co op opening hours depend on size of shop, sunday trading regulations apply to stores of a certain size, hence little co ops and tesco expresses are open later than main supermarkets

(i have nothing to add about the actual thread topic)

I agree with you OP, I was in the shop with DS8 and we agreed that he could have half a bottle of whisky for being so good that day but when we took it to the till, a snooping shop assistant grabbed the bottle out of my hand and said I couldn't buy it because I'd be giving it to my child. I told her it was none of her business, I was an adult and entitled to buy alcohol and if the shop didn't sell it to me they were BREAKING THE LAW.

The rules are ridiculous nowadays, you literally can't do anything.

Anyway, to really stick it to the Asda woman, I gave DS some paint thinner to drink instead. Don't worry I watered it down with Monster so it'd be a bit more palatable.

😄😄😄

It’s not illegal for children to buy high caffeine drinks. It’s just Co Op policy. Children can buy coffee in there.

Energy drinks have a vastly higher caffeine content than coffee

Slitheringheights · 09/07/2023 20:04

My partner and son 12, went to scotmid. Partner decided to buy a scratch card. Asked my son to pick one at the till. The shop assistant refused my partner the card as he says he was buying it for the child. He only asked my son to pick the lucky scratch card for Fecks sake lol

intergalacticplanetary · 09/07/2023 20:06

I saw a toddler in a pram drinking a can of Monster through a straw the other day. I was fucking mortified. Stuff should be banned full stop.

Viviennemary · 09/07/2023 20:07

I looked this up. Apparently it isnt illegal to sell cafeine drinks to children but retailers can use their own guidelines. I dont agree with the consumption of those cafeine loaded drinks even for adults far less children.

winterchills · 09/07/2023 20:09

Im with the cashier! She was doing her job and those kinds of drinks are not good for adults or children.

RightOnTheEdge · 09/07/2023 20:09

ShirleyPhallus · 09/07/2023 18:59

I wouldn’t bother with Monster, but my 9 year old likes half a bottle of Wkd every now and again.

Are you actually serious or being sarcastic?

TeenLifeMum · 09/07/2023 20:09

You’re absolutely right, it’s not the job of the coop staff to highlight your shit parenting… are you mostly upset because you know it’s poor and feel embarrassed?
