To Not Pay Hotel for a Problem they Caused?

Long story short, we were staying at a remote hotel overseas. Booking a stay with the hotel includes a return boat trip back to a town as that is the only way to reach it.

Unfortunately the boat broke down just before we were due to depart. It is not the hotel boat, but one of their friends who they use to make the trips with guests. This meant we had to stay an extra night before another local guy could take us in his boat. We left first thing and stayed in our previous and uncleaned room.

Hotel won’t write down that their boat broke down for our insurance because they are worried the insurance would claim against them.

But hotel are emailing us and messaging us via booking dot com asking us to book an extra night to pay them. They want us to pay £150.

aibu to not pay them?

The hotel arranged the boat and the boat broke down so you’ve had to stay another night in same room that hasn’t been cleaned yet. I would expect the hotel not to charge you unless they give you written confirmation that the boat they arranged for you broke down, so you can claim on insurance. I cannot see how it would affect their insurance.

Lol no way! Don’t pay op some companies are absolutely delusional.

Was the boat the only way to leave the location or was it more of a day trip opportunity? I think the position is a bit different either way. If you physically couldn't leave and had no choice to stay then I think you have a case not to pay because the hotel's arrangements caused that situation. But if you stayed an extra night to be able to go on a day trip then there's an element of choice there and maybe you should pay something but negotiate a lower price to reflect the breakdown and uncleaned room.

Sorry I meant to say that you stayed two nights. The daily price is supposed to include the boat trip and room cleaning but on one of the two days you were deprived off both things so the price due the second day needs to be reduced.
