Splitsavers always taking my reserved seat!!

Chatandtea · 08/07/2023 12:28

Is it just me but seems majority of time I get on a train, a person with a split saver ticket has taken my seat not realising that their ticket has only reserved a seat for 1 leg of their journey. Frustrated that people don’t check their reservations more thoroughly but also that the trains companies/sellers are allowing this confusion to roll on and on. Often spoils journey trying to sort the issue out

Yes I know, but if you have reserved a seat surely it should be available for you to sit in with having to ask someone to move

I disagree. There are often no shows. I'm not going to move until someone turns up as otherwise someone else without a reservation may take it and I've moved unnecessarily. Though I am ready to move straight away.

It wouldn't ruin my journey. If it does for you then I'd look into treatment for your anxiety.

Maybe you just revel in confrontation, who knows? Seriously can imagine there’s some people who it gives a sense or satisfaction to kick someone out of their seat but I just find it awkward situation to what hoping would be a pleasant journey

My point is that this appears to be a perpetual mistake, shouldn’t either the booking process be making this clearer or people be taking more notice?

Good idea, have you contacted any of the booking apps that offer split save to suggest this improvement to avoid inconvenience or embarrassment to their customers?

BibbleandSqwauk · 08/07/2023 14:39

Yes but then you go and get help. I travel by train a lot, this happens a lot and actually I've never once had a flat out refusal .. bit of huffing and tutting and ticket checking and asking me to find somewhere else but a firm and polite "no, I've booked this seat, thank you" usually works just fine.

Yes I’m going to and the train companies

No, I hate confrontation. This isn't confrontation for me, it's just politely approaching someone.

Well we’ll have to agree to disagree that sitting in someone else’s reserved seat (unless has left the station it was reserved from some time ago) is rude and selfish. I would think so if people I knew were doing it and certainly be more likely to travel with a company who avoided this situation. Sorry I’m not going to ‘adapt’ to thinking being rude and selfish is acceptable, parking on other peoples drives or whatever else is ok

What are your thoughts on someone being in the seat for the earlier part of the journey you’re not on?

EmeraldFox · 08/07/2023 14:45

Confrontation is an angry disagreement, if that happens I would be upset and would walk away, but thankfully that hasn't happened for me, just a polite 'excuse me, I have a reservation for this seat' type encounter and checking of tickets.

Well I would rather stand than sit in someone else’s reserved seat unless very unlikely they are going to occupy it or even better just reserve a seat for myself

So we’ve moved on from someone occupying a seat to on a public train to someone parking on your private drive. Seems to me that you’re moving the goalposts a bit.

You also appear to be just fine standing up for yourself in this thread, so you can’t be totally conflict avoidant 😉

Yes can’t see why anyone would have a problem with that and the screen usually displays that the seat unreserved for that leg of the journey

You don’t have to be a conflict avoidant or have anxiety issues to not enjoy confrontation

It doesn’t have to be a disagreement coming to blows, having to ‘confront’ someone about an issue is not something many people find pleasant

In those circumstances I would say that most people wouldn’t vacate that seat until the booked passenger came on, in case they never turn up anyway. They should of course vacate the seat if the passenger does turn up.

Blossomtoes · 08/07/2023 14:24

I agree. It’s amazing how many reserved seats never get claimed.

You May already know but it’s because if you get an anytime return, you can pick a train for a reserved seat. I generally make the train on which I have a reserved seat about 60/70% of the time which means that the rest of the time my reserved seat won’t be occupied.

It sounds like you struggle with anxiety and I would try to get help with that. Being autistic I've had to learn to manage anxious feelings, one way by assuming that people are going to behave decently until they don't, assuming the best. So approaching a person expecting them to behave in a polite manner, not expecting a confrontation to occur. It usually doesn't, people are mostly okay.

Personally I would or at the very least be alert to anyone looking like they have found ‘their’ seat and pop up before they have to say anything

If someone isn't afraid of being approached then they are unlikely to do that as it could just be a person without a reservation looking for a seat and then they could end up standing for a long time unnecessarily.

Yes not had a punch up over it yet and don’t expect to 😉 just think it’s unacceptable I have to ask. I suppose different MNs have different views of acceptable behaviour

If the train has left the reserved from station 5-10 minutes ago then enjoy my reserved seat and I’d hold no hard feelings if I have to ask you to move if I get on at the next station

Buying split tickets is a way to get the cheapest fare possible, maybe you don't need to worry about costs.....

😂 wtf

Lilly11a · 08/07/2023 15:05

I had the opposite problem yesterday. I had a split seat so moved when I should and then the man refused to get out my new seat .

So this person should gather their stuff, stand up, wait for an acceptable to you amount of time, only to sit down again when you don’t show?

Or

They can remain seated and move if you show up.

I’ve changed my opinion, you’re not conflict avoidant you are self centered.
