Blood clot???

mumsnetter123 · 07/07/2023 19:31

Has anyone had a blood clot in their calf before? I had abit of muscle pain earlier but it was on the side and front and I noticed I have slight "swelling" I'm not sure if it is, as it looks like a muscle? It's on my calf it's like a bump on the side of my lower leg, people say it looks like a muscle and it's just abit bigger than the other leg, It's so hard to explain, I'm on my feet all the time because of my job, maybe I'm being dramatic

Are you sure you haven't just bumped it?

I've got one.

Never noticed a bumb, mine was a constant cramping pain down the side of my calf and across the bottom.

Slight swelling which I didn't actually notice until urgent care nurse measured it, it did feel tight at times but not sure if that was the cramp feeling.

Mine was worse when I stood up after relaxing, going up and down the stairs was hell, and I've got a 9 month old, who was 3 months old when it was first discovered so constantly up and down them in the night 🙈

I'm really sorry you had to go through that! So you'd know about it really if you had one, I think it is a muscle and it's just a bit larger on this side other than that everything is normal for me, maybe if I start noticing anything like that I will go get checked, this is fine with rest and usually feels abit tight etc if I've done a lot of stuff like work/walking etc

I had one, twice.
Hot to the touch, fatter than the other leg, agony when walking. Never had any lumps or bumps.
Could it be a reaction to a bite of some sort?

It's so strange to explain it's similar on the other leg, it's just abit larger on my right leg than left, I think I was being dramatic but health anxiety is the worst, I've had a viral cough the past 4 weeks aswel it's just about gone that worried me too, but my daughter and partner and few of my friends had the same thing so put my mind as ease

I thought a blood clot in your calf was serious?

Is it not?

I’ve had several, which have all gone on to be Pulmonary Embolisms. I’ve been incredibly lucky not to have died and I’m now on blood thinners for life.

The first time it felt like I’d pulled a muscle and it hurt to put my foot on the floor or pull my toes up towards me. My leg wasn’t swollen or hot to the touch and if I hadn’t collapsed in A&E I’d be dead now as the doctor told me they’d been about to tell me I was fine.

The second and third times I felt absolutely no leg pain whatsoever and had to argue with the doctor that my breathing wasn’t right and it wasn’t just because I’d walked up a hill and I was unfit. Eventually I was given a DDimer test (I think just to shut me up) which showed that there were problems, subsequently confirmed by a ct scan.

Ours is a genetic thing. My sister was fobbed off by her doctor and told to stop wasting their time on an insect bite, several hours before being taken to A&E by ambulance, on oxygen. My mum was told that she couldn’t possibly have an embolism as she would be in incredible pain and wouldn’t be able to sit up or talk normally (absolute rubbish). Guess what the CT scan showed up?

My point is that these are not always easy to diagnose and if you don’t have the most common symptoms, together with tales of long flights etc, it is very easy to be fobbed off. I would always go to A&E with any clot type of concerns. But if you do decide not to go, or you’re sent home, please please go back if you start getting breathless or develop chest pain. They are absolutely deadly if left untreated and it’s too important to mess about with.

Calf pain, uneven swelling or unusual lumps on the legs can all be signs of DVT. You don’t always feel very unwell, but the risk is that the clot can travel up to the lungs. I would go to A&E.
