Is the UK beyond repair?

I’m sure plenty will come along to say I’m BU but for the past few weeks I’ve really started to question where this country and our society is heading and whether or not things are ever going to get better and when that might be.

We have economic chaos driven by high inflation, increasing interest rates and a total lack of urgency by anyone in charge to seemingly do anything about it. We have a government in power that seem to have nothing but contempt for anyone that doesn’t resemble their backers, ministers openly mocking critics on social media and a PM who can not remember if he may or may not have had something to do with benefiting from £5 million of Russian money. What on Earth have we become?

Our Health service is being systematically picked apart and left to decay away much to the detriment of those who rely on it or who cannot afford Private healthcare. We have Medical professionals striking because they are underpaid again to the detriment of those who rely on said services, wait lists are through the roof and the levels of care being received are understandably inadequate.

The education sector is a ticking time bomb because teachers are seeing the demands of their roles increase, funding cuts, the behaviour of the pupils start to become impossible to manage and the prospect of an easier life switching to another career too hard to resist.

Food bank usage is at an all time high, not just by those in charge who don’t know poverty but working professionals who can not afford to feed their families because the cost of living has zapped every last penny from them. The reality on the streets of real life Is so far detached from that seen on social media that it’s like looking at a different planet.

It just feels bleak and I don’t see how things are going to change, I’m often an optimist but this is stretching any semblance of light in the tunnel. Anyone else? Is this the type of world you want your children to live in? Surely they deserve better? How can this be fixed?

I'm of an age where I've been here before. Sooner or later things will improve. Might take a few years though.

Yes, there’s good years and bad.

And those who can afford it should pay more in taxes - always the solution of the left. We (the professional middle classes) already pay vast amounts of tax. Perhaps the government should cut its cloth better: less waste and inefficiency.

The left are intellectually lazy and basically ideologically led.

The ‘pay more taxes’ rant never works out in reality. Ever. Look at what happened in France when they had to reverse wealth taxes because the rich were leaving. Look at what’s happening now with oil companies in this country. BP and Shell are leaving the North Sea because of windfall taxes. The smaller producers are also saying they will pull out of Oil production in this country. Well folks, this is what you asked for. Now you will have even more expensive energy AND less taxes than before you hiked tax rates. Stupidity at its finest.

SNP seems to be going that way. Whack up taxes.

There is no legal requirement for a refugee to claim asylum in any particular country. Neither the 1951 Refugee Convention nor EU law requires a refugee to claim asylum in one country rather than another. There is no rule requiring refugees to claim in the first safe country in which they arrive.

You do realise this is all happening under a Tory government that’s been in power for 13 years? Wtf has that to do with “the left”?

askmeonemoretime · 06/07/2023 23:43

Tax all income at the same rate as job income. That would make an enormous difference.

Scotland is in big big big trouble in the next decade or so. They will be needing even more of English taxes as their oil industry is going through wholesale destruction. So even less home grown energy AND less taxes.

askmeonemoretime · 06/07/2023 23:47

Then allow Scotland to be independent

Hawkins0001 · 06/07/2023 23:48

Instead of the current political parties.

What about letting our intelligence services run the country ?

Those that know and have the knowledge should hold the reigns of power ?

Scotland does not want independence. They said so less than 10 years ago. And they want independence even less right now. Wonder why. Because their economy is up the creek, without a paddle in sight.

Teentaxidriver · 06/07/2023 23:50

“I don’t mind if people use mass migration by boat” must be one of the most astoundingly flippant comments I have ever read on Mumsnet. The mass movement of illegal immigrants into this country has extraordinary implications for the existing population. Where will they live, who will teach their children, who will fund their healthcare and dentistry, who will care for their sick? We can’t just acquire hundreds of thousands of additional citizens every year - many many of whom have little English, no schooling, no skills - without a lot of extra public funding.

Oh yes, please, cut them loose and save ourselves a fortune in subsidies !

The only thing I would miss is the blue background off the Union Jack 🙄

I meant the term. Ot was a comment on the wording .

Someone criticised the illegal migration wording. There needs to be a way to say migration outside working visas as it’s going to continue to increase.

Here are some more sobering numbers. Our debt to GDP ratio stands at over 100%. We now owe more than we produce every year. There are 6 million people on universal credit. We are borrowing about £25 billion a month to pay the benefits bill and debt interest. Our economic productivity has not shifted at all in 20 years.

Labour are going to fix this by… wait for it…..taxing private school fees. You heard that right. That £1.6b a year is going to solve all the problems. It’s like a satire sketch.

What’s the government that got us into this mess doing to fix it? I haven’t seen an avalanche of innovative thinking flooding from the Cabinet.

TrixieFatell · 07/07/2023 00:05

I do feel for the first time ever worried for my children. University fees, lack of affordable housing, the state of education, the health care system etc etc. It does feel a bit bleak at the moment. When I was their age I felt like life had so many possibilities and I could do whatever I wanted. They don't seem to feel the same way 😔

Sorry to disappoint you but the Scottish economy is outperforming the rest of the UK

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/07/2023 00:29

The left?

Who exactly are you talking about? I have seen the Tory party🤯 and even the international money markets called the left.🤯🤯🤯

We're all tired of the meaningless Tory culture wars against the left.🙄

Teentaxidriver · 07/07/2023 00:50

So many points spring to mind - Stamer’s VAT on school fees plan will unleash hell. Parents who voted for this policy, with state educated children will think wistfully of days when class sizes stood at 35. There will be a huge influx of pupils into state. Middle class parents won’t transform their local school, they’ll home school or pay for extra tuition, music lessons, sports lessons for their child outside school. The numbers don’t even add up. It’ll generate less money than that 1.6. But it’ll be worth it for all the ideologues - the destruction of one of the few successful sectors in this country on the altar of ideology. No matter that the education of thousands of children will be destroyed. Tasty bit of class warfare.

Teentaxidriver · 07/07/2023 01:01

No where else is doing well either.
Inflation and problems are affecting everyone.

We've emerged from a global pandemic... And run into a war affecting global energy.

Yes other EU countries are suffering the effects of Covid, inflation, Ukraine war, and the energy crisis but on the whole the important infrastructures which form the basis of civilised societies, generally speaking, are functioning
: for example the trains and public transport systems work and are subsidised by governments, the health care systems although not free are reasonable and accessible, education is largely free, including university education, there is better access to social care, public housing and childcare. All of these things seem to be broken in the uk atm.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/07/2023 01:15

BTW I love the idea that what will unleash hell is VAT on school fees.🤣🤣🤣

BlippiIsAnnoying · 07/07/2023 02:44

It's a shame we can't prosecute these corrupt bastards who have asset stripped this country for treason.
