I have started listening to podcasts when in the car/tube/train. I enjoy documentaries about unsolved murders, about business stories e.g. 'the making of...' or 'how Home Depot works', but also Ted Talks, stuff about skincare, and biographies.

I would love to hear any recommendations you have that fit the above. ANd if they don't but you absolutely love a podcast, please share that too. Thanks!

Strong songs. I know not what you asked for but he deconstructs hit songs and talks about what’s going on musically that makes them so good. I love it.

thebellagio · 06/07/2023 13:29

I generally listen to comedy/entertainment podcasts

My faves are:
Shagged Married Annoyed
Off Menu (the episodes with Nick Mohammad and Rylan Clarke were excellent, both an utter treasure)
Where there's a will there's a wake (I agree @JorisBonson, Kathy Burke is hilarious)

I also love SmartLess with Jason Batemen, Will Arnett, Sean Hayes -
Literally with Rob Lowe
and as a HUGE Parks and Recs fan, I quite enjoy Parks and Recollections - it's getting into its stride a bit more

StonwEd · 06/07/2023 13:59

Not quite in your genre but I listen to loads, these are my favourites

off menu
Wolf and owl
partners in crime
Adam Buxton
Films to be buried with
Drunk women solving crime

Call Jonathan Pie
Bad people

there’s more but I have been called away at work!

Mals2022 · 06/07/2023 14:13

Celebrity Memoir Book Club is really good if you enjoy biographies

ILookAtTheFloor · 06/07/2023 14:17

I like true crime podcasts.

Really recommend Believe in Magic on BBC Sounds. True crime but very different. I listened to it twice!

The Boy in the Woods, again BBC Sounds and very good.

Also enjoy They Walk Among Us although the guy has the strangest cadence to his speech which can be annoying.

Case File is similar but it's Aussie and good too.

I like in-depth investigations and no tedious chat.

GulesMeansRed · 06/07/2023 14:17

The lady vanishes
The Missing
Any of the bbc news ones - the missing crypto queen, believe in magic, vishal, etc
Stuff you should know
You’re dead to me

GulesMeansRed · 06/07/2023 14:21

Also on the true crime theme, Thr Doorstep Murder and Death in Ice Valley (both bbc)

Itsallsostressful · 06/07/2023 14:25

Not really on your topics but I love Katherine Ryan Telling Everybody Everything....funny and interesting 😊

Appalonia · 06/07/2023 14:29

You must remember this Podcast about the Manson family was v good.

Xeren · 06/07/2023 14:34

If you like biographies you may like Trashy Divorces. Each episode features a real life trashy divorce of a famous / historical figure. It’s juicy, but you also learn a lot about the subject’s backgrounds / lives / careers.

BodegaSushi · 06/07/2023 14:42

True Crime -

  • Going West
  • Moms and Mystery
  • Crimelines/In Sight (same person and format, but different shows, In Sight became Crimelines)
  • Crime Junkie

If you also like spooky stories I can recommend

  • Scared to Death
  • Radio Rental
BodegaSushi · 06/07/2023 14:43

An interesting long form one about catfishing is called 'Sweet Bobby'. 6 episodes

ifIwerenotanandroid · 06/07/2023 15:08

So if I want to listen to most of the Mr Ballen podcasts I need Prime, with 5 available for free on Spotify - is that right? It would help if posters indicated which podcasts are free. I followed some recommendations on another thread only to find one needed to be paid for & another, of which I endured a whole episode before giving up, was a lacklustre true crime presentation with the co-host interjecting pointlessly all the time. I hate podcasts like that.

Here's another vote for 'Uncanny', particularly the special with Mark Gatiss from a literary festival. I'd also recommend Lucy Worsley's 'Lady Killers' which examines a different woman each time & goes into the feminist/sociological/historical apsects as well. For something weird, rude & sometimes ROFL territory, try 'Dear Joan & Jericha'. All free.

Dontlistitonfacebook · 06/07/2023 15:17

These are all free on Stitcher:

Bear Brook
Dateline
Something was wrong
Was I in a cult?
Hidden Brain

I also listened to Hoaxed free on Tortoise Media

ifIwerenotanandroid · 06/07/2023 18:19

Thanks @Dontlistitonfacebook

LadyWhistledownsPen · 06/07/2023 18:29

True Crime
The trial of Lucy Letby
The Missing - this is my favourite podcast, there’s lots of seasons if you haven’t listened to it before, I’d listen from the start because occasionally there’s updates from previous cases.
Scamanda
Bad Blood/The Dropout - both covering Elizabeth Holmes
Stolen Hearts

Business
How I built this - I really enjoyed the Airbnb episode, Bobbi Brown, Lush Cosmetics (amazing story)
Good Ship Brewdog
Hungry - I like this one as I work in the food industry in a start up and it’s interviewing similar brands, Charlie Bigham, Mindful Chef etc

Hope that helps!

Caradonna · 06/07/2023 18:49

The rest is politics and A Good Read on Radio4with Harriet Gilbert who invites two guests to choose favourite books which they read and discuss. You find some random good reads!

Username9917 · 06/07/2023 18:49

Oooh I have strong feelings about this!

  • The mystery show - my FAVE EVER was one called 'the mystery show'. A girl solving every day mysteries for random people, it's so sweet and interesting, I'm so sad it was only one series!
  • You're dead to me - such a funny and interesting podcast about parts of history you might not know much about, so good

true crime (an aficionado here, they got me through months and months in hospital)

  • casefile (he has the BEST voice)
  • redhanded - like hanging out with your pals
  • morbid - as above
  • red collar - she has a great voice
  • murder with my husband - they're such a cute pair
  • southern fried true crime - again, awesome voice
  • bad women - a feminist perspective on the Jack the Ripper murders, so interesting
  • serial season 1 - absolutely compelling
CaveMum · 06/07/2023 18:54

I have dozens of podcasts on the go - means I always have something to listen to!

You’d probably enjoy:

Real Crime Profile
Crime Analyst
The Missing Crypto Queen
The Lazarus Heist
The Coming Storm

Others I’d recommend but may not be what you are looking for:

The Rest is Politics
Leading (sister podcast to the above)
Newscast
Parenting Hell
The Infinite Monkey Cage
You’re Dead To Me
Evil Genius
Now You’re Asking
Off Menu
Films To Be Buried With

gabsdot45 · 06/07/2023 19:05

One that hasn't been mentioned is the Rowan Farrow one about Harvey Weinstein. I can't remember what it's called though,
Truth and lies , about Jeffrey Epstein

SkinnyMalinkyLankyLegs · 06/07/2023 19:09

I'm thinking of getting into podcasts. Where is the best place to get them from, Spotify?

tulippa · 06/07/2023 19:12

Criminal (google Criminal podcast) is a really intelligent and interesting look at all aspects of crime. It's really thought provoking and sensitively done.

Also second Bad People and Uncanny.
