Drinking and vaping while pregnant

Worried I have hurt my baby

I know what is done is done but how much damage could I have done?

Been trying for 18 months to get pregnant and it just hasn’t happened for me

As I do every month I took a test 5 days before my period - it was negative

Then on the first day of my missed period - it was negative (one other time about two months ago I had a missed period by 4 days and had negative tests also)

Then I tested again on the 6th day of my missed period - negative

I haven’t been out since before Covid. I then went out because I needed a night out. I vaped so much and I drank about 6 beers and 5 vodkas over a period of about 6 hours (maybe more). To top it off I then ate a kebab from a questionable shop.

In the morning I thought I’ll do a test as still had one left and it’s positive. I panicked and went straight to the shop and got two digital tests and 2 non digital tests. All are positive. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

This was Sunday morning I found out. Now all I’m doing is fretting and crying incase I’ve done some serious damage. I have not touched alcohol or vapes since and will not in any way shape or form.

Any advice welcome please? I have name changed also

Don't worry about that. That early on the embryo doesn't, I believe, even share a blood stream with you. You will be fine. Congratulations.

Lots of us have got drunk etc before knowing we were pg. Don't worry about it, the baby will be fine. And congratulations 🎉 That's fantastic!

I'm a little confused but if I'm right, your period was due about a week ago? And the test you took six days after it was due was negative? So most likely, you're technically about 4 weeks pregnant?

Don't give it another thought. The baby isn't sharing your blood supply and a few drinks and some vaping will be fine. I think at least half the children I know had something similar - not least the 3 "honeymoon" babies I know of where frankly, the drinking and the smoking also came with the endless sex! Grin

Thank you all. Google has had my head in a spin and obviously to early to tell anyone in real life.

Yes on Saturday I was 6 days later and the test was negative and I went out drinking and vaping. Sunday morning which meant I was 7 days late I had 5 positive pregnancy tests.

Don’t worry, it’s very common, as long as you stop now. Baby doesn’t share your blood supply that early on. Congratulations!

I very rarely drink, even before I had kids. But one night I did go out with sister to a gig and drank loads- like 2 day hangover loads. Found out I was pregnant about a week later and felt awful. Baby was absolutely fine though.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Lots of women drink before they realise they are pregnant. Congratulations!

Hibiscrubbed · 06/07/2023 11:46

The embryo won’t have got any of that. It’ll be fine on that score. And billions of us do it. It’s nigh-on impossible to know initially. Good luck with it all. And stop fretting.

SnackyOnassis · 06/07/2023 11:49

Congratulations on your pregnancy!! 18 months is a long slog, you must be so thrilled (once you get over the initial shock!)
As all PPs have said, there's no risk to baby this early on at all. You're golden, enjoy the next few weeks of having a lovely, exciting secret and finding excuses to not drink at the next night out!!

ModestMoon · 06/07/2023 11:57

Don't worry OP it is totally normal. I went on a massive new years bender when I was a similar stage along, like you this was out of the norm for me. A friend went on a once in a lifetime island holiday - drink every night, smoking, hot tubs, raw fish... you name it! Yep, found out when she got back that she had been pregnant the whole time. baby was fine.

whodawhodaeho · 06/07/2023 12:01

Congrats! Don't worry about it, many women carry on as normal before realising they're pregnant. You'll be fine, you're baby'll be fine but obvs don't drink, smoke or vape now you know

blor · 06/07/2023 12:44

No need to worry at all

Summer2424 · 06/07/2023 12:50

Hi @whathaveidoneornotdone hun don't worry, relax and enjoy your pregnancy xx

Emmylou22 · 06/07/2023 12:52

A few days before I found out I was pregnant I was at a wedding. Smoking and downing jagerbombs. I think this happens a lot! Your baby will be fine 💗

Wicksytricksy · 06/07/2023 12:54

Congratulations!

DD - I'd been at a festival all weekend drinking for about 11 hours a day, started to think "this hangover is lasting ages", checked my app, day 38 of cycle....

DS - it was lockdown, we'd got a bit too enthusiastic with buying leftover booze from local cafes and restaurants so were working our way through that as well as trying to work and look after DD. Kept crying irrationally, blamed it on stress, checked app, day 37 of cycle...

Was TTC both times 🤦🏻‍♀️

bumblebee2235 · 06/07/2023 13:03

You will be fine one off night that early on will be no issue.. I've known some ladies not find out till much later on :) as for vaping.. apparently NHS prescribes them to pregnant ladies now as nicotine replacement my midwife told me. Might be special ones though.

GG1986 · 06/07/2023 13:05

Don't worry, I know someone who didn't find out she was pregnant until she was 16 weeks(pill failed due to a tummy bug) she was out drinking and smoking every weekend and her girl is a teenager now and absolutely fine. Congratulations x

Mangogogogo · 06/07/2023 13:09

I didn’t find out until 14 weeks and had been doing many questionable things. I smoked and drank a lot! She’s actually an amazing 9 year old now, not a thing wrong. I had the worry too but after a few chats with the midwife I was assured and I mean theres not a lot can be done now anyway!
