YABU - there should not be jail time for some who download hundreds of images of child abuse

YANBU - downloading hundreds of images of sexual abuse of children should mean jail

OP posts:

YANBU.
It blows my mind that ANYONE would want to see images like that. Imagine even typing it into a search engine. Just horrific.

Snowpatrolling · 05/07/2023 16:00

My uncle got done for downloading child porn and animal porn. Thousands upon thousands of images, judge gave a suspended sentence cos he was an outstanding member of the community. Needless to say him and his wife had to flee the town with their children. Disgusting and he should have been in prison.

bumblebee2235 · 05/07/2023 16:11

I think castration

Blackbyrd · 05/07/2023 16:14

Repugnant as this individual is, you have to actually distribute banned images or participate in the abuse to get a jail sentence nowadays. Trouble is, if they are actually detained, they come out to sympathetic noises from Probation, placed quite often into supported housing at @£450 per week and encouraged to claim full benefits. Punishments need to be harsher, for a start ban them from claiming state benefits if convicted

Laiste · 05/07/2023 16:23

There isn't the room in the prisons to accommodate the sheer number of men who are convicted of 'making' (ie: downloading and viewing) indecent images of children on multiple occasions. Day in day out.

IMO they should have their hands chopped off and the tattoo NONCE across their foreheads.

BertieBotts · 05/07/2023 16:28

YANBU because they should, but my understanding is that it is so widespread it is not currently possible

Sad

Beyond grim.

No you don't. Sentencing guidelines provide for a custodial sentence for possession.

Whether you get a custodial sentence for possession will depend on a lot of factors - the severity and quantity of the images, length of time, remorse / preparedness to work with the authorities, previous offences etc.

Another thinly veiled anti trans thread

FYI men who identify as men also don’t get jail time for downloading child abuse images

Ver few do, even when they’re category A images

There is so little room in prisons to lock up those who simply offend online

Its not "thinly". Its out and open. OP has even referred to the trans person as IT!

Unfortunately, it has been shown that sex offenders who are castrated (usually chemical castration but I imagine it would be the same with physical castration) are not prevented from perpetrating further sex crimes - they simply use foreign objects to commit the assault, often causing more damage to the victim.

Yes, let's be nice to the scum who wants off to pictures and videos of kids being raped.

Trans or no, I think "it" is pretty fucking apt for anyone who watches child sex abuse for sexual gratification.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 05/07/2023 16:36

Ex bil was caught with csa images, lowest category. 100 hours community service, a trip to therapy and on the sex offenders list for 5 years.

I'd have put his bits in an industrial anvil and pressed the switch.

Cattenberg · 05/07/2023 16:38

My former neighbour, who was caught with dozens of CSA images, wasn’t sent to prison, even though his offences just passed the custody threshold. The judge thought a three-year supervision and treatment order would be better at protecting the public than a two-month jail sentence.

That said, I have noticed a few cases where a trans women has escaped a custodial sentence because the judge thought they would find prison particularly difficult.

bozzabollix · 05/07/2023 16:40

We found out an ex friend of ours had done this. He got a suspended sentence with the reason being it’s the fastest growing crime and there’s not the prison space. Obviously it blew his life apart, he’s got no friends now and his partner split with him, but there should have been more of a penalty.

It’s shocking and it’s made me realise there are many people out there to be wary of.

And it’s not a trans issue.

mindutopia · 05/07/2023 16:41

Yes, of course it should. I have a family member who pled guilty to sexually abusing his own daughter. He pled on only some of the charges so dismissed the others. He served no time in prison whatsoever, only a community based rehabilitation programme for sexual offenders. Mind boggling really. Fwiw, I know he has re-offended since then but he claims to be a ‘naturist’ and so multiple instances have been swept under the rug because he deserves his ‘private life’ now that he’s rehabilitated. Fucking sick.

IamRoyFuckingKent · 05/07/2023 16:43

The judiciary, the police and society don't give a fuck about women and children. Why on earth don't CSA images attract harsher sentences?
You can only conclude that nobody cares. Not the CPS, the police, judges. Nobody gives a shit. It's so depressing.

Bookworm20 · 05/07/2023 16:43

Not only should it mean prison time, with NO exceptions! It should also mean castrating the sick fuck (as apparently we can't just remove them from the face of the earth) as far as i'm concerned. If they are viewing that stuff, they are clearly a very warped and unnecessary addition to society.

Because there isn’t space to put them anywhere else

FFS what do you lot not understand

You can’t just magic up prison spaces, prison, as it should, is for those who are a risk to the population. Those who ‘only’ download abuse images aren’t going to be an immediate threat to the public.

Oh, Im not defending this person at all.
But the OP makes it out to be that it is because the person is trans.
However, it isnt!
Loads of people have given examples of how this kind of charge doesnt land prison time, regardless of how the perpetrator identifies.

Errrr, right, ok then. I'll note that down that they are not a risk to small children. FFS.

The bottom of the ocean is pretty fucking spacious.

Whether you like it or not the vast majority of people who download CSA images never harm a physical child themselves. Obviously the consumption of the images produces demand but they are not a risk on the streets.

A tiny percentage progress to more serious offending

Again, in studies 4% of men admit to downloading CSA images

if you think we can imprison 4+% of the population you’re on crack

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/07/2023 16:55

I agree that anyone who downloads these sorts of images should go to prison. But they don't. Nothing to do with being trans.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 05/07/2023 16:56

I've half started to think we need penal colonies again. Sex offenders get shipped off, one way ticket, to an island somewhere. No internet. Have it set up so there is a functional society - they work, get paid in their own currency, there's shops and stuff (staffed by themselves) and that's where they live the rest of their lives. The only time they can leave is if they need medical treatment.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/07/2023 16:57

@Flickersy , I know of someone who was sentenced to 11 years for having child abuse images on his computer. There may well have been videos as well as stills, which might have made a difference. By all accounts they were all very nasty.
