To want an actual holiday

A while back we decided to go to Dorset on holiday for 5 nights. I wanted to go abroad but partner didn't. I didn't want to drive hours/ cook/ clean as it's self catering cottage. I wanted an actual holiday. We share all chores at home, that's not an issue but to me a holiday is a break from what you do at home!

Now we've looked at the weather coming up and it's raining! So basically I'll be driving hours to do exactly what I do at home. I don't want to go out in the rain!

Should we cancel (can get all money back) and book a last minute in Spain/ Portugal? Partner is almost convinced.

Self catering is actually a good idea when you have young kids. But now mine are teens I'm for hotels. I don't want the 'catering' bit - cooking and food shopping is a chore! Plus you have to do a major clean up before you leave...

I love a seaside cottage holiday, but you do have to have a wet weather plan. Since you can cancel and refund, I would absolutely do that.

As an aside, I dread the hotel breakfast buffet in the same way you want to avoid all cooking /cleaning on holiday. It’s fine to decide what works for you and book your break to fit that.

YES!!!! Cancel and go to Spain or Portugal.

I almost divorced DH for his insistence on 'holidays' in Wales and Devon. Damp cottages in solid rain with no dishwashers so I ended up doing more work than usual and trying to entertain DC in cramped ill-equipped cottages or fork out staggering amounts for over-priced shitty 'experiences'. We had an almighty row and from then on went abroad. Everyone happier.

@SoWhatEh i suspect you’re not my Mum, but what you describe is exactly what happened in my family when I was small.

PS - during lockdown we had a couple of great breaks inCornwall, but it was a wet week in Tenby that gave me my ‘get me on a plane’ moment!!!

It was a wet week in Fort William that did it for me. It rained EVERY day.
We'd had a lucky run up to that point, with a few UK holidays with gorgeous weather.
But one solidly wet week and I've now got ptsd and don't want to risk it again for a while!

We're almost three weeks into our campervan holiday. Heatwave first few days, then cooler with sunny spells and cloudy which has been better for our old dogs. So many times that rain has been forecast and not happened - we have had one shower in the afternoon and one overnight. Obviously if you want to go abroad then go for it and it sounds like you do tbh but don't let negative/ wrong forecasts stop you if want to stay in the UK they've not been too accurate at all for us.
If it's your only chance I would go abroad. I couldn't just go on holiday in the UK, we have to go abroad a couple of times a year to get our fix of more guaranteed sunshine and warm sea swimming. UK self catering can often work out around the same price for a decent half board abroad.
