To want an actual holiday

A while back we decided to go to Dorset on holiday for 5 nights. I wanted to go abroad but partner didn't. I didn't want to drive hours/ cook/ clean as it's self catering cottage. I wanted an actual holiday. We share all chores at home, that's not an issue but to me a holiday is a break from what you do at home!

Now we've looked at the weather coming up and it's raining! So basically I'll be driving hours to do exactly what I do at home. I don't want to go out in the rain!

Should we cancel (can get all money back) and book a last minute in Spain/ Portugal? Partner is almost convinced.

No brainer.
Go have a sunny holiday doing and feeling something different.
Have a lovely time

Devto21t · 05/07/2023 09:49

Honestly can’t wait to get home - got to that stage where all the towels are slightly damp, there’s no tumble dryer and not good enough weather to hang them on the line! And we’ve got to eat up the random assortment of self catering leftovers.

Muhwanda · 05/07/2023 09:50

Yes cancel, I love a uk self catering hol but having just got back from a ‘proper’ abroad holiday in lovely hotels with the sun shining, I really appreciated the change!

snowlady4 · 05/07/2023 09:51

This what you wanted from the start- and now the stars are aligning for you! You get your money back. You have the time, money and desire to go abroad- you absolutely should!
Let us know where you go!

No tumble drier is the worst thing ever in a self catering cottage.

Yes, yes, yes, do it!
Otherwise it's just the same old shit in a different place.
My personal feeling is that a holiday is not a holiday unless it involves stepping on a plane.
We're all different, before anyone jumps down my throat for that!
Hope you manage to change it OP, and have a wonderfully relaxed holiday in the sun.

Devto21t · 05/07/2023 09:56

The stuff I hung up to dry two days ago is still damp! So much for the pack light philosophy!!

menope · 05/07/2023 09:59

Na that's not a holiday to me either, why was it booked in the first place?

We booked it when the weather was amazing! Didn't feel like it would be a struggle and we looked at various activities we could do (albeit weather permitting).

Was very silly not to stick to my guns but I think the main gripe is the weather.

We're going to see what we can get for same money or pay slightly more and fingers crossed we can work something out. We've never done a package holiday before so I think my partner didn't want to deal with the unknown.

Thanks everyone!

@justwantsomesun it's such a lottery with the UK weather. I would prefer to do a shorter trip like a long weekend somewhere I want to be rather than a longer trip somewhere I wasn't keen on. Have a look on Holiday Pirates.

GCalltheway · 05/07/2023 10:24

Cancel !!!! Head to literally anywhere that makes your heart sing

BestieBunch · 05/07/2023 10:38

As a Dorset girl…

Do it… book a last minute abroad!

We went to Devon earlier in the year for self catering lodge with 3 kids, I hated every second of it! We normally go abroad but OH thought it would be a nice family thing to do… it wasn’t xx

sandyhappypeople · 05/07/2023 10:40

We do staycations with a little one and dogs to factor in, I live for the beach and not having to think about the pressures of work for x amount of days, so to me a self catering uk holiday IS a holiday, and a fantastic one at that, I don’t care about the weather at all.

BUT if it’s just the two of you to think about, even I would say go abroad, I’m not sure why you wouldn’t TBH? Do it while you have the freedom to!!

Devto21t · 05/07/2023 10:41

Yeah we booked this when we were expecting a glorious summer - probably expectations too high after the last few years and glorious June

justwantsomesun · 05/07/2023 11:05

We do have a child but old enough to not need constant attention plus we want to spend time with them. They were pretty upset we hadn't chosen the abroad option to start with.

I always love self-catering in the UK, but then it's a step up from the camping we always did when the kids were little. We're easily entertained, and know how to have fun and relax, even if it's cold and raining outside.

What is with all these men petrified of travelling abroad to the ‘unknown’ and trying to prevent their families from doing the same? 😵‍💫

Cancel and go abroad

Sorry. I assumed, wrongly, based on a thread from yesterday.

I’ll retry:

“What is it with all these partners petrified of travelling abroad to the ‘unknown’ and trying to prevent their families from doing the same?”

Apologies.

Whichwhatnow · 05/07/2023 11:19

Yes, absolutely do it. Hotel, sunshine, swimming pool, beach, eating out for relatively cheap, wandering around a completely new place etc etc vs cooking and cleaning in a rainy UK cottage?? No contest!!

70sTomboy · 05/07/2023 11:20

Cancel and go via the airport.

I have disabled DH and dog, we holiday here, I'm really struggling to get the enthusiasm to sort it this year. The planning, the packing, getting there, doing stuff when we are there, cooking, all falls to me. After 30 years I'm bored of doing the same shit!

It's all good and perfectly normal assumption to make.

I think it is a personal thing rather than general in this case. She comes from a country where you don't go abroad and a beach holiday within same country is very normal. She also prefers a cooler summer rather than hot which is the opposite of me!

I prefer to book self catering so I can eat breakfast in my PJs and eat somewhere different every evening. Self catering isn't the problem here - the weather forecast is!

If you can get a 100% refund and find something suitable abroad last minute then DO IT! 😃
