To want an actual holiday

justwantsomesun · 05/07/2023 08:48

A while back we decided to go to Dorset on holiday for 5 nights. I wanted to go abroad but partner didn't. I didn't want to drive hours/ cook/ clean as it's self catering cottage. I wanted an actual holiday. We share all chores at home, that's not an issue but to me a holiday is a break from what you do at home!

Now we've looked at the weather coming up and it's raining! So basically I'll be driving hours to do exactly what I do at home. I don't want to go out in the rain!

Should we cancel (can get all money back) and book a last minute in Spain/ Portugal? Partner is almost convinced.

Do it.

have a look at Jet2. They have some last min deals on.

An all inc holiday in the sun is so much more of a holiday for me. I don’t care if the kids just eat chips for a week.

TheWalrusdidbeseech · 05/07/2023 11:25

I think it's only worth having a self-catering option if you have kids - so separate rooms and a more comfortable stay than being crammed in one room,

if you go as a large group of friends,

or at a push if you have amazing cafes and restaurants across the road so no need to do anything in the rental, ever 😂

A real holiday a flight away for me anytime.

It's all good and perfectly normal assumption to make.

I think it is a personal thing rather than general in this case. She comes from a country where you don't go abroad and a beach holiday within same country is very normal. She also prefers a cooler summer rather than hot which is the opposite of me!

Just seen your partner doesn't like hot weather... Is there somewhere you could compromise on with warm dry weather but not too hot?

I think having see the forecast, she will suck it up. A 'damp' holiday is worse. We'll go by the coast and choose a place with good facilities

Yes. If you can get your money back then do that and go abroad. I would always choose to go abroad rather than holiday in the UK

MindPalace · 05/07/2023 11:46

Am lying on a beach in a hotel in Portugal. Come join! Not a cloud to be seen and none of us have lifted a finger - high season yet to start so no crowds or fights for sun loungers either. Get that plane booked!

I’ve had my fair share of UK holidays ruined by miserable weather and have zero tolerance now.

MaryShelley1818 · 05/07/2023 11:51

Absolutely cancel!! Get yourself to Spain and enjoy a cocktail on a sun lounger in the warmth!

StillWantingADog · 05/07/2023 11:51

If you can get your money back then yeah I’d cancel and try and go somewhere warm

we have a uk break booked for august, can’t get our money back and will be mighty miffed if the weather isn’t at least reasonable

we have had good weather on all uk holidays last few years Tbf- but feels like the luck will run out soon

TheOrigRights · 05/07/2023 12:01

Yes, well there's "cool" as in deciding against Cairo or Seville in favour of Paris or Mauritius and then there's cowering under ice cream stall awnings trying to work out if the slightly less grey clouds are heading your way so you can make a soggy sprint to the penny arcade, and thinking that the best thing about your holiday rental is that it has a tumble dryer!

Sarn1234 · 05/07/2023 12:15

Dorset is lovely if it’s nice weather, You can eat out and don’t have to cook. I’d go to Spain if it’s going to be raining.

Soozikinzii · 05/07/2023 12:26

My sister lives in a beautiful renovated ex Farmhouse in Dorset and has often said why would you go away to actually have less facilities than you have at home ! Which can be very true !

angelcake20 · 05/07/2023 12:32

We are supposed to be going to Dorset this weekend for a free stay in a relative’s caravan. Looking at the forecast, even we are thinking about cancelling! (We go to walk so no fun in bad weather.)

ifonlyicouldthinkstraight · 05/07/2023 12:32

We have a van and we've had some great UK trips in it but I do refer to it as 'housework on wheels' ! It's not totally work free and holidays should be IMO.

itsapalaver · 05/07/2023 09:01

I would if you can get a refund. Five days in constant rain won't be much fun.

Tbf, I love a self catering cottage holiday (I'm on one now!) but apart from breakfast we don't really self cater, we eat out.

Same here with self catering. We mostly eat out- maybe just buy some deli stuff for the evenings if we've had lunch out, but I like that we've a whole house (and garden) to relax in rather than being stuck in either a hotel room or the bar with lots kf other people!

Devto21t · 05/07/2023 12:39

These dudes really put the self into self catering - they left us one dishwasher tablet! And a packet of fox’s cookies. I’m booking next year’s holiday 😂.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/07/2023 13:00

I would cancel too
Not sure if they're would be bargains abroad this late, but Dorset is gorgeous and best enjoyed in the sun
( West bay is a special place for me)

wendyjoy · 05/07/2023 16:57

Definitely cancel and go abroad.
We find going abroad for five nights much cheaper than staying in the UK.
Look at Cheap flights.. then Booking. Com for accommodation.
You will benefit from it more.

Lifeisapeach · 05/07/2023 19:30

Yes cancel it!

im in similar boat… bought a caravan and planning to not have an abroad holiday this year to enjoy the caravan (coastal but still uk). But only had it a few weeks and I do exactly what I do at home. So it’s a big cancel vote for me. Get yourself a flight booked !

Nofreshstarthere22 · 05/07/2023 19:34

God yes!!!

SoWhatEh · 05/07/2023 19:40

YES!!!! Cancel and go to Spain or Portugal.

I almost divorced DH for his insistence on 'holidays' in Wales and Devon. Damp cottages in solid rain with no dishwashers so I ended up doing more work than usual and trying to entertain DC in cramped ill-equipped cottages or fork out staggering amounts for over-priced shitty 'experiences'. We had an almighty row and from then on went abroad. Everyone happier.

FlounderingFruitcake · 05/07/2023 19:42

DO IT!!

ThisIsACoolUserName · 05/07/2023 20:21

I've just vetoed a UK trip.
I usually LOVE them, but I'm so exhausted, I want to float in a pool reading a book, with the warmth of the sun on my skin.
I don't want to do a food shop, cook and do the washing up (which DH and I would share), risk dodgy weather, pay extortionate prices for average pub meals, or look after our beloved dog.
So we're off to the Med instead ☀️

TheOrigRights · 05/07/2023 21:52

Am sending you an inflatable flamingo to allow you to do just this.

xyz111 · 05/07/2023 21:58

This is why I never book a holiday at home. Just can't guarantee the weather
