Aibu to say sainsburys was the first supermarket to introduce putting £1 in the trolley?

Home Bargains sell trolley tokens for 39p. They're usually besides the shopping bags in my local store.

OP, how would you know though? They don’t all have them/didn’t all bring them
on at the same time? So your Sainsbury’s might have got them before your Asda, but in a different area it might have happened the other way round.

A 2p coin works in the 2€ ones in Ireland.

I still have a French Intermarche trolley token in my car from about 30 years ago. I use that.

But yep, it varies hugely. My nearest Tesco doesn't have coin operated trolleys. The one in the next town has had them for many years

@Needmorelego

it’s not really about it “costing” £1 - that’s just the size of the slot.
You can use a re usable token instead of a £1 coin, round bit of some types of keys or (allegedly) two 20p pieces glued together.

It was about the cost though. That's the whole reason it was £1 which was a long time before trolley tokens. The idea is whatever goes in it makes it worth returning and also too much to justify taking it. £1 is worth much less so people are more likely to take the trolley away, be it to get their shopping home (and dump in the street as is common in some parts) or teens messing around.

I remember Sainsbury’s trolleys taking coins in the early 80's (think it was 10p at the time!)

If I wanted to pinch a trolley I would pay the pound. It’s quite cheap 😂
