How can people get away with this?

We've had a holiday booked for about 6 months, a cottage in UK with my parents. Today they cancelled and the booking agent has offered a refund or rebook somewhere else.

Where are we going to find somewhere else big enough/nice enough with only 3 weeks to go? Certainly not without paying about triple the price which we can't afford.

I'm devastated. This was our only holiday and now we have nothing.

How can people do this?

Have a look on airBNB - the UK is a big place and you're bound to find somewhere nice in your price bracket! Don't despair, get searching.

there’s an article in Which? Magazine that explains that one or two huge holiday firms have hoovered up lots of independent firms. So although you think you’ve booked through cottages.com, you’ve actually booked through Awaze. I think Sykes is another one that’s part of a huge company.

Which? Also suggests that its members had better customer service booking through genuinely independent companies.

We don't just want 'something' or 'anything', we would like a wonderful holiday. £5k sounds a lot but there's lots of us going!

You will! There are so many nice places to visit in the UK. You may need to cast your net wider.

Cottages.com are notorious for this, they’ve done it to me 3 times now. Luckily it was quite a while before I was due to go. In each case they said the owner had decided to sell their property but no idea if that was true. I wouldn’t book with them again and risk the disappointment.

I really hope you get something even better soon.

Try:

Norfolk
Suffolk
Essex coast
Kent coast
East Sussex
Wales
Lake District
Peak District
York
Somerset
Dorset
Devon
Cornwall
Warwick
Northumberland

So many beautiful places to choose from, and lots of availability still. Good luck!
