To wonder if this is the average cost of wrap around care at school?

My son is about to start school in September. We've had his parent information session where I found out that breakfast club is £3.30 per day and after school provision (until 6pm, which is what I would need) is an additional £11.20 per day. So I'd be spending £14 per day on childcare for my eldest and my second would also have to be put into nursery (he's only 6 weeks so I'm currently on may leave) so that would be another £64 per day. How does anyone account to work with £80 per day cc costs?!

AIBU that the schools wrap around car is pricey, or is this the going rate?

Breakfast club 5.50 and after school club 11 pounds here

mindutopia · 03/07/2023 12:56

I just checked our local one - it's £6.20 for breakfast club (includes actual breakfast) and £9.70 for after school club (which also includes some sort of snack). We live in the arse end of nowhere, so I would expect it to be more expensive than this most places, so I would say that sounds like a good deal.

GCSister · 03/07/2023 12:57

Sounds about average to me.
What sort of prices were you expecting?

Whokilledrogerrabit · 03/07/2023 12:58

@EmmaOvary, yes, as I'm on mat leave I don't need to worry about wrap around care for my school-aged child yet, fortunately. 😅 It officially ends next May when I'll need to really weigh up my different options.

It's been really interesting to see everyone's responses. I didn't think to include a location, but we're in the East Midlands so nowhere near London.

@Tarantella6, I'm a teacher so my actual contracted hours are 8:00-3:30 (except for Wed where it is 6pm for staff meeting/training) but I stay until 6pm to keep on top of my workload and reduce the amount I'm bringing home. Dropping hours wouldn't therefore be an option but could potentially leave work earlier, although I think the added stress of bringing home work wouldn't offset the reduction in childcare costs, if it makes sense. Plus, we'd still need some before/ after school care as DH and I both work longer than the school's hours (even if I left at my contracted hours) . They did have an option for £5-ish for care until 4:30pm so we could potentially work this around DH's job to reduce costs.

Thank you all for reminding me about tax free childcare - I used this for DS' nursery fees so will definitely need to check if it can be used for breakfast and after school clubs.

RE childminders, I'd not considered this. I could definitely look into it as a potential option. Although DS' new school is a 2 min walk from our house so it might not be much cheaper and might be more inconvenient.

£3.50 for breakfast club and £11.50 for ASC until 5.45. My daughter used both 3 times a week

My son starts school in September, will be saving us a fortune now we don't have nursery fees.

September cannot come soon enough!

thebestsellingshow · 03/07/2023 12:59

Ours is £4 for breakfast and £7 for after school then £10 morning and £10 afternoon for holiday club. They cover from 7.30-6 and I think it's good value!

evtheria · 03/07/2023 13:01

£4.50 Breakfast Club (07.30-09.00)
£10 Afterschool (15.20-18.00)
Light snacks included after school

Northwest England

Tinyplant · 03/07/2023 13:01

We don’t do breakfast club, but ours is £6 for ASC until 6pm. We aren’t in London anymore though.

There are usually free after-school clubs like dance, forest club etc even for reception which will take you to 4pm on a couple of the days. You might have to cobble something together with grandparents picking up some days, take turns with another parent etc to make it cheaper.

Could you or your OH wfh a couple of afternoons, so you could pick up your primary child at normal time/4pm and pop them in front of the tv for a bit?

£14 a day five days a week is awfully expensive. Even eliminating a couple of days would be better.

otisfet · 03/07/2023 13:02

Ours is a bit more expensive but we are in London. Don't qualify for tax free childcare. It's annoying but the nursery is the expensive bit. I didn't return to work until dc2 was 3 as the nursery fees were lower.

Mygazpachoistoocold · 03/07/2023 13:04

£7 for breakfast club £14 for after school club. The wraparound care in our area is all privately run. In addition to this you pay a £25 registration fee too. Wraparound care, as is all childcare in this area, is really hard to come by.

YouJustDoYou · 03/07/2023 13:06

Ours is £3.90 for breakfast club and £9 for afterschool care.

gogomoto · 03/07/2023 13:06

It was £14 a day (8am-6pm) for wraparound when my kids were at primary, they are adults now.

RandomMess · 03/07/2023 13:06

Ours was £15 per day after school, 13 years ago!

Very much depends on where you live

Whokilledrogerrabit · 03/07/2023 13:06

@GCSister, I don't think I had a price in mind. At the school I work in, our breakfast club is £2.20, we do school clubs until 4pm but no wrap around care beyond that. I suppose that's why I'm asking, to guage if this is average cost. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Aggielera · 03/07/2023 13:09

Pretty average. Pretty much exactly the same as ours.
£80 comes from the family pot though, not just my income.

Tdcp · 03/07/2023 13:10

Ours is £2 for breakfast club 8-8:45 or £10 from 7 - 8.45. Afterschool club is £2 until 4pm or £10 until 6pm.

Whokilledrogerrabit · 03/07/2023 13:10

@moleeye, it's funny but my son starting school will actually be more expensive for us compared to his nursery costs! 🙈 With his free hours, we spend around £80 a month for nursery Monday-Wednesday 8-6pm. When he starts school it will be double that. I think that's why I questioned the cost. I know it's fairly average now though, thanks to everyone who took the time to respond - thanks all! 😊

I May well get slated for this but were you unaware of childcare costs before you had your DCs OP? There are so many posts complaining about childcare costs … I find it mad that this wasn’t factored into thinking when deciding to have a family…

Gymmum82 · 03/07/2023 13:14

Very cheap in my experience. Ours is £7.50 for breakfast club and £15 for after school club until 6. I wish ours was as cheap as yours

hoophoophooray · 03/07/2023 13:14

Our wraparound is £6/hour and they offer 1 hour before school and 3 hours after. I have 1 child doing 4 breakfasts and 3 after school for 2 hours and it costs me around £200/month

Beautiful3 · 03/07/2023 13:14

Yes that's roughly the same as our school. I couldn't afford for both of mine to have wrap around care. In the end I had to temporarily give up work.

Whokilledrogerrabit · 03/07/2023 13:18

@Tinyplant, unfortunately we don't have the option to WFH. I'm a teacher and husband is a fibre engineer so requires him to be on location (which carries depending where the work is).

I'd not considered that there might be other parents in the same predicament- I think that's a really useful suggestion to spend childcare with other parents. I think it'll take some time for me to be comfortable with leaving my child with someone new though and if obviously have to get to know them first so I don't think that's a immediate solution.

Luckily I work part time (3 days a week) so I wouldn't be paying everyday.

£5 for breakfast club & £7 for after school club here.

We're Staffordshire.

So if the OPs first born is starting school this September he was born between 1 September 2018 and 31 august 2019.

I really, genuinely don’t mean this snarkily but can you honestly say that you’re unaware that things have changed pretty dramatically since then, financially and in every other respect?

MrsPetty · 03/07/2023 13:21

@Giltedged in answer to your question, yes I probably am pretty unaware apart from the obvious cost of living situation. My DDs are teens now but I do remember before I had my family seriously considering the financial burden and how I was going to manage it …
