This is a post that popped up on my Facebook feed. It's someone I know writing about Wimbledon.

Just why? It's not compulsory to watch. He's got a job so wouldn't have time to watch it anyway. He's got a wife and child and countless other channels on his telly. It's not on every channel.

I hate these attention seeking posts. Anyone with me?

That's not an attention seeking post? An attention seeking post is someone posting nonsense like 'can't believe I'm having to go through this shit again' or checking into a hospital, but including no context whatsoever.

It really doesn't matter if you don't watch Wimbledon - when it's on, there's really no getting away from it. The chat at work, the news, social media - it's full of it.

MrsCarson · 03/07/2023 08:38

It takes over doesn't it. I watch a little bit some years. But It becomes lead story on everything, not just news, but other shows too.

I can take it or leave it, I watch some of it sometimes. I guess it has interfered with programming when matches have run over, but I've not seen it discussed in other shows, very rarely watch the news (I get news from radio) and don't buy newspapers.

Oh but it is fucking everywhere, same as Glastonbury, football world cup, Eurovision...all boring snooze fests but there we go. I suppose the BBC have to push these things to get viewers and justify how much money they've spent and make them "national events" in our collective psyche.

Gettingbysomehow · 03/07/2023 08:41

I hate it.

ISeeMisledPeople · 03/07/2023 08:42

I would be very surprised if the news on the radio failed to mention Wimbledon tbh...

No it doesn't fail to mention it but that's all I've heard, mentions, not blanket coverage like the chap who posted seems to think.

One could say that you could just scroll past posts that don't interest you, and not make a song and dance about disagreeing with it on MN.

But I suppose you like the attention ;)

Catspyjamas17 · 03/07/2023 09:13

If he lives in Southfields he might have a point. Otherwise not so much. I wouldn't live in SW18/19 if I didn't like Wimbledon though.

One could say exactly the same about you replying! But I suppose you like the smug feelings;)

Personally I really like that there are events that receive national coverage and punctuate the year - though I enjoy some more than others. I appreciate them a lot more since 2020/21.

StrawberryWater · 03/07/2023 09:16

I love tennis so I’m happy.

Can’t stand wall to wall Glastonbury, footie and Eurovision which also get tons of coverage so with Wimbledon I feel it’s my time to shine.

Fairygoblin · 03/07/2023 09:18

I really don't understand what the problem is!

GalileoHumpkins · 03/07/2023 09:20

I remember the days when Buffy, Star Trek, Sliders etc would get taken off for Wimbledon and finding it really annoying, same with any big sporting events screw the people that don't want to watch them.

There's a difference between venting and attention seeking, his post was the former.

This. I like most sports but find Wimbledon and it’s coverage unbearable.

Nice try, but I didn't start the post asking people to join in.

The smugness is delicious, thank you.

Buffypaws · 03/07/2023 09:31

yanbu. I love living in SW19. Everything is tennis themed right now. It’s the only time/place you get suffragette colours hanging everywhere. There are no cars in my street because parking is restricted for Wimbledon fortnight. On the other hand I don’t risk leaving my house in the car while it’s on. No trips to Waitrose. But that’s fine I just plan around it. Others I know vacate.

If you don’t live here, just watch something else. There are many other channels aside from bbc 1 and 2 now. I also managed to completely avoid Glastonbury without difficulty.

mumda · 03/07/2023 10:37

I think it disrupts the Soap Operas. Perhaps they're sad they won't get their full fix of EE.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 03/07/2023 12:20

I know where you're coming from OP.

ManateeFair · 03/07/2023 12:29

I don't think it's an attention-seeking post, but I do find it really weird when people seem to think that an event shouldn't occupy a lot of airtime just because they personally aren't interested in it. I used to work with a woman who moaned endlessly about the coverage of Leicester winning the Premier League in 2016 because she didn't want to hear about it on the news, as if she somehow expected the national news should be tailored to her specific needs only.

I loathe rugby but I don't complain when the Six Nations is on because I accept that it's a significant national sporting event and I'm under no obligation to watch it.

Apart from anything, there are countless other TV channels and streaming services available for him to watch which will not be covering Wimbledon. It's not 1985.

Or perhaps the BBC makes its programming decisions based on the overall national level of interest, rather than on what you personally happen to enjoy?

WandaWonder · 03/07/2023 12:37

How is it attention seeking?

00100001 · 03/07/2023 12:37

Perhaps.

I can't work out what word you've censored?

Workonyour · 03/07/2023 14:04

I didn’t know it was on until this post. Things on tv I don’t want to watch doesn’t bother me though, I don’t want to watch 95% of it but I don’t care if it’s advertised or whatever I just read on my phone during adverts anyway, like I am now 😁
