Do the people on here lie about their size?

Anytime I am in AIBU everyone seems to be a size 12 and under. They exercise, don't drink and eat a very healthy diet. I have been looking at the Style & Beauty section. The vast majority of posters are plus size. Am I missing something?

I'm a lard arse and I'm honest about it...when relevant. I don't go out of my way to announce it though because there's a certain faction on here who are really mean to fat people. Which is why people lie I expect!

meganorks · 02/07/2023 22:35

I'm not sure why they would, but people are strange. That said, I've not noticed that people are all size 10-12 on here.
Have you considered that, on the style and beauty pages, most people are asking for help to find an outfit. And it's likely that those who struggle the most with this are bigger sizes as there is often less choice and people have more specific requirements

PeachesOnTheBeaches · 02/07/2023 22:35

Probably, yeah.

I’m a size 4 - 6, but I’m really petite. I also don’t do any exercise or eat particularly healthily. For me personally it is just luck as I eat loads of chocolate, crisps etc. and am really lazy 😅

UltraProcessedPerson · 02/07/2023 22:35

I don’t. I’m a size 10 but I don’t do any firmsl exercise. I don’t drink though, and I have a balanced diet. Sometimes it’s perfect, sometimes it’s a mess. It’s 50/50.

Lougle · 02/07/2023 22:36

I don't see the point in lying. I'm up 10kg from when I was pregnant with DD2 (15). It seems to be my new set point. I used to be far too thin at 53kg before I had DD1, then my set point reset to 57kg, now 67kg +/-. I can get it down towards 60kg if I want to, but life is too busy to spend time doing that.

However, I'm deeply unfashionable and hate clothes. I would love to be fashionable but I'm not. Also, the 10kg is largely around my waist and I am a slight frame, so I feel quite 'big' even though objectively I'm not.

Someone could be 5kg heavier than me but look slimmer because the 5kg is distributed across their body.

Jada1234 · 02/07/2023 22:36

I’m size 12 weigh 11.3 I’m 5’8
im addicted to sugar exercise regularly.

Pleasehelpme12345 · 02/07/2023 22:38

I’m a size 8 but recently fitting 6 & xxs in some stores because of how ridiculously big clothes are now. I have been bigger in the past (lost over 6 stone) but have kept the weight off for 12 years including after a pregnancy

AllOfThemWitches · 02/07/2023 22:39

I'm not 'slim' at a size 8-10 5ft 6 so I can't get my head around others of a similar height thinking they're slim at a 12-14.

wutheringkites · 02/07/2023 22:40

Don't you think we've lost sight of what a healthy weight looks like? Wink

Ilovemycatalot · 02/07/2023 22:44

Size 14 apple shape no boobs. It’s hell finding clothes that flatter my shape. Hate clothes shopping with a passion.

Appleblossompetal · 02/07/2023 22:44

I’m size 8-10, drink in moderation, exercise a lot and eat a load of sugary crap, although not huge amounts. Doubtless it will catch up with me one day. You can probably already tell by my skin.

SayHi · 02/07/2023 22:44

People definitely lie on here all of them time.

But I would say that most people are generally size 14 or smaller.
When I think about my place of work or friendship groups most are under size 12 or 14.

There’s also the case of more people being less ashamed to say they’re a size 10 vs people who are size 20 and may not be as forthcoming about it, even though it’s anonymous.

Surely you must be?

Curseofthenation · 02/07/2023 22:45

I'm 5'7 and usually approx. 10.4 stone when I'm not pregnant (currently 27 weeks with my second, so a lot more round right now!)

I think I just seem to naturally balance out at about this weight. I don't have a petite frame but as @AllOfThemWitches says, the modern sizing these days means that I am a size 8. I have an unforgiving pair of Levis jeans that never lie to me. I wear them frequently, which I guess feeds into my subconscious and keeps me balanced.

bibbityboppityboo · 02/07/2023 21:26

Oh my god - why has no one ever thought of this?! Revolutionary.

Perhaps in S&B people who are asking for opinions / help / ideas for outfits might be unable to fit into the 'straight' sizes often advertised?

True though.

it is very easy to slim down once you just stop the bread and cake.

Not everyone values being slim over enjoying food. But yes, hormones and illnesses are irrelevant and people just need to stop eating bread 🙄

I had a ham salad sandwich for lunch and just finished 2 pistachio madeleines and my size 12 jeans are hanging off me. When I was fat I ate neither cake nor bread, my fat arse was more comfortable to sit on though. Different bodies respond to different foods differently. Funny that.

Rosietheravisher · 02/07/2023 22:51

I am going to be one of those annoying people who say that i feel enormous at the moment. I am size 10/12 But I feel really big because up until recently I was a size 8. I'm trying to get used to the change because the truth is that it takes a lot of work for me to be a size 8 and I just don't want to do it any more. I want to eat more and exercise less. I also like the fact that my lovely boobs have come back. I look as though I've had a boob job. When I was size 8 they were like deflated balloons.

Rosietheravisher · 02/07/2023 22:54

Oh, and I want to eat bread and to have my cake and eat it.

TallahatchieBridge · 02/07/2023 22:57

Someone on here the other day said they are 17 stone and a size 16.

I'm trying to work out why I am 14 stone and a size 20/22.

I think body shape makes a big difference. I am 13"1 and size 16-18. But I have teeny weenie bird bones.

I think people.do lie. But I also agree with others, style and beauty is where you for advice. It's dominated therefore by people who need advice - usually those who are larger or out of proportion in some way or those who are slim but on v v tight budgets

Mirabai · 02/07/2023 23:01

I haven’t noticed AIBU being any different from the rest of the site. The MN demographic seem to accurately reflect the U.K. female population - the majority being overweight or obese.

could be nonsense, but it could be the way she wears her clothes. I’m a size 22 (5’5 and round about 16st) but my friend insists im an 18 because in a couple of shops I can squeeze into an 18… not flattering on me or my style, but she prefers all her clothes very fitted and thinks I wear clothes too big for me.

SallyWD · 02/07/2023 23:04

I'm always honest about my size, weight, BMI and lifestyle on here (all pretty average). I don't know what I could possibly gain by lying about it.

VyeBrator · 02/07/2023 23:04

Some people get angry when others say 'We've lost sight of what a healthy weight looks like'.

But It's true, particularly in a society where so many of us are overweight.

So they'll type things like 'Bingo' in the hope of closing down anyone who says it and I really don't understand why, why don't they like to hear it? Confused

My guess is that none of their clothes have zips or buttons.

And it also depends on where they shop I guess.
