Is this the mother of all calling out - Katherine Birbalsingh

DramaFatigue · 02/07/2023 08:06

Katherine Birbalsingh has done the mother of all calling out and I can't help but sit here with my jaw on the kitchen table in awe.

She has written a 4-page open letter to Sir Kerr Starmer calling out Jess Phillip's behaviour online. Whilst I don't always agree with KB's methods of the school she runs, I do think that Jess Phillips behaviour towards her is shocking and unbefitting of someone who could be running the country. JP should resign TBH.

Headteacher Katharine Birbalsingh brands Labour MP Jess Phillips' social media posts 'racist and bullying'

Katharine Birbalsingh addressed the open letter to Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. Labour has not commented on the matter and Sky News has contacted Ms Phillips for her response.

Imagine if someone said that about someone a left leaning person. That a black person is appropriating black heritage or playing at being more black for cynical means. There purl be outrage at the racist comment.

But apparently it’s ok to say things like this about black people with right leaning views.

Disgusting and vile.

And yet MN has made it clear that it's not OK. That must be messing with your mind.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/07/2023 08:43

Apart from tweeting about Aslan, is there any evidence at all for the claim that JP thinks black and Asian people owe a duty to voice opinions that match with the left wing?

Hobbi · 05/07/2023 08:48

@cakeorwine

That's the point I'm making when I said it's lazy. KB admits it would be ludicrous to call JP a racist so uses a definition of bias that is impossible to prove but will still plant the accusatory seed, rather than owning up to her errors.

It would be interesting to have a good look at the funding agreement for Michaela. They tend to have provisions requiring the school to follow the same rules for SEN, equality, admissions and exclusions as maintained schools, and it seems questionable to say the least whether Michaela do. The Department for Education should be looking into that.

The particular Academy chains that are the darlings of the neoliberals thumb a nose at equality law and SEND guidelines with alarming frequency and seeming impunity.

Not sure why it would mess with anyone’s mind. It just shows mnhq agrees it was racist and vile. As pp said.

I blame the parents

Why would you send your kid to her school? Confused

Due to the illusion of choice.

For an MP in multicultural Birmingham, accusations or insinuations of racism could devastate JP’s chances of reelection, so I hope KB is made to very publicly retract and apologise. The accusation/insinuation will remain, of course. Retraction and apology don’t make the original lie go away.

Let's hope this materialises because JP is not fit for purpose in any capacity as an MP.

CurlewKate · 05/07/2023 12:55

Yep. What with being an outspoken woman an'all....

But the poster I was responding to was going into the typical right-wing trope of assuming that right-wingers are poor persecuted innocents whilst anyone who posts a view disagreeing with them, however offensive, will get away with it because trendy woke lefties. It was quite ironic that they had already been proved wrong, as they so often are, because trendy woke lefties don't like offensive posts either.

From all I have heard, her constituents rate her quite highly because she's an effective constituency MP who demonstrates that she genuinely cares. Fortunately they have rather a strong say in whether she remains an MP.

Wow the racism on this thread against KB is really quite something. The mask really slips from the progressives when they find a target, doesn’t it. The hypocrisy is exposed yet again.

Please give an example of racism against KB. This shouldn't include criticism of unpleasant or ill-informed things she has actually done and said.

CurlewKate · 05/07/2023 14:52

@Swrigh1234 Examples of racism directed at KB, please.

MavisMcMinty · 05/07/2023 15:08

That’s it, @Swrigh1234 - try to shut us up by pretending we’re racist.

Just a suggestion, but if you have no argument to set out, don’t argue.

itsgettingweird · 05/07/2023 15:52

Iwasafool · 05/07/2023 08:17

There are hundreds of black, asian and mixed race head teachers in the UK and the vast majority get no publicity, no racism, no headlines. I wonder why?

And I posted above about ds school HTs who tried to implement a Micheala model in his school and one moved to another to try the same.

Both "moved on". They were both white.

For me it's about the attitude to pupils and their parents. Not the race of the person doing it.

Yes. I describe such people as being those who load the gun - but don't pull the trigger.

Evidence for your sweeping generalisation?

lifeissweet · 05/07/2023 16:27

There is absolutely no evidence that JP criticises KB on the basis of being a right-leaning black woman. None whatsoever

There is no Head Teacher who is as much of a self-publicist. Name another one with this sort of profile. A white male if you like... I'll wait.

cakeorwine · 05/07/2023 17:21

I can see KB has done even more different claims on Twitter today - and the response from people who understand how Twitter works seems to contradict her claims - and she's basing the claims on a misinterpration of the evidence Alex gave to her when he told her the errors in her original claim.

As someone said, never before has a letter of complaint to the Labour Party been so looked forward to as they have loads of evidence to debunk her claims.

She is not just doubling down, she is quadrupling down.

It's really bizarre that KB thinks that JP would be in any way unfamiliar with the concept of black people being right wing. After all, she sits opposite a load of right-wingers a number of whom are black every time she goes into the House of Commons.

cakeorwine · 05/07/2023 17:30

I am also surprised that KB used the "Aslan" tweet and misread it.

If JP had tweeted "You aren't no Asian" and if it was referring to Sunak, I am pretty sure that would have been in the news. Or on Twitter.

But she didn't.

I wonder if critical thinking is taught in that school.
I also wonder if either of the people involved have read "Thinking fast and slow" and thought about just engaging their brains before they tweet. Just to think about what they are saying, how it might come across and have they got their facts absolutely correct and is there any bias going on.

Something a lot of people should really do.

SunnyEgg · 05/07/2023 17:38

When KB says she has experienced unconscious bias during her life do people believe her?
