AIBU to ask random Q about Twitter

Posting for traffic. This is a random question but I can’t find the answer to it.

wheb you’re on Twitter and you start to type in the first few letters of a profile you’re searching for, do the accounts listed come up in any particular order???

im asking because I’ve noticed that they occasionally seem to change. Essentially sometimes the person I’m searching for comes up at the first or second and then sometimes they’re the 8th or 9th.

this is just from typing in the first few letters. Is there a reason why???

I believe it goes by accounts you've looked at or interacted with before and then goes through most popular. To be honest, given what's transpired in the last half dozen hours, I don't imagine it matters now. The site is in death throes and it's only a matter of time before people jump ship and we go back to a time before these microblogging sites came about.

I deleted my account tonight in protest. Mastodon and Bluesky are nowhere near replacements, so maybe we just go outside and chill.

I have no idea what’s happened on Twitter but I’m off to check now! 👀

Elon Musk enacted his genius plan to make fewer eyeballs see adverts, thus removing the monetisation route for the whole site. It's quite the bold move.

This is down ot Google Cloud Services removing Twitter from their accounts due to non-payment. But their official line is it's to stop AI scraping of tweets.

LittleBrownJug · 02/07/2023 01:19

I’ve just seen! Genius. Although in layperson’s terms (or the way I understood it ) I would say he’s put in place limits on the amount of tweets users can see … unless you’re verified (?). So that’s a shitshow. You literally can’t read new tweets after a certain allocated amount which has very disturbing implications for freedom of information. A lot of people use Twitter for more than just memes (Apparently!)

?? anyway looks like shitshow, well done Elon.

Sorry for the thread derail OP. I have no idea! But @TrustThePlan ‘s theory seems sound.

The recent rent and other cashflow problems that Elon has inherited after such braindead antics mean he needs to make profitability and soon. Unless he wishes to know what a bonesaw encounter is like with his Saudi backers.

It's been a funny evening and I already saw he backtracked by upping the limit a small amount after this broke around seven-ish tonight, by ten, he had given a new limit. And yet, all of Twitter is reporting this as being the final straw. Take that as you will.

Between this and Reddit, I'm holding out for a return to non-corporate social media taking back the web. Maybe even BBS forums coming back.

MyLostSock · 02/07/2023 01:28

Very shoot-in-the-foot move of Elon Musk's.

At one moment, he wants users to see advertisements frequently throughout tweets; the next, he doesn't want users to see tweets (and therefore, advertisements) at all.

MavisMcMinty · 02/07/2023 02:51

He didn’t understand the thing he bought for $44billion, sacked most of the staff, and broke it.

Genius. A veritable genius.

What a shame. I was banned last year and really really missed it, but could still see linked tweets and scroll through without joining up again. When something big happens (in politics, usually) there is (was) no better place to be for keeping in the loop.

I hope people do leave in droves, but Twitter is so addictive I doubt that will happen.

TrustThePlan · 02/07/2023 03:51

He's only gone and posted about upping the rate limit again.

YABU.

smooththecat · 02/07/2023 11:38

Fuck’s sake, twitter was the only decent social media platform, and the only one I use. I learnt so much by following specific people (rather than events or news) and the algorithm used to be really good at recommending relevant accounts. It’s all ruined, I’m so fucking pissed off, why does everything have to go to shit?

lljkk · 02/07/2023 18:53

my Twitter feed is very boring now, I can't grasp all the rest of points made here, but now it's just so dull. I am not sure why I bother... just the occasional cute animal thing. I wont' have trouble staying within my eyeballs-allowed limit.
