To wonder why sunbeds are fashionable again??

I remember them being popular in the early 00’s used them a few times myself as a young teen but then we all realised they were awful, most salons closed. Now people are using them again and it’s all over social media, mostly with young adults, except now they squirt tanning drops up their noses and put drop under their tongue before they go on, I don’t even know what’s in those things, darker the better seems to be the aim 😐

Tales as old as time, what was unfashionable for the previous generation is fashionable to the kids.

I've watched reams of decor vids on tiktok, and dado rails and panelling are back. I guess it's a novelty to them lol. At least that doesn't carry a health risk I suppose.

Dotandtime · 01/07/2023 17:42

Maybe it depends where you are but I don't thinknthey ever went out of fashion here. The same salons that were trading at the start of the century are still there.

SophiaElizabethGrace · 01/07/2023 17:46

Honestly, I don't think it's really gone out of fashion. I have friends who still use sunbeds and justify it by explaining that they only use them for a few minutes. They forget to say that they have multiple sessions per week! I find it extremely worrying.

Dotandtime · 01/07/2023 18:12

I've only fairly recently discovered sunbeds after a lifetime of getting burnt as soon as I go outdoors in summer, no mater how careful I am, there's always a bit where the cream has rubbed off or clothing has moved.

The last few years, I do a handful of short sessions in late spring and that seems to take the edge off enough to stop me burning all summer. Never enough to look tanned and I'm still very careful with sunscreen and covering up, but it makes a difference. It must be better for me than getting burnt...?

Vinvertebrate · 01/07/2023 18:14

They’ve never really gone away here. Awful things - and I used to indulge in the 90’s. They can improve spotty skin.

Derailing · 01/07/2023 18:20

I don’t know anyone who uses one. I wouldn’t even know where the nearest one is.

I am shocked people use them. Especially if they have a brain.

I am sure they eventually be banned and future generations will think wtf.

WitheringTights000 · 01/07/2023 18:23

Sunbed user here.

I agree with pp I don't think they ever really went out of fashion, a lot of people still use them!

I use them as it gives me a natural tan, rather than fake tan which goes patchy. I cover my f face with my T shirt! And always wear eye protection!

Unfortunately there are many people who get skin cancer who have never used a tanning bed or been burnt....it happens!

Just like non-smokers get lung cancer!

Also agree with pp that it stops you from burning on holiday! When I go on holiday I take a good all over colour straight away, because I've been on Sunbeds beforehand!

do you understand statistics and facts?
I didn’t used to wear a seatbelt when I was a child and I’m not dead, therefore no one should ever wear seatbelts.

Derailing · 01/07/2023 18:28

I know plenty of people who have very white skin. They don’t burn because they are so careful with sun protection, wear appropriate clothing and are cautious in the hottest periods of day. A few are Australians who are conditioned from birth to take care, and who live in far hotter temperatures. There is no excuse to use these cancer beds.

Toomuchleopard · 01/07/2023 18:29

The place I get my nails done has sun beds and people are in and out of them all the time. Loads of men too. It really shocked me at first as I thought people had stopped using them but evidently not.

Porridgeislife · 01/07/2023 18:33

They’re banned in Australia. They’re more dangerous than the sun really, because the UV intensity is so high and accelerates the DNA damage in your cells.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 01/07/2023 18:35

There's one that advertises on our local Facebook page, free parking, special offers and a play area where you can leave the kids while you tan.
Surprises me every time I see it. I used to use them in my late teens/early 20's it can get quite addictive.

WitheringTights000 · 01/07/2023 18:36

@GodisaBC - I understand statistics quite well yes!

My point is there are many things that cause cancer, even walking around certain Zones in certain cities due to pollution, in fact, that's one reason why cancer is on the rise in young people.

@Derailing, people must be given freedom of choice though!

@towriteyoumustlive - I'm assuming you are intimating people who use sunbeds are thick! I don't quite fit into that thank you 😊

You don't see all the skin damage until you're older. How come you're so useless applying sun cream?

Xrays · 01/07/2023 18:40

I used to be a skincare suncare consultant. I’ve seen the damage - and cancer- sun beds can cause. I can never understand why people go on them. Sure, you can get cancer from all sorts of things but why put yourself at risk for something you can avoid? If you’re in the sun and getting burnt you’re either not using the right amount of SPF or the right type or you’re out in it too long. Using a sun bed to get a base tan to avoid being burnt is like having 5 fags to get your body used to smoking a packet. It’s insane.

I remember seeing a study done in Australia where the majority of skin cancers were found on the arms and ears of people on the side of the body they would have exposed to the sun with the window down in their car.

I have lupus and we get sunscreen on prescription as our condition is triggered by sunlight. Altruist and ultra sun are the best brands you can get.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 01/07/2023 18:41

An ex colleague of mine died of stage 4 skin cancer a few years ago. Her page is still live on Facebook and I get reminders when it would be her birthday.

She used unregulated beds as a teenager and was diagnosed in her late 20's. When it was terminal she married and died not long after.

She lived in Australia and her family campaigned against unregulated sun beds and then any public tanning salons. I have done the shine night walk in her memory.

I never tan because I am almost transparent and skin cancer runs in my family. It is not worth the risk.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 01/07/2023 18:43

Ive only ever used one twice and found out I'm allergic!

I know loads of people who've used them for years though

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/07/2023 18:44

Just because you see it on TikTok and there are tanning salons around doesn't make it popular!

Tanning salons are huge in the money laundering business.

ThatFraggle · 01/07/2023 18:44

They smoke too, because their grandad had a pack a day and lived to 100.

Have you read the NHS advice and just decided they are wrong?

It's really not better than getting burnt. It's not burn that causes cancer but rather prolonged UV exposure which is what you are effectively doing.

I had my nails done with my dd the other day and I was really shocked at how many people came in for the sun beds- it was literally like a revolving door, one in one out. And this wasn’t some popular salon in the middle of London or something, this was a fairly quiet nice place in South Norfolk.
