To wonder why sunbeds are fashionable again??

I remember them being popular in the early 00’s used them a few times myself as a young teen but then we all realised they were awful, most salons closed. Now people are using them again and it’s all over social media, mostly with young adults, except now they squirt tanning drops up their noses and put drop under their tongue before they go on, I don’t even know what’s in those things, darker the better seems to be the aim 😐

OP posts:
xogossipgirlxo · 01/07/2023 21:01

I don't see many around, didn't know they're in fashion again. I thought it's just too dark fake tan for most teenagers/early 20s.

WitheringTights000 · 01/07/2023 21:00

@ThatFraggle - I do understand statistics, I've just made a decision to take the risk.

Not really sure why you are talking about dog poo though?

Do you have some kind of strange fetish?

Are you the poo troll?? 🥴🥴

Because it's something most would avoid, and death is a little bit worse.

Sparkleshine21 · 01/07/2023 21:04

I would never use them, I like being tanned but I’m very paranoid about getting wrinkles so I use a good fake tan and cover up/use factor 50 in the actual sun

MsCactus · 01/07/2023 21:09

What I don't understand about sunbed users (aside from the cancer risk) is that UV also massively ages you. So they're basically making themselves look 10 years older for a tan that'll fade in a week or so.

If it's about the look, why not use fake tan and suncream and look young forever with a tan? I genuinely don't understand why you'd want to age yourself prematurely with sunbeds if you care how you look

They only think about now.

Not future-them in pain with cancer.
Not future-them all leathery.
The only thought in their head is 'today I look cute!'

shadowchancesassy · 01/07/2023 21:20

They've always been popular where I am and never died out. I use sunbeds in the winter because because it makes me feel good. It's like a pick me up for me.

Will it be a "pick me up" when you are having large depths of skin removed? Or having to have chemo if it has spread? Or having to say goodbye to your family?

And sadly, chemo doesn’t even tend to work on melanoma.

Yes. This .

RampantIvy · 01/07/2023 22:28

They aren't "in" where I live. There is the occasional query on the local Facebook groups asking if anywhere does them and the OP gets told by loads of people that nowhere does them and why put yourself at risk of skin cancer.

I use Dove gradual tan instead, and it works a treat.

Mollymalone123 · 01/07/2023 22:57

Can’t believe people are stupid enough to still use them.I’m on the cusp of stage 4 melanoma-I’ve had endless goes at different treatment-all of which have failed so far.i may be down to my last option.I’m 57.

HausofHolbein · 01/07/2023 23:41

@Mollymalone123 I am so sorry to hear that. I can't imagine how things are for you. I hope you know you always have people here you can talk to.

You would have to be a fucking idiot to use a sunbed.

GarlicGrace · 01/07/2023 23:42

Good lord, what a lot of catastrophising.

People DO do things they know are dangerous. Railing at them (us) with certainty of our premature & ugly deaths will make no difference; all you're doing is making yourselves quite pointlessly angry.

I'm well past 40 and not dead yet, despite smoking and having had a perma-tan for a good 30 years of my life. I'm not claiming to be evidence of safety, only luck - I'm quite surprised I'm still here Grin

But the absolutely definite forecasts of doom on this thread are ridiculous: what does it matter to you how I risk my life and/or health? I've done some dangerous pastimes in my life as well, would you like to rant fulsomely about those too?

FTR, whoever posted "young forever" is not only labouring under a tragic misapprehension about the primary cause of ageing (being alive) but also worryingly obsessed with looking young. Wrinkles ain't that bad, you know!

To those who've posted harrowing stories about their loved ones - I'm very sorry you went through it.

Again. Statistics. Not every person who smokes a cigarette will drop dead.

And you don't see the people who died walking around, do you? Only the ones who did xyz and survived.

If you wanted a seat in the train, would you choose rush hour or off peak? Yes, some rush hour trains are half-empty etc. But by and large you'll get a seat on the Wednesday 11 am train, and not the 8.35 am.

And by and large, you'll get cancer from taking idiotic risks like smoking and sunbeds. Yes, if you never smoked, don't live with a smoker and get lung cancer you're unlucky. But if you do, smoke/tan and get it the only response can be 'why did you think you would magically escape statistics?'

GarlicGrace · 02/07/2023 02:17

But if you do, smoke/tan and get it the only response can be 'why did you think you would magically escape statistics?'

Sigh.

Once again, @ThatFraggle, I didn't. I still don't. What I'm asking is why does this make YOU so angry?

Ponderingwindow · 02/07/2023 02:21

I didn’t know there were businesses with sunbeds still. I thought they were all fake tanning places.

sashh · 02/07/2023 05:46

WitheringTights000 · 01/07/2023 18:36

@GodisaBC - I understand statistics quite well yes!

My point is there are many things that cause cancer, even walking around certain Zones in certain cities due to pollution, in fact, that's one reason why cancer is on the rise in young people.

@Derailing, people must be given freedom of choice though!

@towriteyoumustlive - I'm assuming you are intimating people who use sunbeds are thick! I don't quite fit into that thank you 😊

Different things cause different cancers though.

Children who lived near Chernobyl developed thyroid cancer, skin cancer is more common in lighter skinned people who have sun exposure.

As a child I have had quite bad sun and it does worry me that I'm at risk.

I got my Irish and Scottish ancestors' pale skin and I should never have been allowed out without sun screen.

Well past 40 isn't old 70 with chronic illness that is life restricting seems far away but your kids watching you go through it will be heart breaking for them not to mention life ruining.

I guess the NHS treating you at great expense when you decided to take the risk against somebody who got I'll through misfortune were heading to a time with increasing financial shortages in the NHS and decisions on who to treat need making your cancer or lung conditions would push to the front of financing someone's hip.

Presumably having a ‘perma tan’ and a lifetime of sunbeds means your appearance is very important to you and you favour a certain type of look.

So why do you not care that you will end up with a crozzled wrinkly face and smokers’ mouth? It just doesn’t make sense to me. Not just you, but everyone who uses one.

In some ways you care enough about your looks to spend time and money on a sunbed. But you have blithe disregard for how leathery you will end up looking? Taking health out of the equation, it still defies logic.

I have no issue with wrinkles and like mine. But I would have thought someone who cared so much about their looks that they risked getting cancer, would also care about ageing well.

You're not thick but you use sunbeds?!

Oxymoron!😂

Why would anyone want to subject themselves to something that is known to cause skin cancer?! Something BANNED in many countries!

WitheringTights000 · 02/07/2023 15:25

@towriteyoumustlive - but how could I have a good job if I'm thick? 🤔 I am aware of the risks, but have chosen to take that risk.

And actually perhaps do your research. Only 3 countries outright ban them, and one of the them is Iran....I don't acknowledge countries that have no respect for human life and their idiot rules so......

Lots of people with good jobs do idiotic things. That grandad who dropped a baby out of a cruise window wasn't a tramp living under a bridge.

And the lawyers who drop dead with cocaine just hope it won't be them, but it is.

In fact, to think that aptitude in a narrow set of skills bestows general wisdom is just as dumb as smoking and using sunbeds in 2023.

WitheringTights000 · 02/07/2023 15:36

@ThatFraggle - honestly the analogies people have been using on this thread are ridiculous. Someone up thread was talking about eating dog poo and now people are talking about dropping babies out of windows....WTAF.
