To wonder why sunbeds are fashionable again??

I remember them being popular in the early 00’s used them a few times myself as a young teen but then we all realised they were awful, most salons closed. Now people are using them again and it’s all over social media, mostly with young adults, except now they squirt tanning drops up their noses and put drop under their tongue before they go on, I don’t even know what’s in those things, darker the better seems to be the aim 😐

@Porridgeislife - I don't use them excessively though. I actually use them about the same as what pp's have mentioned for their psoriasis.

Never used a sun bed and never will. Awful things. I don’t tan (I.E my skin does not tan easily) and am careful in the sun, always wear t shirts and never strappy tops, or linen shift dresses or lose cotton trousers rather than shorts.

KimberleyClark · 02/07/2023 21:01

Even so, it's easy for a tiny bit to get rubbed off and the skin to then burn. Be it a sandal strap, or the neck of a t-shirt slipping sideways, or even a finger sized patch of the back of the neck getting missed.

This is why it’s best to apply sunscreen all over before getting dressed in the morning. Before going out in the sun. That way you won’t miss any bits.

I moved to a new area a couple of years ago, and saw that there was a sunbed place in the high street. It really shocked me as I thought they'd been banned. Obviously not 🙁 There's always people going in there, it seems to be open really late.

You put it on before you get dressed you reapply a few hours later even the once a day ones....moving any straps out of the way. You use high factor cream just like you do with children. It's much safer to avoid skin cancer with sun cream than to damage the skin permanently increasing your risk of skin cancer in order to reduce burning.

I'm not advocating for sunbeds but it really isn't just as simple as 'put it on before you get dressed'.

Some of us do that and can still burn. I've burned through clothes and I have burned through windows.

In Australia you can buy clothes with UPF ratings, they have started selling them here but I can't afford £40 -£50 for a T-shirt.

They’re banned in Australia. They’re more dangerous than the sun really, because the UV intensity is so high and accelerates the DNA damage in your cells.

Commercial ones, at least. I think ones for personal use may still be permitted, unfortunately.

@Derailing - what about the people with psoriasis though? Or should they just be left in agony?

Every medical treatment has a risk:benefit profile. Very few treatments are completely safe. I would expect a dermatologist to have a discussion with a patient and make a plan. Of course if someone has uncontrollable psoriasis they can make a decision to use UV treatments after speaking to a doctor. Doesn’t make it risk-free though.

I’m not sure why you need to tell me this?

Surely if you’re as smart as you claim to be, you’d understand there’s a difference between a medically prescribed treatment and being vain?

@bonfirebash Thank you.

I used a sunbed once in my early twenties because I was struggling with my skin and wanted to not have spots on my wedding day. I hated it and didn't even stay in the whole time, I got out and sat in the room like a tit waiting for the time to run out! Grin
Last year, I had a facial basal-squamous carcinoma removed from my eyebrow. I'd had it for several years, had it checked by the GP twice and told it was 'just a spot.' I ended up paying to have it removed and analysed privately because I was so fed up with the state of it on my face all the time. It was terrifying to get that result back and I'm so grateful it hadn't spread.

I'm not going to use sunbeds again, funnily enough. I never go out in the sun without SPF and I'm pale as anything. I'm quite happy being pale tbh.

Justplainsadmad · 01/07/2023 20:39

@Ghastisflabbered have you tried a sauna? I find the heat is helpful for bad joints. and a steam room for flexibility as well

Yeah I use saunas in the summer - in the winter I can’t use them as the shock from going from warm and wet to cold and dry sets my asthma off (I’m a medical disaster)

To be fair, I do only use the beds once a month or so through winter for 6-8 minutes when no amount of warm baths seems to be helping my joints.

I just wanted to offer an alternative viewpoint that sometimes people aren’t using them just cos they want a tan - I’m definitely not keeping my local shop in business though 😀

WitheringTights000 · 03/07/2023 14:49

@Porridgeislife - yes I do understand the difference between medical and vanity.

But a poster below has said it has helped there joints so I'm interested to see if it will help mine ( as I've put above, rheumatic disease diagnosis)

Not sure why you feel the need to be so judgemental of strangers and their lifestyle choices.

Willyoujustbequiet · 03/07/2023 14:57

Because people are stupid.

I know because I used them when I was young when I didn't know better.

Bit like smoking I guess. By the time you grow a brain and realise the consequences sometimes it's too late.
