Yorkshire Building Society closing accounts down on people with views that don't agree with their policy

Summer2023hasarrived · 30/06/2023 17:06

So the story goes that if you have a view on Brexit or LGBTQ?+ that isn't inline or in agreement with the people that know what view is right at The Yorkshire Building Society then they can close your account?

AIBU - stick to the day job and provide mortgages and savings

YABU - they can decide if the values of their customers don't align to shut them down

Shouldn't be an issue really. That bakery who refused to make a cake for a gay couple won their court case said it was within their rights to refuse service if it went against their beliefs.

That was protected religious belief though.

GreekDogRescue · 30/06/2023 20:03

Even burying your head in the sand with an ‘I’m alright Jack’ doesn’t mean they won’t come for you in there future if they dislike something you’ve written on social media, for example

Cakesandbabes · 30/06/2023 20:04

Also to add that was in NI and Equality laws are slightly different there afaik

Cakesandbabes · 30/06/2023 20:08

Damn it!
Also they didn't refuse to serve him, they just refused to make cake against their beliefs.
Which is fine. We wouldn't be forcing kosher or hala butchers to prepare pig for us

Lee v Ashers isn't really a comparable case. The bakers didn't break the law because they didn't refuse service on the basis of the couples sexuality. They refused to make a cake with a pro gay marriage message. They would equally have refused such a request from a heterosexual couple.

Bull v Preddy a better comparison where a Christian b&b owner refused a gay couple and thr judgement went against the b&b.

@IamAlso4eels exactly this. He's playing the victim. There'll be reasons why this has happened.

No they really can't decide not to do business with anyone for any reason anymore. That's why you don't see signs saying "No Dogs. No Blacks. No Irish." these days.

Discrimination against political views is illegal in precisely the same way as discrimination against sexuality, race, religion or disability.

This Is incorrect. Political views are not a protected characteristic under the Equalities Act 2010. Any organisation is free to discriminate on political views (with certain exceptions in Northern Ireland) - political parties are an obvious example.

Inevitably the anttrans movement is appealing to trolling conspiracy theorists and to groups that perpetuate dissent. It's no great leap that these outspoken "gender critics" are getting bank rolled by Russia. If they genuinely don't realise that I guess noone would be surprised. But I've got zero sympathy.

Where have you seen this reported about Russia funding women's rights in the west? I'd be interested to read it

Farage, Fox etc absolutely have a right to voice their views and a building society has the right to not want them as a customer.

No the building society don't have that right, if you're providing a service you don't get to screen customers beliefs on anything, you provide your service to all or none 🤷‍♀️

FedgeHund · 01/07/2023 08:06

No disabled flags up in disability awareness month, this all causes bad relations between protracted characteristics, which is against the equality act.

Take away Ferage, there is definitely an inter sectional attitude towards protected characteristic groups, this isn't in the UK equality act, the equality act does not say anywhere that certain sexual orientations or gender reassignment are more equal than others.

Vicar slams building society for closing account over trans protest

Rev Richard Fothergill, 62, claims Yorkshire Building Society shut down his account after he accused them of promoting gender ideology during Pride month.

It is DARVO, they say that there is a conspiracy theory that if middle aged woman speak biological truth they are committing genocide too. I have no time for daft people falling for this nonsense year after year.🙄

I mean like, Russia can't even fund themselves at this point. They can barely afford their own pro russian bots, the quality is slipping.

I was called an employee for a British good manufacturer the other day under a different name, I do laugh at these people and their wild claims 😄, I also noted that they tell me to see a therapist too 🤔 I just assume it's projection.

To be honest, I am as confused by the voting choice as much as I am the subject matter. AIBU and YABU?

Surely it should be YABU and YANBU? Or AIBU and AINBU. Or maybe YANBU and AIBU. But AIBU and YABU, I'm here scratching my head on that one.

Cakesandbabes · 01/07/2023 08:28

Ha!

Just asking out of curiousity. If russia can afford paying internet randoms, how would one become the paid Internet random?

I guess see an affirming therapist who will agree with you on everything incase they get arrested for genocide and eventually lose their bank account?

HeadNorth · 01/07/2023 08:33

Farage claims it was because of his political beliefs, with no evidence. So it could also be because he is receiving money from dodgy (Russian) sources. We don't know, but banks do have a fiduciary duty not to accept money from sanctioned countries.

Zebedee55 · 01/07/2023 08:45

Private firms can have who they like as customers. Coutts (Farage), and FD (Young and Fox), are not answerable to anyone.

I don't get this though - I've dealt with banks for over 50 years, and never once felt the need to discuss my politics or beliefs with them. 🙄

boobot1 · 01/07/2023 08:46

Daffodil92 · 30/06/2023 17:11

I don’t agree with it, I think business is business and politics shouldn’t come into it.
That said, I don’t think this will affect average Joe. It’ll be people in the public eye who are very outspoken who will have their accounts closed so the bank can make a point. I can’t bring myself to give a shit about Toby young or Nigel farage.

Its the principle though, I think it is shocking. I am really disgusted, the Farage thing is weird as they have also closed accounts of his family too. Its scary people are so willing to accept this. We may not agree with someones views but this should be illegal.

This is also true but farage etc are public figures and their view widely known.

What should be illegal?
You don't know why they were shut down.
I don't know why they were shut down.
He doesn't know why there were shut down

So what should be illegal and what evidence do you have that this would apply to Farage?

There are nine protected characteristic groups in the equality act, none are more equal than others and beliefs is one.

I gather random activists are not limiting themselves to getting people removed from the correct sex ward/changing/toilets at work/school and arrested if they object to flashing not the flasher or sacked because they understand biology. They are now adding getting your bank account closed calling each institution until they find your bank.

I wouldn't want a family member or myself be a biology teacher or work in the NHS, piss off the wrong activist colleague and your family will be destroyed.

It took Maya five years to go through the courts and with aggravated compensation it was about £20k pa, how can you instruct solicitors with no bank account in the family?

CanCancanbefun · 01/07/2023 08:59

If and it is a big if that Nigel Farage received any money from RT it was before recent sanctions. Many others were paid good money by RT, Scottish chap who has been an MP.
The worry about the NF case is that all the banks have colluded and together banned him even though they cannot have the detail of the accounts. That is like the 1984 story.
