Aibu to think that this company wants government money rather than helping those in fuel poverty?

They aren't asking for money form the government, so it's a bit of both. It is very likely that energy bills will remain high this winter and therefore without support, a lot of people will struggle to pay them and probably have to turn off the heating or use it less. Government support will therefore benefit to some degree as the energy company as they don't want to be supplying less energy, but I would say it is not an entirely unreasonable request..
