Council tax arrears

Not me but somebody I know has got into arrears with their council tax and their black bin was not emptied. They were wondering if this is because of the arrears? Can councils do this?

No they don't do that

MiniCooperLover · 29/06/2023 21:57

Well yes I would imagine they can .. council tax pays towards the cost of refuse collection and if it's not paid I guess it's not collected 🤷‍♀️

KEG05 · 29/06/2023 21:58

Pretty sure they can’t. They wouldn’t be able to disclose to the bin men that kind of information.

MiniCooperLover · 29/06/2023 21:58

Equally it could be a complete coincidence...

TimeToMoveIt · 29/06/2023 21:58

No, the bin men obviously just missed it. You can go on the council website and let them know and they'll come out and get it. We'll in my area anyway

CopperSeahorses · 29/06/2023 21:58

I don't think it works like that, it sounds like it is just a missed collection.

VickyEadieofThigh · 29/06/2023 21:58

No! The refuse collectors just round up all the bins put out on any given day. It'll have been an error on someone's part.

The council will eventually send bailiffs round if the debt is unpaid for a long time, however.

Dacadactyl · 29/06/2023 21:59

Won't be to do with the council tax, I'd be 99% confident of that. But they will pursue the arrears.

MidgeMainCourse · 29/06/2023 21:59

I should add - they can go to court and get an order to garner benefits or wages, or put a charge on your property if you own it.
