Amoxycillin.. when to take? Anyone knowledgeable?

Prescribed amoxycillin 3xdaily. Read leaflet to see when it should be taken, no mention.
Consulted Google and got everything from ‘before or after food’, which to me suggests immediately, to ‘on an empty stomach’’, or two hours after eating. Anyone know? Does it matter?

I don’t think it matters.

The main thing is to get that first dose in so you start feeling better!

LaBefana · 29/06/2023 14:16

I was taking it for cellulitis and the doctor said it doesn't matter if you take it with food or not, but if I took it on an empty stomach and found it upset it a bit, that would be a sign to take it after a meal. The important thing, she said, is to try to take it at roughly equal intervals.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 29/06/2023 14:17

It doesn’t matter. If it did, it would say on the dispensing label.

Pottedpalm · 29/06/2023 14:18

Thanks.
@LaBefana did she say equal over 24 hours? I never know whether it means this or evenly over the ‘day’

It said take three times a day so take it three times a day? What is difficult about the instruction?

Unless you are given an explicit instruction (IE "take with/after food" "Don't take with X other medication" etc) then you don't have to do anything except follow the instruction you have been given.

@Pottedpalm I'm a pharmacist. Try to space them over 24 hours as much as you can, e.g. 8am, 4pm, 12 midnight. Doesn't matter if you've eaten or not. Also I'm sure you know but please complete the course, even if you feel better

AmytheDancingBrick · 29/06/2023 14:22

Roughly every 8 hours - first thing in a morning, last thing at night and half-way inbetween.

It doesn't matter if it's on an empty stomach or not.

I asked, and she said something like one at 8 AM, one at 3 PM and one at 11 PM would be fine.

Mangogogogo · 29/06/2023 14:25

You would have been given special instructions printed on the label if so. It’s usually only stated on an empty stomach when there are other problems at play.
both my kids on them at the min, one fine. Other one the doctor said an hour before food and it was also printed on the label. Because he has a bowel issue

This.

And take probiotics and probiotics after you've finished the course to repopulate your gut bacteria. Don't take during as this can mess up the abs.

KirstenBlest · 29/06/2023 14:43

The important thing is to take them, and to complete the course.

Pottedpalm · 29/06/2023 14:44

Thanks all!

I think it's better to take when you are eating. That said it's always given me thrush!

Of course it matters! 2 hours is plenty.

Valeriekat · 29/06/2023 17:21

For many drugs anyway, doesn't it say anything on the packet?
Usually the pharmacist puts frequency and whether it should be taken with or without food.
